Entrepreneur Tip, Share Your Story Not Just Your Brand — Mompreneur Monday Shout Out

Floral arrangements can make or break the visual tone of an event. So, when it was time to select a florist for my Hustle Like a Mom mompreneur panel and mingle events, I knew I wanted someone who would get my vision for a warm, collaborative environment, my exact coral hue (very specific about my coral, and have been using it since my first business in 2005) and, of course, I wanted to work with a mompreneur!!

Around this time, an old friend and former collaborator – circa 2007 – found me on Instagram. Kimberly Yetka-Rosario of Icon Event Style was the floral mastermind behind the first event I hosted. She created stunning floral sculptures that I still dream about – these old photos don’t her work justice.

A decade later, four kids between us, and loads of entrepreneur tips to share, Kimberly, along with her business partner Sharon Kalb, created an ideal flower wall and other lovely floral arrangements at the Hustle Like a Mom mompreneur panel and mingle I hosted, earlier this month.

How old are your kids? Our boys are two-and-a-half-years-old, and six-years-old. But, my floral business is older than both my kids’ ages combined. I launched my business in May of 2006.

What motivates you to hustle for your business, when mom life seems to be swallowing you whole? The happiness on the client’s face when they walk in and see their flowers and event vision come to life. Their joy really fuels me to stay up late and think of creative designs.

What’s your biggest challenge right now? Finding the extra time to network and grow my business. The days I am not working on events, I try to spend at home, but those are also the days for working on the website, meeting potential new clients, and developing new product. It’s not as easy as I thought, to work from home. There’s a constant pull into one direction or another.

How do you manage your days, your time? At-home work days are based around the kids school schedules. Event prep and event days I usually leave very early for my studio and don’t return until late. My husband travels a lot for work, so my mother helps me.  Sometimes, my mom is there day after day. Without her, I wouldn’t be able to get it all done.

What or who inspires you to keep pushing your business forward? I am guided by two forces – a desired to control my own schedule, and a desire to witness a client’s joy. With my own business, even though I work crazy hours and days, I ultimately have more control over my time with my kids. Control gives me quality of life.  Also, I have been in the floral industry for 25 years. and I just really love it. So, the hustle is full of passion, and I am always inspired with each new event and client. Taking their ideas and vision and developing it and then finally creating the design is exciting every time.

What has been your biggest “aha” moment this year?  I really need to get out there and sell myself more, not just my business. Attending last month’s Hustle Like a Mom event really showed me that there are so many like-minded moms out there, and we can really help each other. Up until now, I haven’t really focused on letting anyone meet “me”, especially on social media.
What does it mean to you to Hustle Like a Mom?  Hustle Like a Mom means having a hundred things on the to do list a day, and every morning trying to prioritize and get it all done while making breakfast and packing up backpacks.
What’s one mistake you made in business that has informed how you hustle now? It’s okay to follow up and remind people about yourself, about that email you sent two weeks ago. Not following up enough with others was a big mistake I used to make. I’ve learned that everyone can get distracted, and we can all benefit from reminders.
