Jamie Hess was a public relations power player for nearly two decades, before she left her Manhattan mingles, for day-time drills at the gym, and a new mompreneur hustle.
Find out how Jamie turned sharing tips on fitness, nutrition, mindfulness, and parenting into a thriving business, thanks to proper planning, and care for the details of her craft.
How old are your kids? Mason is 4-year-sold, and Asher is 6-months-old.
When did you launch your business? I started NYCfitfam as an Instagram account about four years ago, but it became a full-fledged business and launched my TV career over the past two years. In October of 2018, I left my corporate job to pursue this path full time.
What were you doing before NYCFitFam? I was a publicist for almost 20 years. I was the SVP of a lifestyle PR & experiential agency for 6 years prior to becoming a #mompreneur.
How did this evolve from a side hustle to your main career path? Passion. I am so passionate about what I’m doing (being a wellness advocate) that I truly believe I manifested this dream without proactively going after it. Granted, I worked my tail off the whole time, but I honestly didn’t even make the choice to switch… the choice found me.
What is the process of converting a successful Instagram community into a business model? Treat it like a business. I put the same care and level of detail into my Instagram business, that I did when I ran multi-million dollar accounts, from proposals to client relations to analytics.
What motivates you to hustle for your business, when mom life seems to be swallowing you whole? I love the hustle! I chose to look at it all as a gift, because I truly love my life. When you’re grounded in gratitude, it reframes everything.
What’s your biggest business challenge right now? Learning to prioritize. I want to bring every project to life at once, and it’s a daily exercise to prioritize and be okay putting some things on the back burner, to bring others forward. Also, it’s a challenge delegating – I’m terrible at it!
What’s one mistake you made in business that has informed how you hustle now? Being too trusting. Live and learn!
How do you manage your days, your time? To-do lists are my Xanax. I love a good list, and rewrite them 100 times over every day! Other than that, I’m a huge believer in the phrase “A FAILURE TO PLAN IS A PLAN TO FAIL!!” I’m a Type-A micromanager when it comes to scheduling.
What do you like to do to unwind and self-care? Meditation, massage, matcha!
Who inspires you to keep pushing your business forward? My husband. We are each other’s biggest cheerleaders. We both love business and professional growth, and we push & support each other every day. We love to “talk shop!”
What has been your biggest “aha” moment this year? That I can’t do everything myself, and hiring people to do certain things is the best investment I could make in my business.
What does it mean to you to Hustle Like a Mom? It means being a multi-tasker extraordinaire, of course, but it also means sacrifice. Maybe you can’t make every PTA meeting, but you make sure to be there when it counts.
