Red Carpet Ready Beauty: FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

I’m coming at you with Red Carpet ready goodies in this week’s Friday Five Finds including how to get fuller lashes, glowing skin, even a sweat absorbing garment shield.

So, whether you’re going on a date with the hubby, planning a fun dress-up Oscars viewing party at home, or simply thinking ahead to wedding season, you’ll want to check out my Pam-tested picks.

Red Carpet Ready Beauty Finds by Pamela Pekerman

Red Carpet Ready Lashes

Go big or go home with Grande Cosmetics Mascara, formulated to boost lash volume. Plus, it’s waterproof. So, enjoy that Kleenex moment while Emma Stone accepts her win for Best Actress in La La Land.

PS Use this in the morning when you’re running off to daycare and have no time for any other makeup … or even a shower. It’s an instant fake-awake that will certainly distract from the fact that you might be wearing the same shirt you picked the kids up in, the previous night. #ItHasntHappenedYet #ItCouldHappen

Red Carpet Ready Dress No Mess

I’m a sweater. Wearing long sleeve dresses, has always been a problem. When I was little my mom would cut up some special fabric and sow oval shields under my armpit area, which would absorb my sweat.

These days, I use Hollywood Fashion Garment Shields, disposable apparel shields. I have no shame in my sweat-free game. #KeepingItHonest

Red Carpet Ready Skin

I’ve been testing a lot of masks, lately and I love The True Tincture Chamomile Mask from belif. Belif which stands for “believe in truth” is a cleaner-greener brand that’s becoming a staple in my beauty repertoire.
This tincture mask is loaded with real, organic chamomile flowers that will sooth and deeply hydrate your already glorious face. #EcoMama

Red Carpet Ready Glow

Never have I been so in love with a bronzer, as I am with Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals Self-Tanning Bronzing Minerals. I’m not sure about the “self-tanning” part, and the claim to long lasting glow with prolonged use.

But, I can 10000% confirm my skin has never looked better, than when I apply this miraculous bronzing dust of goodness. #GoldenGoddessAlert

Red Carpet Ready Body

I promise to stop selecting finds from This Works, when This Works stops working!

If you’re looking to cover up skin imperfections and walk your Red Carpet with head-to-toe confidence, lather on Perfect Legs Skin Miracle. It helps diminish the appearance of skin discoloration and scars. #SexyLegsContest

3 New Kids Shopping Websites and Apps You’ll Love

By now, Back-to-School is in full swing. From Manhattan to Miami and Houston (waha Texas mamas, it was great seeing ya’ll last week!!) to Hoboken, moms everywhere are breathing a little easier now that summer’s casual vibes have been replaced with fall’s structured schedule.

For me, last week was the first time that both my munchkins were in full-time day care all week long. It was also the kick-off of my first media tour (translation: lots of TV segments, in many cities, in a short period of time) since the birth of my daughter back in 2013.

During my travels, I had the pleasure of chatting with many moms, and one thing we all agreed upon is that time is not on our side.

“I just need one more day,” said one mom on my flight from Houston to Dallas.

“It’s a lot. All of it. Work. Kids. Home. I just want to catch my breath,” said another young mom at LaGuardia Airport, as we bonded over our love of Korean skin-care brands.

These amazing women reassured me that my desire to focus on time saving tips and products for busy moms, is essential!!

With both my munchkins in day care, I’m going to make a stronger push to blog more often, share more products (because I do come across so many amazing tools that have made my life easier, and can help you, as well) and also share more about my journey in the crazy land of motherhood.

Now, looping back to back to school mode, if you haven’t found the time to scoop up some new fashion and accessories for your kids, fear not! I’ve found three cool and innovative kids shopping websites and apps that will make yur Back to School shopping a breeze.

KidsShoes.com

Am I the only mom that can’t figure out what shoe size to buy for her kids? I get so excited when I find a shoe that fits, I tend to keep my daughter or son in them for as long as possible. (Which explains why we had no rain boots today! What, sandals were totally appropriate in terenchal downpour.)

So, if you’re like me, and shoe-shopping for your kids is an exercise in click, receive, print return label, and repeat, then you will love KidsShoes.com. KidsShoes.com creative director, Sarah Caplan, teamed up with footwear experts to create a patent-pending universal measuring system called KidsSizing, which allows parents to size their child’s foot online via an app, and purchase shoes that fit correctly every time.

If you’re not a mama that likes to app, there is an option to print out their simple size chart, as well.

KidsShoes.com untitled3

RocketsofAwesome.com

The name alone is killer, right? Well, RocketsofAwesome.com will rock your kid’s wardrobe world by saving you time finding on-trend and affordable fashion that your toddler or tween will want to wear.

Each season, they handpick a selection of high-quality, stylish clothing and ship it to your doorstep in a color-me-if-you-like box. That’s a fun bonus, my 3-year-old and 2-year-old really enjoyed, while I enjoyed a cup of Café Bastelo instant coffee.

Another bonus: value. All items are under $40 and can easily mix and match with each other.

Below, Ilana wears sunglasses, black leggings with hearts and a pink top that are awesome, of course.

KidBox.com

How can shopping become a tool for social good and education? Simple. KidBox.com not only has stylists curate seasonal essentials from top brands lie Reebox, Kensie, Seventh Generation and PUMA, at below retail prices, they will also donate a box of clothing to a child in need if you keep your entire box.

A whole box costs $98, and there are four per year. Each box contains 5-7 items, including a fun lifestyle goody like ABC stickers or a book, depending on your child’s age.

When we got our box, I let my daughter play with the clothing and try them on, but I also told her that we would be helping give clothing to another little girl or buy that really needs it. Even at 3, I want her to know that we always have opportunities to give of ourselves, be it via time, money or making purchases with heart.

8 Ways to Pamper Yourself at Home, on Great Day Washington

Ya, so it’s National Relaxation Day …

I should stress (pun intended)  that I’m working from home, with two sick kids and a segment taping coming up tomorrow morning! Oh, and the magical 4-day, family-and-friends weekend the hubby and I planned never happened … because someone, then two someones had near 103 fevers. Yup, that’s #momlife #circuslife.

But, today is National Relaxation Day and I am going to take a nap, just as soon as this post goes live. Praying it’s 3:30pm.

Cue zen music.

Cue silk mask over eyes.

Cue ear plugs and sound-reducing headphones.

Cue grandma coming in to save the day.

Pamper Yourself at home Pamela Pekerman

(UPDATE: this post went live at 5:45pm because my daughter refused to get out of bed with my mom. Then, my mom decided to tell me about it, at which point my daughter realized I was home … #MadatMyMom … #FeelingGuiltyAboutThatEmotion. Nap time might happen 6-7pm)

On my last trip to DC, I taped a fun pampering segment, which ran today. I hope it inspires you mamas to take some time for yourselves. I know how hard it is to put yourself on the to-do list, but it’s extremely important for your well being.

Call mom. Call the next door teenager. Take a nap. Lock the door and do a little yoga or a self mani appointment. But, first, watch my Great Day Washington segment on wUSA9. XO.

Dry Shampoo 101 – What It’s For & How to Properly Use It

Dry Shampoo – dry what?

Ya, that’s what I used to say about this beauty product.

I didn’t get the concept. I didn’t know how to use it. I didn’t bother.

Several months ago,  I was getting my hair done by  Valerie Star, Beauty Director at Caravan Stylist Studio (oh, and she used to do Amy Winehouse‘s makeup and that’s why Amy decided to sing “Valerie” – epidemically cool, right?) and she whips out some dry shampoo, and I’m all like, “Val, what’s with the dry shampoo?”

And she’s all like, “Pam, it’s totally an essential”.

And, I’m all like, “Fareelz”?

And she’s all like, “We’re totally having a 90’s moment”.

And I’m all like, “As if”!

Sidebar: The 90’s are coming back, people. Ultra-young Millennials be warned, you will not be able to fake your way through this totally awesome decade.

OK, so back to dry shampoo.

Valerie was kind enough to educate me on Dry Shampoo 101, and I’m sharing her knowledge with all of you. Now, can someone pass me the pink bubble gum?

dryshampoo_caravan1

dry_shampoo_caravan_3

dry_shampoo_caravan

Pamela Pekerman: What does dry shampoo do?
Valerie Star: Dry shampoo is used to help extend your days in between shampooing. It helps to absorb the excess oils your scalp/hair creates. It freshens up any environmental scents that may be in the hair.

Pamela: Sweet, as a busy momBOSS, showering doesn’t happen every day.
Valerie: Well, dry shampoo can also be used as a styling product when the hair might be too flat or when you’ve freshly washed your hair and it’s too fluffy or full of flyaway.

Pamela: How do you properly use it?
Valerie: Dry shampoo should be applied to the roots of the hair by separating the hair to expose the roots and spraying the product directly onto the root area, working your way around the crown of the head and anywhere you have excess oil in your hair.

dryshampoo_caravan_2

Before and After Valerie Star, Beauty Director at Caravan Stylist Studio, does her magic on me.

Pamela: Then what?
Valerie: Once the dry shampoo has been applied to the roots, you should give it at least 5 to 10 minutes to work its magic before touching/styling your hair. The dry shampoo needs time to absorb the oils in your hair.  Rub it into the roots with your fingers to evenly distribute the product throughout the hair, this helps to blend the dry shampoo all the way through the hair.

Pamela: Are there any dry shampoo don’ts?
Valerie: DON’T drench your entire hair shaft with dry shampoo. The product works best when applied primarily to the roots. A very light misting can be applied to the entire length of the hair as long as it’s applied minimally.

DON’T forget to wash it out. Dry shampoo can create a buildup in your hair. A clarifying shampoo is a great option to use once in a while to strip out any lingering product buildup.

DON’T use a flat iron. The dry shampoo can burn and clump the hair where the hot tool was just applied.

Pamela: So, how many days can I go without washing my hair? A busy mom’s gotta know her limits.
Valerie: Well, you want to avoid layering it on day after day without a proper shampoo in between. This can cause too much buildup in the hair making it heavy/weighed down and texturally unpleasant.

Beauty Tips Dry Shampoo 101

1. ACURE Organics $8.49 ; 2. Moroccan Oil $26 ;  .3 Aveeno Active Natural $18.96 ;  4. Not Your Mother’s $6.19

Pamela: Any last-minute styling tips?
Valerie: Apply dry shampoo before you go to sleep, so that while you toss and turn it will work its way throughout the hair. When you wake, you’re one step closer to being ready. This is a helpful hint in the summer months when you may find yourself getting hot in your sleep.

Insta-Ready, Insta-Shower, On The Go Shower Beauty Essentials

Overshare: I don’t always shower.

Fact: many (maybe even most) moms don’t shower every day.  Right? Please tell me I’m not the only one!!

Come on, ladies, you know you’ve been in my spot – two toddlers, too much on the plate …

If given the choice between a 10-minute shower, or a 1-minute insta-shower, 4-minute makeup application and 5-minute breakfast, I’m going for latter! I need food and I need good face. I can live without lavender shower gel for a day or two.

In my time-saving beauty hunt, I’ve found some insta-shower and insta-ready essentials that will make you look good and smell fresh even if you haven’t showered in days. (Okay, so I try not to drag on for more than two … okay three days … bit it happens. #Really #REALmoms.)

Below are some of my insta-ready, on the go shower essentials that can help you save time in the morning, as well as on-the-go.

Insta Ready InstaShower On The Go Shower Essentials PiecesofPam.com

No nasty smells, so kids won’t mind if you do this in the car – chipped nails even at daycare drop-off  is NOT an option.

Sphynx Razor ($14.99) – When you find yourself shaving in a cab – ya it happened, please don’t judge – this is the best option. Genius inversion, a 3-in-1 razor that has refillable water spray bottle, moisturizing bar, and two blades. If you’re happy and you know it … yes, you can raise your hands! You’re shaved J.

Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo ($5.99) – Clean hair without stepping into the shower? Stop it. Freshen up you coiffe with this bad boy. The dry shampoo will absorb the oil built up since your last shower (and we don’t need to get specific on how long ago that way, right?)

healthy beauty habits that save time and money

Healthy Beauty Habits that Save You Time and Money

Several weeks ago, I did a makeup dump based on:

1. Not recalling how long an item has been in the cabinet
2. Not loving what was in the product (I’m trying to get cleaner and green with my beauty/wellness routine – more on that in an upcoming post)
3. Not really loving the color/smell/finish/feel. Why did I buy this or bother taking it out from the press bag from which it came?

Below is what’s left in my two narrow (purposely narrow) beauty bins, and that’s still a lot of makeup. More importantly I, once again, can’t recall when I opened certain mascara wands or lipsticks.

Cleaning Makeup Cabinet

Do I really need that much mascara?

Turns out, 89% of women hold on to old makeup, even though 87% know that makeup has expiration dates, according to a study conducted by Stowaway Cosmetics and Poshly.

Eeek.

We need to work on this nasty habit. Here is my Three-Step Solution for Healthy Beauty Habits that are good for your skin, your wallet and your planet.

1. Mark up your Makeup
My organized and fabulous sister will be so proud. I took plain, white tables and wrote down when I first used a product, so I know when it’s time to toss it. (See below diagram for Makeup Expiration Dates)

A Guide to Makeup Expiration Dates

2. Buy Less Makeup
Ya, buy less. You don’t need four pink  glosses, especially if you always go back to the same exact shade. The average consumer owns almost 40 makeup products, but only uses and carries 5 of them daily. Come on, you know that’s you. It’s was me. Think about how much money you are wasting? Now, think about how many more pairs of shoes you can purchase with all your savvy saving?! You are welcome.

3. Buy Smaller Portions of Makeup
That’s where Stowaway Cosmetics comes in. They actually produce makeup in smaller sizes, so that you are able to finish the product before its expiration date, without feeling guilt about throwing it (and your money) away.

Stowaway’s ‘right-sized’ model gives us gals safe, eu-compliant beauty essentials, which are formulated with quality ingredients for high-performance wear, like Hyaluronic Acid, Coconut Oil, and Wild Mango Butter.

Stowaway Cosmetics Right Size Beauty

The product that I live for is their Champagne Creme Lipstick because I’ve been searching for the perfect nude share with peach undertones, forever! LOVE LOVE LOVE. Best of all, I know that in a few short months, I’ll use it up well before the 1-year expiration date approaches.

Aside from being ‘right-sized’, I appreciate that the two women behind Stowaway have really edited down the needs of women giving us a streamlined assortment of makeup essentials.

Pamela Pekerman Stowaway Cosmetics

You know I’m all about smart style and beauty tips for busy women and busy moms, and this brand gets it. Their Stowaway Kit is a no-brainer to help you Always Be Your Best You because it gives you the key items, period. No need to go from store to store or brand to brand because this kit has it all.

Check it out and let me know if you’re a fan. But, even if you are not, do consider incorporating healthy beauty habits into your routine by getting smarter with your purchases and being mindful of those pesky expiration dates. Actually, it’s worth adding to your healthy, happy self-improvement list. #SelfImproveToday.

Reversible Fashion Finds – Jeans, Tanks, Tights and More

I’m a huge fan of multi-wear fashion items. They save space in my closet. They are great for traveling light. They are ideal if your kid spills pureed vegetable soup on you, and you need a quick fashion fix – ya, it’s happened! You too? Read on.

Here are four of my favorite reversible fashion finds. Except for the tights, which are new, I wear the other items religiously! I hope they bring a smile to your face, and extra style in every step you take.

1. Bleu Lab Reversible Skinny Legging Jeans $128 – This is the item I need when I’m going to a restaurant with my little man. If he swings his arm the wrong way and some kasha falls on my jeans, I  dry up the spot in the ladies room and reverse the jeans. Boom. Instant fashion fix! (Ya, it’s a bit nasty having the jeans that were on the outside on the inside, but it’s better than having a stain for the whole world to see. Period.)

p2fashion_092415_2

2. Tees by Tina Reversible Ballet Sleeve $58 – You may already know my deep, DEEP affection for this brand. It’s my top choice in the morning because of the ease with which I can slip a dress, tank or skirt on and have it fit like a glove, and accessorized in seconds. The ballet shirt, which I own in about half-a-dozen colors, can be worn with a deep scoop to the front or back, offering you a chance to show off more of your lady friends for after-work-drinks, if you so choose. I don’t have much lady friends to show anymore, so I’m going to drink to THAT now … at 10am :).  Does someone here a violin playing???

p2fashion_092415_1

3. Hanes Reversible Tights $15 – As promised on the label, they do provide “move-with-you comfort”. I live for tights and am very picky in this category. I’m giving these an 8 because I love that I get two for the price of one, plus it was really silky on my skin. I’m not giving it a full 10 because when you flip to the reverse side, the hidden seem is no longer hidden. During the winter, if you’re wearing a thick skirt, like I did last night, you wont see it. If, however, you put on a Tees by Tina dress over the reverse side of the tights, the seem from your belly button to your hoo-hoo will show. Be advised.

p2fashion_092415_3

4. Yummie Tummie Stephanie Tank $34 – Oh, Heather, I love you. This gal is a kick-ass business woman, mama and friends. She’s not my actual friend, well, not that she’s aware of, but she’s supported many of my events and my charity – Ilya Peckerman Vasculitis Foundation. But, back to the tank – it’s awesome. You get two style options, and that yummie, seamless shaping we all know and love form this brand. This is another one of those items I have in numerous colors. Actually, I have three is hush and three in white – just in case laundry wasn’t done on time. You know how that goes! Back up essentials.

Nekz, an Innovative Non Scarf Neck Wrap Accessory

I’m always on the hunt for problem solving, time-saving fashion items. And, as I sit in my bedroom staring out the window at the rainy, cold, snowy weather, thinking about the dry cleaning pick-up I have to do this afternoon, I’m so glad I’ve found Nekz.  This innovative neck wrap is an alternative to scarves, which add too much volume to some of my coats, causing tightness around my neck and face.

Plus, it’s great to wear indoors if you want to turn a basic long-sleeve tank into a cozy turtleneck.

Here’s a style idea: treat it like a necklace and wear Nekz as a neck accessory. Below, I’m rocking a leopard Nekz on my way to host P2 Ladies Lunch, last Thursday. More on lunch in an upcoming post.

If your toddler or older kid hates wearing scarves, this is a great alternative.

Nekz are available in an array of designs, from animal prints and stylish colors, to more neutral, traditional patterns.
