BEAUTY Pam’s Picks: This Works In Transit Skin Defence SPF 45

Hey Mamas,

It’s been gray and rainy here in NYC, for several days, but today is slated to be a bright, sunny day. So, I’m thinking pool day.

Black Box Wine Rose

Whether you plan to go to the pool, hit the beach, or you are simply planning a long walk during your lunch break, don’t forget SPF.

Right now, my face is covered in the new In Transit Skin Defence spf 45 from This Works. It’s a daily moisturizer and broad spectrum UVA/UVB cream that’s a morning routine winner. BEAUTY Pams Picks: This Works In Transit Skin Defence SPF 45

I usually talk about This Work’s Deep Sleep collection, because sleep is golden and and truly the first line in beauty care. But the In Transit products also rock my world, as I roll out of bed and get on with my mamagering. In Transit is an assortment of multi-tasking beauty items that aim to protect, repair and replenish skin from environmental aggressors. Basically, they work all the time – just like you!

In addition to the new Skin Defence SPF 45, check the In Transit No Traces, a refreshing, rosewater and water mint infused pads, which are great for cleansing, brightening and refreshing skin.

Summer Skincare Solutions for the Family – FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

It’s been a while. Summer fun is happening fast, and getting to this blog has been a challenge. I apologize, since there are so many amazing mama must-haves coming across my desk and spilling onto my bedroom floor – ahhh, I can’t wait to have an real office again … coming soon #2018WeAreMoving.

Lot’s to do and share about the exciting move (renovations galore), but first here are my Friday 5 Finds, all about summer skincare solutions for the whole family.

Summer Skincare Solutions: Bugs

Fairy Tales Hair Care Bug Bandit – Between work, projects with the new home, typical mom-life choirs and the kids afterschool learning classes, we normally don’t get home until 5:30/6pm. When possible, I love to still take them swimming (my in-laws have a pool and are a block away! Major plus on so many levels). When we hit the pool for a 7pm dip, little bugs are also out for their evening flyby, so I turn to this DEET-Free bug spray. It’s non-toxic, pesticide free and doesn’t smell as bad as other bug sprays – still has a smell, but my kids would rather smell like a lemon citronella candle, than have bug bits. #BugetAboutIt

Pamela Pekerman non toxic Bug Spray

Summer Skincare Solutions: Bacteria on Towels

Laguna Blue The Smarter Towel – After the pool, it’s time to shower and towel off. And while we all wash our bath towels regularly, I recently learned that because most towels retain moisture for long periods of time, they allow icky bacteria to thrive. Laguna Blue towels have been tested and proven to decrease the spread of potentially life-threatening bacterium, MRSA, commonly found on cotton towels. The towels dry 50% faster than traditional cotton towels, hold 7 times their weight in water and are non-linting and fade-resistant. I’m not trying to give you mamas another reason to worry, but this product is super great quality so if you need a new set of towels, it’s worth-while swapping in a safer solution. #BackupBacteria

Summer Skincare Solutions: Mid-day Frizz

Nunzio Saviano Anti-Frizz Sheets – No dream spray or ion-blade hair tool will keep my hair frizz-free all day long. I go through 2-3 conveniently portable, anti-frizz sheets, per day. Bonus, they also give hair a nice, I-just-came-from-the-salon shine. #SummerSleek

Summer Skincare Solutions: Non Damaging Pony Tail

Revlon Essentials All Day Comfort –  I just learned about this new hair accessory, yesterday. (Check out more from the Revlon event, on my Instagram feed right now). I love the original coiled hair band concept, but when you pull it out you also take with you chunks of hair. Oocchhhh. My daughter always cries when we try to take her coiled band out. This version is actually covered in fabric, so it’s much softer on hair when you need to take it out, but still has that gentle hold and less-hair creasing that we like from this clever design. (The product launches August 1st at Target) #HappyHair

Rockets of Awesome Swim Rash Guards

Summer Skincare Solutions: Awesome Rash Guards

Rockets of Awesome Rash Guards – I’ve become a big fan of rash guards, even though I can’t recall my mom putting them on me. When the kids are practicing swimming for 30+ minutes, its good to know they have extra protection on their whole back and arms, since the water magnifies the rays of the sun creating a super storm bur potential – over over-scare. The kids and I LOVE the rash guards from Rockets of Awesome. Actually, we like everything that comes from this cool company. If you can’t get rash guards from them (FYI here’s another option) definitely check them out for other summer styles and back-to-school needs. #MamasShoppingSalvation

Summer Beauty Inspired by BBQ and Beach

Summer Beauty Ingredients Inspired by BBQ & Beach, on Great Day Washington, Plus How I Almost Missed My Shoot #MommyHood

What a week! How is it only Wednesday afternoon? For those of you who don’t live in DC, below is my “Summer Beauty Inspired by BBQs and the Beach” segment, featured on Great Day Washington wusa9, yesterday. Thank you to my girl Meaghan Mooney for rocking it out with me, once again.

Summer Beauty Great Day Washington Pamela Pekerman Meaghan Mooney

Before I go ahead and share all the retail credit (I hate when shows don’t actually tell you where you can buy items … That’s why I post it on this blog), allow me to vent about the past 72-hours in mommyhood.

Saturday Morning – Ilana, my 3-year-old has been on antibiotics for three days. Strep isn’t contagious anymore. It’s okay to play/interact with David, my 2-year-old. The heatwave is keeping all of us indoors. Family bonding and fun.

Ilana_July_2016

Saturday Afternoon – everyone is napping. I usually get anywhere from 2-3.5hrs to do my own thing. “my own thing” could be laundry, sleep, shower, prepping for segments, planning the kids week ahead, blogging, etc. Time is cut short when David wakes up with a deep wheezing cough. Right away, my husband and I know David has croup. Been there, heard that. Text doctor. Calm David. Open fridge doors and sit next to cold air with him.

Saturday Wraps Up – David is being nebulized with Meds to help open his airways. We now have these on hand. Doctor has approved. Does he have strep? Tomorrow it’s another office visit. Meanwhile, what about my trip to DC? Shoot!!

Sunday Morning – Ilana is with my in-laws, while hubby and I take David to Brooklyn where our Pediatrician practices on weekends. Okay, no strep, just croup. Keep nebulizing.

Sunday Afternoon – I can’t cancel on “Great Day Washington”. I did that last month when I rushed a very dehydrated, stomach-aching Ilana to the hospital. Who’s going to book me? Why bother working even a little?

David_July_2016

Sunday Evening – okay maybe mom can help. Nope not the whole time. Nanny, but not all Monday and Tuesday and plus it’s two sick kids. Nobody can handle that but mommy! But I need to go.

Monday Morning – still haven’t canceled. Gotta cancel.

Monday (late) Morning – a combo of mom, in-laws, nanny, cleaning lady (my daughter loves her!!) and hubby make my 30-hour business trip possible. This was a close one.

Monday 1 hour later – I’m heading to the airport!!

THAT’s mom life. It’s a crazy, cooky existence. But, I truly appreciate every insane moment. When you see me on TV talking about time savers, products that help me (try to) keep it together, I’m speaking from my heart. To be a (semi) decent mamager, you have to be flexible and know that the plan doesn’t always go according to plan!

Now, where’s my moisturizer, silk sleep mask and Rose?

CHARCOAL

Activate charcoal is a clear winner for adsorbing oil and debris from pores on our face and body, making it the must try beauty ingredient of the moment. I’ve already raved about this black magic wonder on PIX11 NY.

Summer Beauty Charcoal

  • HASK Charcoal with Citrus Oil Collection ($2.49-$5.99) A complete line that features a Shampoo ($5.99), Conditioner ($5.99), and Deep Conditioner ($2.49) that are formulated to give you a deep clean and bring hair back to life. Charcoal, a hero ingredient derived from coconut shells in the Philippines, acts as a magnet and attracts and removes impurities – like product build-up from all the anti-frizz us East-Coast gals are using during list latest heat wave – so you are left with hair that is full of body and shine.
  • First Aid Beauty Cleansing Body Polish with Active Charcoal ($28) This multi-tasking treatment cleanses, exfoliates and smooths to banish bumps and reduce flaky skin. The clay-based paste turns into a foaming scrub when blended with water, making it an ideal prep step for flawless self-tanner application.

SEAWEED

If you love the Vitamin C, iron and calcium boost you get from your seaweed salad, you’ll want the superior hydration as well as anti-aging and anti-inflammatory benefits it gives as a hero beauty ingredient.

Summer Beauty Seaweed

  • The Body Shop Seaweed Clarifying Toner ($15) Don’t skin on toner, like many gals do. This alcohol-free toner,  refreshes the skin, removing traces of makeup (ya you still see plenty of makeup even after a good cleanser) and bladderwack seaweed from Ireland leaves skin looking shine-free. looking skin.
  • Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner ($5.79) Due to FedEx errors, these products didn’t actually make it into my segment, which is a shame because I’m such a fan of this sulfate-free shampoo. The Seaweed Extract and naturally derived cleansers help rebalance hair’s  moisture levels, so we’re not dryied out and lack-luster.

WATER

You know drinking 6-8 glasses of water keeps your body hydrated, but did you know the ingredient is just as important in keeping your skin healthy? It’s all about 24/7 hydration perfection.

Summer Beauty Water

  • BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation ($44) The 32% water composition of this liquid foundation makes it super lightweight and easy to apply. It’s also free of parabens, sulfates and phthalates.
  • SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator ($178) Your skin will want to drink this up! The serum helps diminish appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid ( you know, that cool stuff young kind produces in abundance making it look plump!!).  Use HA5 twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Apply it after toning, and treating your skin, right before you moisturize.

ALGAE

Summer Beauty Algae

They may be the bottom of the underwater food chain, but up here, algae are sitting reaching the top of the beauty world. The living plant organisms are the latest ocean ingredients making motion on land because they have many proteins, amino acids and minerals.  Think stimulating collagen and evening out the skin tone, for starters!

  • Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Night Cream ($76) If you invest in one beauty item, it should be nighttime rejuvenation. This award-winning cream normalizes your levels with moisture-magnet lipids called ceramides that are made in abundance by young skin. Wake to skin that looks strengthened, younger-looking, smoothed, firmer, more lifted, and minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles thanks to key ingredients like algae extract.
  • Tata Harper Beautifying Face Oil ($48) You know I adore this company! This lightweight, fast-absorbing face oil hydrated skin surface, and creates a brighter and firmer appearance. The brown algae extract reduce the appearance of dullness and fatigue – ya, I’m talking to you new mom. You want this in your bathroom cabinet.

PS Shout out to my beloved David, who’s doing much better, and taking a nice nap, while mommy types away.

Sun Safety Tips on Great Day Washington w Pamela Pekerman

After an initial cancellation due to … life … aka life as a mom …

Two kids with step, one that had croup, as well. And then, the other got a nasty stomach bug from daycare that landed her in the ER for a few hours … ya, That’s Life

I finally made it to Washington, DC to share my Sun Safety tips on Great Day Washington. Check out the clips below.

Washington DC tourist

DC was amazing, and I made sure to leave myself several extra hours to enjoy the city and savor some Meaningful Me Moments. Naturally, I was covered in my go-to mineral sunscreen with SFP 50 (yes, I follow my own sun safety tips #PracticeWhatYouPreach), as I strolled along the Tidal Basin, made my way through several sculpture gardens, and capped off near the Capital.

SkinMedica TOTAL DEFENSE + REPAIR ($68)

Traditional sunscreens may no longer offer us enough protection.  Research shows infrared radiation (IRA) could be causing more damage, as the rays penetrate deeper into the skin, causing premature aging, aka winkles, loss of skin elasticity and firmness. Total Defense, is the first and only rejuvenating “superscreen” that prevents the appearance of premature aging from chronic exposure to infrared rays (IR), thanks to a proprietary SOL-IR Advanced Antioxidant Complex, which counters the negative effect of the free radicals that IRA rays produce when then penetrate your skin. The lotion also provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

CosMedix Reflect ($47)

If you have sensitive skin, mineral sunscreen is the way to go because it doesn’t absorb into the skin. Mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier on top of your skin, an when UVA and UVB rays hit the skin then bounce/reflect off.  This spray is non-irritating, chemical-free, oil-free formula. Combining micronized titanium dioxide—nature’s own sunscreen—with two skin-specific antioxidants, Reflect provides lightweight UV protection. To learn more about mineral vs chemical click here.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Stick SPF 70 ($10.99)

Neutrogena’s #mimicmommy campaign is all about setting a good example… mom applies and then kids want to use th fun stick – or what I call “the crayon stick”!   Sunscreen sticks provide a fun application that kids will want to use on their own and mom can go in and assist in spots they missed.  The unique wide-faced stick that’s water and sweat resistant is ideal for both face and body… and no messy hands required!  It’s formulated with HELIOPLEX Technology, a breadth of stabilizing sunscreen technologies that deliver superior protection from UVA/UVB protection

ALMAY Smart Shade Skintone Matching Makeup SPF 15 ($13.99 )

I’m all about double-duty beauty so skin coverage that’s also giving me SPF protection, is ideal for busy mommy morning. Almay’s smart shade makeup adjusts to the natural tones and of your skin thanks to their Almay tonemimic shade-sensing bead technology which uses the skin tone enhancing benefits of synthetic melanin pigments to blend and adjust to the essential pigments of your unique skin tone for seamless, natural-looking coverage.  This is for daily use ie walking to work, a quick lunch break, not beach-bag, swim-time worthy.

Sun_Safety_Tips_1_PiecesofPam

 iS CLINICAL Hydra-Cool Serum ($90)

Formulated to rejuvenate, hydrate and soothe the skin, this penetrating serum combines superior antioxidants with essential botanicals and bionutrients, which helps relieve the sting of sunburn.  It provides intense, penetrating hydration as it cools, calms and soothes dry, irritated or damaged skin.  It also great for replenishing dehydrated skin due to air travel.

First Aid Beauty Slow Glow Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizer ($28)

Get that J-low glow without exposing your skin to harmful rays. First Aid Beauty’s Slow Glow Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizer is a completely odorless (eek have you smelled some of those other self tanners??), lightweight formula can be used on both face and body for an even, all-over glow that gradually deepens over three to four days with continued use. Complete with nourishing vitamins, emollients and antioxidants, the formula goes on effortlessly and doubles as a rich moisturizer to hydrate and condition, leaving skin silky soft with a beautiful bronze glow.

Lands’ End Women’s Swim Tee Rash Guard ($59)

If spending a lot of time at the pool or beach- you can now sport a fashionable “Swim Tee”- a stylish tee, provides maximum coverage you can swim in, plus blocks harmful UV rays with UPF 50 protection!  Designed to wear over your swimsuit top, it’s soft as your favorite tee and incredibly lightweight – even while wearing it in the water! It’s not just for swimming though. It also works as a colorful cover-up when the air turns cooler or you’re just looking to shade your skin.Sun_Safety_Tips_2_PiecesofPam

I’ll be back on Great Day Washington with the lovely Meaghan Mooney, later with month, sharing more Sun Safety Tips for sun-fun family adventures. Check my Instagram or Facebook page for air-date updates.

5 Sun Safety Tips for Kids and Babies #Don’tFryDay

Some mom’s at our local park think I’m crazy because when my munchkins were born (in April and late June, respectively), they didn’t get much sun until after they were 6-months old. It was head-to-toe coverage, an occasional cameo in the sun before 10am or after 5pm. That’s it.

Now that Ilana is 3-years-old and David is almost 2-years-old, rest assured the SPF Police still patrols the exit door.

No park, no sun after 11:30am. We come back after 4:30pm. And, that window will change as the weeks go by, and the sunshine rays gets stronger.

When we do go outside, it’s all about sun-fun, but safety first.

SPF – check. (My preference is a mineral lotion sunscreen with an SPF of 50).
Lip SPF – check.
Loose clothing – check.
Hats – check.
OK, now we can go have fun.

Dont-Fry-Day

The above proves once again, I am my mother’s daughter. She raised my sister and me to be cautious of the sun, and the health and beauty problems it could cause us in the future. Actually, did you know that just one blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life? Thanks mom. My healthy (knock-on-wood) and youthful-looking skin in very grateful for your common-sense approach to sun-fun.

Before you head off into the sun (pun very much intended), here are 5 Sun Safety Tips for Kids and Babies. Happy Don’t Fry Day!

1. No sunscreen for babies under 6-months of age

Keep infants out of direct sunlight, as their fragile skin is thin and delicate. Once they turn 6-months-old, look for a sunscreen that is formulated specifically for their sensitive skin. Chris Birchby, Founder and CEO of COOLA, one of my favorite sunscreen brands, also suggests looking for “sunscreens that are hypoallergenic and fragrance free, and come in a form that is easy to apply on your child”

IMG_0659

Baby Pamela, all covered up, playing with Grandpa Yuri.

2. Lotion Sunscreen vs Spray Sunscreen

Lotions are ideal, especially for younger kids that are fidgety during application. You don’t want to spray into their month or eyes. Also, with a lotion you will likely have a more even distribution.

3. Grab a shot glass

Most parents don’t apply enough SPF on themselves, not to mention their children. As a visual aid, use the recommended shot-glass amount (for toddlers you can use 2/3 a shot glass). Reapply every 2-hours, or after excessive swimming, toweling and sweating. Note that water-resistant SPF’s are now labels with “40-minutes” or “80-minutes”, but if you’re kid wants to stay in the pool for 80-minutes, you need to use some common sense and pull them out once or twice for a rest and reapplication. It’s a good time to get them to sit in the shade for 10-minutes and eat a fruit.

IMG_0657

Mini Me toweling off in the Catskills.

4. Don’t let clouds fool you

Birchby recommends we, “Use sunscreen even if it is cloudy outside. Clouds don’t absorb all of the UV radiation that may harm your child. About 80% of UV rays are allowed through clouds.”

5. Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreens

a. Mineral (also called physical) sunscreens use minerals, namely Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, as their main active ingredients. These minerals form a physical barrier over the skin that reflect and scatter UVA and UVB rays. Because of this “bounce off” effect, mineral sunscreens are better for sensitive skin. Also, they are effective right after application – no wait time. However, they do slide off easier, so you will need to reapply more frequently after swimming, sweating, and toweling/
b. Chemical (also called classic) sunscreens use chemicals as their main active ingredients. These chemicals absorb and dissipate harmful UVA and UVB rays before they penetrate the skin. Chemical sunscreens need time to absorb into the skin and form a protective layer, so you must apply them 30-minutes before sun exposure. This is another reason why mom’s with antsy kids prefer mineral … can your toddlers wait 30-minutes before running to the pool on a hot summer day?

Dr. Julie E. Russak, a prestigious dermatologist in New York City (whom I have turned to for both my own and my kids skin concerns) says that, “The most important ingredient I want my patients to look for, no matter the age, is Zinc and Titanium, both physical blockers.” These are always found in mineral sunscreens, and in some chemical creams, as well. The fabulous Dr. Russak also helped to dispel a mineral sunscreen myth. “A common and dangerous misconception unprotected sun exposure is the best and only source for Vitamin D.  A much safer and effective way of getting the daily-required amount of Vitamin D, without putting yourself at risk for skin cancer is via your diet.  Foods rich in vitamin D, such as eggs, fish and some dairy products are a much better alternative.”

Best SPF for kids and babies

1. COOLA Mineral Baby Organic SPF 50 Unscented $36, 2. Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 $9, 3. Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen with Cellular Response Technology SPF 50 $10-$48, 4. Mustela SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen Stick $13

Sexy One Piece Swimwear for New Moms on the Beach

Hitting the beach less than two months after giving birth is no easy task, even for mini gals like myself. Every woman who’s given birth knows that you can’t exercise for 4-6 weeks. Moreover, if you are breastfeeding, you have an urge to eat up a storm in order to maintain your energy level and proper milk production. So, what’s a new mom to do if she wants to Never Surrender and feel sexy? Work with the body you have NOW.

New mom poolside in Aquarella Swimwear New York Monokini

My mission, two weeks ago when I went to Miami for a bachelorette party, was clear: find a glamorous one-piece that accents my newly developed lady friends (bonus!), while synching in my tummy and hiding my excess back flab. This was my mission. Yours might be entirely different. You may have a tummy for much longer, hate how your legs look, detest the bigger boobs. The point is, for every style/beauty problem there is a solution to achieving one’s most fabulous state of beauty. (Darlings, pardon the British-esque tone in my writing. I started watching Downton Abbey during breast pumping and I find it quite marvelous to speak in such a manner.)

Where was I? Oh yes, me ;). I ended up wearing a divine black number from Aquarella Swimwear because it made me feel secure, stylish and, oh yes, SEXY, in the body I’m currently rocking.

Aquarella Swimwear 2013 (L) Calypso Maillot (R) Phoebe Maillot

Here are two other Aquarella Swimwear pieces to consider, if you want more coverage. While I’ve previously hated to spend over $40 for a bathing suit (which you can confirm with my sister, Michelle) I stand by the quality of this brand and it’s ability to keep everything that needs to be hidden, hidden, and everything that needs to be lifted, lifted!
Do you have a swimwear dilemma? Let me find the perfect bathing suit that will help you Always Be Your Best You, this summer. Leave a comment below and, who knows, maybe you’ll even get to keep the pieces I find for you!
