Mom Pampering Getaway is Selfcare not Selfish, review Sanctuary Camelback Resort & Spa

Hey Mamas,

I love my at-home Mom Sunday Spa Night, but it’s also nice to plan a weekend pampering getaway.

Two weeks, I was able to scrape (yes, scrape) together child care for five days, in order to tack on a two-day pampering getaway onto an existing two-day charity gathering.

Back in October, when the Vasculitis Foundation decided to hold our board meeting in Scottsdale Arizona, I had no objections. Sun, sleep and the opportunity to spa-it-up in the dessert during winter in NYC – sign me up. (Side bar: this was when I still had some part time help I could call upon to fil-in when I needed to fly somewhere for work.)

I’ll tell you more about the Vasculitis Foundation, my amazing late father, and my passionate commitment to empowering and educating the vasculitis community, in a post later this week.

For now, let’s talk about getaways. Whether we can plan them on a whim, or need to block out dates a year in advance, a solo spa trip, or moms-only getaway is a must for my mental sanity.

I need time to wake up to myself, tend to my own wellness with no thought of anyone else, be surrounded by women that understand my daily mama hustle, and spa-it up from head to toe.

The Sanctuary Resort & Spa in Scottsdale provided me with the perfect setting for complete relaxation – minutes away from breathtaking hikes, tranquil décor with views of the Praying Monk and Camelback Mountain, and let’s not forget their Asian-inspired spa.

The irony of the trip, is that my two and half days of pampering really amounted to less than one full day (thanks to food poising) but I made it work – night time spa appointment and a morning hike before our (went with my mama BFF, my sister

) flight back to New York City.

Whether it’s a one-day getaway at a local spa (here in NYC, I’ve heard great reviews of Sojo Spa Club) or a cross-country trek to the amazing Sanctuary Resort & Spa, a trip like this is like a major battery pack for your mind, body and soul.

For many of us, it’s not easy getting way, but this is where we need to involve our families and let them know how important it is for our sanity – yes, I mean sanity – to get some away time that is ALL ABOUT YOU.

As mothers, we are often giving without asking, protecting our family without protecting ourselves, nurturing without feeding our own souls. A pampering weekend isn’t selfish, it’s self-preservation and, yes, sanity salvation!

If you agree, I’d love to hear your comments.

Also, if you have a getaway you love, drop a comment and let our mama community know which wellness retreats or spas rock your world.

Mom Sunday Spa Night: Collagen Latte, Sarah Jessica Parker & Divorce

Hey Mamas,

With the weather dipping to near 10°C, today, here in New York City, I wanted to share a cozy drink that will add extra warmth and pampering to your Mom Sunday Spa Night – a Collagen Latte.

Below is a recipe for my Coconut Collagen Latte.

Yup, it combines warm coffee with the wellness benefits of collagen.

  • improved skin tone and elasticity
  • stronger nails and hair
  • improvement in joint health
  • boost gut health

After you pop out of the shower, (and maybe also after read that last bed time story, because #momlife is mom life) prep a cup of this yummy and beauty boosting Collagen Latte, which is made with Vital Proteins’ new Collagen Creamer. FYI lactose-free mamas, you will appreciate this non-dairy and delicious creamer.

Make sure you have your cup in time for tonight’s Season 2 premier of HBO’s Divorce, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Thomas Haden Church, airing 10pm-10:30pmEST.

I had the pleasure of speaking with SJP, this week, thanks to an intimate gathering hosted by Denise Albert and Melissa Gerstein of The Moms  (total #hustlelikeamom afternoon !!) and I was so impressed, as always, with Sarah Jessica Parker’s ability to make the person she was speaking to, feel like they were the most important person in the room.

That’s what she does in person, and what she does in her role as Frances on HBO’s Divorce. She speaks to you, she makes you want to understand her story, her decision to file for divorce, her emotional journey.

I’m adding DIVORCE to my Mom Sunday Spa Night because the show is truly a reminder to love yourself, listen to your gut, fight for your joy, and never forget that it was “just us two” i.e. husband and wife, before it was mom+dad+kids.

As one of the other guests at lunch pointed out, watching DIVOCE can actually save a marriage. Hmm….

“The idea of liberation is very different than the actual experience,” Sarah Jessica explained, at our lunch. As star and executive producer of Divorce, she added that, “We fight [to show] the unpleasantness of divorce and life because it’s fun to play it” and it makes the show more real.

“The more people are candid and decent when describing experiences, the better off we will be.”

And with that morsel of goodness, my decent and delicious collagen latte recipe.

Collagen Latte Ingredients

  • 1 Scoop Vital Proteins Collagen Creamer, Coconut
  • 6 oz cup of brewed coffee (I LOVE Cafe Bustelo)
  • 3 oz plus 1 oz milk or non-dairy milk (I use Almond unsweetened)
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg, to taste

Collagen Latte Instructions

  1. Add coffee, 3 oz. of milk, coconut oil, and Collagen Creamer into a blender.
  2. Blend until creamy.
  3. Pour the remaining 1 oz. of milk into a mason jar. Screw on the lid and shake until froth. Or use a hand-held frother, if you have one at home.
  4. Microwave on high for about 30 seconds. This will harden the froth. (I don’t own a microwave so I skip this step)
  5. Spoon the froth over the latte, and sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg if using.

Mompreneur Mom Self Care Routine

Top Mompreneurs Share Mom Self Care Rituals #MeaningfulMeMoments

Hey Mamas,

While prepping for this week’s episode of Mommy Moments with Pamela, I’ve been reading Going Beyond Mom, How to Activate your Mind, Body and Business after Baby by Randi Zinn, and I’m reminded once again how essential it is for us moms (and dads!) to create Meaningful Me Moments.

  • Self-care is not selfish.
  • Going out should not equal a guilt trip.
  • Your wellness and joy are nonnegotiable.

To inspire you to carve out time for yourself, I’ve asked some pretty bad-ass moms to share how they like to refuel, energize their spirit and carve out time for much needed Meaningful Me Moments.

For me, self-care starts with carving out time with my girlfriends. There is something about the inner glow I feel after a date with my best friends; it feels like I’m cultivating ME. My husband gives me the free pass for Saturday nights. Unless we go out on a date night, I’m free to book whatever I want with my besties. Sometimes dinner, sometimes drinks, sometimes a mani/pedi, but there’s always the room to tell stories, laugh, cry, download about whatever is up. Self-care is about nurturing every part of ourselves, and as a busy mom, it’s easy to put our friendships to the side. When my friend time is part of the agenda, I feel fueled, youthful, and so incredibly supported.

I just started core power yoga, and I’m hooked. The first week I did 4 classes and made time early am, late at night and on the weekends. This doesn’t always happen. I try to make it work before I relieve my nanny, or if I go early in the morning I make shifts with my husband. Twice per week, I drop-off for my son Dylan at his nursery school by 8:45am, so if I do not have a meeting to run to, I try to take a 9-10am class. It’s always a juggle to squeeze it in, but I’m really trying to fit this into my life.

When it comes to self-care, I’m insistent on exercise. I’ll often sacrifice sleep to sneak in a run. Maybe it’s the endorphins or the sense of accomplishment post workout, but either way, exercise is a busy moms best friend. My girls are older now, so I usually workout right after school drop off at 8am, and then head into my office or meetings.

For me it’s all about meditation, because it helps me stay sane and focused. It helps with any sort of depression and anxiety, as a new mom and as a working mom. We have so much on our plate, and being able to sit for 5 to 10 minutes, is a game changer. I used to do it first thing in the morning, like 5am, but my 1-year-old twins aren’t making that possible. Now, I try and do it right after I brush my teeth, and before I go to bed at night. I use a little lavender oil, dim the lights, watch my breath, and sometimes I use a meditation that’s guided by my friend David Romanelli

At the end of the day I need to be able to moisturize. If I can’t do anything else, I just have to wash my face and use my Clinique moisturizer. I immediately fell better and pampered.
