Beauty Benefits Coconuts

Beauty Benefits of Coconuts: FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

Is anyone else crazy about coconuts? Have any of you mamas been wondering if all the beauty benefits of coconuts are just, well, nuts? And, does anyone else feel like it was a coconuts kind of week, maybe more coco-nuts than usual?

Yes, to all of the above; at least on my end.

On Monday night, my daughter, Ilana, started to look and act sick – you know that look kids get with glossy eyes, followed by an increased desire to be quiet and still. This was during the first night of Passover. We left our family’s seder early (aka 10pm) to get home and find out Ilana was running a 101.7 fever.

Naturally, Tuesday’s planned day of fun in Manhattan was canceled.

Ilana, I found out to my delight, had tonsillitis. So, while I scrambled to find someone to help with David so that he wasn’t near her, I also began to cancel the rest of my week – save for a PIX11 segment that was focusing on, ironically, “Spring Break Survival for Moms”.

So, now, I needed to survive.

Fortunately, my coconuts week only strengthened my mommy game, desire to be more present with the kids, gratitude for creating the flexibility to be all-in when needed, and reaffirmed my infinite love for all things coconuts.

HELLO!! Passover means no usual dessert need apply. And, I was home – all week – with a sick toddler. Let’s pop those coconut macaroons, mamas.

While those particularly coconuts might not be the healthiest or have any beauty benefits – okay, who am I kidding, coconut macaroons are saturated with saturated fat AND artificial flavor; there are, however, plenty of other coconut-infused products that are good for you inside and out.

Today’s Friday Five Finds focus on the beauty benefits of coconuts. From your kitchen cabinet to your beauty cabinet, you want to go coco-nuts over this amazing fruit!

Dry Shampoo 101 – What It’s For & How to Properly Use It

Dry Shampoo – dry what?

Ya, that’s what I used to say about this beauty product.

I didn’t get the concept. I didn’t know how to use it. I didn’t bother.

Several months ago,  I was getting my hair done by  Valerie Star, Beauty Director at Caravan Stylist Studio (oh, and she used to do Amy Winehouse‘s makeup and that’s why Amy decided to sing “Valerie” – epidemically cool, right?) and she whips out some dry shampoo, and I’m all like, “Val, what’s with the dry shampoo?”

And she’s all like, “Pam, it’s totally an essential”.

And, I’m all like, “Fareelz”?

And she’s all like, “We’re totally having a 90’s moment”.

And I’m all like, “As if”!

Sidebar: The 90’s are coming back, people. Ultra-young Millennials be warned, you will not be able to fake your way through this totally awesome decade.

OK, so back to dry shampoo.

Valerie was kind enough to educate me on Dry Shampoo 101, and I’m sharing her knowledge with all of you. Now, can someone pass me the pink bubble gum?

Pamela Pekerman: What does dry shampoo do?
Valerie Star: Dry shampoo is used to help extend your days in between shampooing. It helps to absorb the excess oils your scalp/hair creates. It freshens up any environmental scents that may be in the hair.

Pamela: Sweet, as a busy momBOSS, showering doesn’t happen every day.
Valerie: Well, dry shampoo can also be used as a styling product when the hair might be too flat or when you’ve freshly washed your hair and it’s too fluffy or full of flyaway.

Pamela: How do you properly use it?
Valerie: Dry shampoo should be applied to the roots of the hair by separating the hair to expose the roots and spraying the product directly onto the root area, working your way around the crown of the head and anywhere you have excess oil in your hair.

Before and After Valerie Star, Beauty Director at Caravan Stylist Studio, does her magic on me.

Pamela: Then what?
Valerie: Once the dry shampoo has been applied to the roots, you should give it at least 5 to 10 minutes to work its magic before touching/styling your hair. The dry shampoo needs time to absorb the oils in your hair.  Rub it into the roots with your fingers to evenly distribute the product throughout the hair, this helps to blend the dry shampoo all the way through the hair.

Pamela: Are there any dry shampoo don’ts?
Valerie: DON’T drench your entire hair shaft with dry shampoo. The product works best when applied primarily to the roots. A very light misting can be applied to the entire length of the hair as long as it’s applied minimally.

DON’T forget to wash it out. Dry shampoo can create a buildup in your hair. A clarifying shampoo is a great option to use once in a while to strip out any lingering product buildup.

DON’T use a flat iron. The dry shampoo can burn and clump the hair where the hot tool was just applied.

Pamela: So, how many days can I go without washing my hair? A busy mom’s gotta know her limits.
Valerie: Well, you want to avoid layering it on day after day without a proper shampoo in between. This can cause too much buildup in the hair making it heavy/weighed down and texturally unpleasant.

Beauty Tips Dry Shampoo 101

1. ACURE Organics $8.49 ; 2. Moroccan Oil $26 ;  .3 Aveeno Active Natural $18.96 ;  4. Not Your Mother’s $6.19

Pamela: Any last-minute styling tips?
Valerie: Apply dry shampoo before you go to sleep, so that while you toss and turn it will work its way throughout the hair. When you wake, you’re one step closer to being ready. This is a helpful hint in the summer months when you may find yourself getting hot in your sleep.

Insta-Ready, Insta-Shower, On The Go Shower Beauty Essentials

Overshare: I don’t always shower.

Fact: many (maybe even most) moms don’t shower every day.  Right? Please tell me I’m not the only one!!

Come on, ladies, you know you’ve been in my spot – two toddlers, too much on the plate …

If given the choice between a 10-minute shower, or a 1-minute insta-shower, 4-minute makeup application and 5-minute breakfast, I’m going for latter! I need food and I need good face. I can live without lavender shower gel for a day or two.

In my time-saving beauty hunt, I’ve found some insta-shower and insta-ready essentials that will make you look good and smell fresh even if you haven’t showered in days. (Okay, so I try not to drag on for more than two … okay three days … bit it happens. #Really #REALmoms.)

Below are some of my insta-ready, on the go shower essentials that can help you save time in the morning, as well as on-the-go.

Insta Ready InstaShower On The Go Shower Essentials PiecesofPam.com

Caption Nails Onto The Next Crème Remover ($5.95) – Super fast, soothing on cuticles and a spill-proof casing, makes this remover ideal for busy moms that need a quick fix, when a mani appointment just isn’t an option and you have some polish coming off. No nasty smells, so kids won’t mind if you do this in the car – chipped nails even at daycare drop-off  is NOT an option.

Sphynx Razor ($14.99) – When you find yourself shaving in a cab – ya it happened, please don’t judge – this is the best option. Genius inversion, a 3-in-1 razor that has refillable water spray bottle, moisturizing bar, and two blades. If you’re happy and you know it … yes, you can raise your hands! You’re shaved J.

Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo ($5.99) – Clean hair without stepping into the shower? Stop it. Freshen up you coiffe with this bad boy. The dry shampoo will absorb the oil built up since your last shower (and we don’t need to get specific on how long ago that way, right?)

And, in case you missed it, I spotlighted one of these insta-shower, insta-ready items in the recent episode of Pamela+Vanessa #momsandsandwhine. Did you catch it Monday night 9:30pm EST? Guess what, see  video below.
