Shop4Vasculitis 2017 & Why I’m a Vasculitis Awareness Advocate

Hey Mamas,

With Thanksgiving behind us and kicking off the holiday season, I can’t help but think about the one element in my life that is missing – my dad.

As some of you know, if you’ve been following me for any length of time, I lost my father, Ilya Peckerman, to a type of vasculitis disease on December 18, 2009.

Always side-by-side, with my dad Ilya Peckerman. Thank you is the shortest way to say ‘I Love You to the moon and back’. (Blooming Lotus Necklace from Shop4Vasculitis)

I’ve gone through various emotional roller-coasters dealing with life without him, dealing with his physical absence from my children’s lives, dealing with the void of such an energetic personality, dealing with why him, and dealing with the what ifs.

What if we took him to get more opinions about his strange sinus issues?
What if we took him to a vasculitis center at a major hospital?
What if he wasn’t taken off prednisone so soon?
What if  the miracle, new meds were cleared for use while he was still alive? (we were sooo close!)

I’ve turned my what ifs, why me, and emotional roller coasters into a passionate commitment to support the vasculitis community and bring awareness to this group of rare, autoimmune disease. (Click here to learn more about vasculitis diseases.)

Once again, this holiday season, I ask you to consider selecting your holiday gifts from Shop4Vasculitis, a gifts that give back campaign.

Vasculitis Awareness Month, How Helping Others Led to My Healing

Hey Mamas,

Before May winds down, I wanted to share why this month is so special for me, and where I’ve been putting a lot of my energy, over the past few weeks.

May is Vasculitis Awareness Month, a month-long campaign design to increase awareness of vasculitis, a group of rare autoimmune diseases that cause inflammation of the blood vessels. Maybe some of you might recall the sad passing of famed, Ghostbusters actor and director Harold Ramis back in 2014 due to vasculitis?

Well, what didn’t make the news, but most certainly broke my heart, was that on December 18, 2009, my father Ilya Peckerman also lost his life to complications associated with vasculitis. My father had just turned 56-years-old.

My heart broke, my mind went numb, my internal organs wanted to jump out.

But, my spirit new there was something to do.

In 2010, I created the Shop 4 Vasculitis campaign, gathering fashion and lifestyle brands to donate a percentage of sale during the holiday shopping season to the Vasculitis Foundation, specifically the Ilya Pekerman Fund.

This past October, I joined the board of directors for the Vasculitis Foundation, with a mission to get the media talking about this often-neglected autoimmune disease.

Vasculitis Awareness Month May 2017

FAST FACTS for VASCULITIS AWARENESS MONTH

  • Someone gets diagnosed with vasculitis every 5-minutes
  • Nearly 24 million American’s suffer with autoimmune diseases, according to the National Institutes of Health. In comparison, in 2013, there were 14 million Americans living with cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute.
  • Early detection is key to potentially saving lives; education community and primary care physicals is essential

We need to START TALKING more about vasculitis and all autoimmune diseases.

From the launch of our new Instagram account, to wonderful TV segment on Good Morning Washington, CW33 Dallas and EyeOpener TV, as well as the creation of the Vasculitis Foundation’s shnazzy media kit, I’m so grateful to all my media friends for helping us increase awareness about vasculitis.

There are so many things one can do after a tragic loss, but the greatest way to heal is to help.

The greatest way to HEAL is to HELP!

Losing my father was life changing. It has taken me nearly eight-years to find my new happy formula for life, and I credit my work on behalf of the Vasculitis Foundation with my ability to find new passion and purpose.

Chatting with patients, care givers, working to get their stories heard so that maybe, MAYBE one more life is saved because one more patient starts to ask the right questions and get to the right doctor and get the right treatment … that’s living with purpose. That for me is healing.

Helping really does heal. And, as mothers, it’s a wonderful learning moment to show children that it’s good to do good, it’s good to give of yourself, it’s good to move past your own grief for the greater benefit of all.

I’d love to hear how you do good. Have you turned personal struggles into greater success? How are you teaching your kids to be selfless? Share your mama wisdom below.

$1000 for Vasculitis Foundation in 1 day #GivingTuesday

On the heels of Cyber Monday (which is way better than Black Friday frenzy! because I enjoyed my fav Rose Milk Tea while scoring plaid rompers and boots for toddlers), I’m so excited today is Giving Tuesday, a day focused on giving to others, to make their lives better.

This morning, while kicking off a new Z-pack (ya, sick, again!) I decided to jump into this awesome movement and help raise money for The Vasculitis Foundation’s Research Program. (Side Bar: Thank you for the nanny who came last minute, so I can lock myself up in my bedroom to type this up, take meds and, at some-point pass out.)

So, do you want to help me raise money for a most worthy charity, where every penny goes directly to research, while also helping to raise awareness for a rare disease?

YES, I thought so.

All you need to do is share the below tweet. Yup, that’s all. You do the sharing and awareness, and I’ll do the donating on your behalf!

1. Today, December 1st on #GivingTuesday, post the below tweet to your feed:

2day  help raise $ 4  RT post &  donates $1 per tweet #GivingVF

2. Make sure you use all the hashtags #GivingTuesday #GivingVF so I can track your good giving deeds

3. My husband and I will donate $1 for every tweet from now  through 3amEST on December 2nd (because I have to give my LA peeps those extra hours to tweet away!)

Giving Tuesday Quote GandhiMy goal is to have 1,000 tweets, 1,000 moments a marvelous awareness, and donate $1,000 to the Vasculitis Foundation’s Research Program via the Ilya Peckerman Fund which is in honor of my father.

OK, I’d love to reach $10,000, but I’m going to set realistic goals. If, however, you do help us reach 10,000 tweets, we will donate $10,000.

Can we make it happen?

Let’s make charity magic. #GivingTuesday

Time to Shop for a Cause

I’m Thankful for Time, & Gifts that Give Back #Shop4Vasculitis

I’m Thankful for Time.

It’s pretty simple. I’m thankful for time.

I know the value of time. I know what matters, who matters, and where my valuable time should be spent to better me, my family and my community.

So, I’m taking some time, right now (while baby David sleeps and before the nanny comes allowing me to rush out and get props for tomorrow’s PIX11 Gifts That Give Back segment) to share with you where I’ve been allocating much of my precious time, over the past few weeks. Because, it hasn’t been here, with you, on this blog.

Aside from sick toddlers (never fun), getting sick myself (mom’s don’t get days off – bummer!), and the usual family/home needs, I’ve been knee-deep (sometimes drowning ) in planning a very important charity campaign .

The charity – The Ilya Peckerman Fund benefiting the Vasculitis Foundation’s Research Program to find the causes and cure of vasculitis diseases.

The campaign – Shop 4 Vasculitis.

What are vasculitis diseases?

Ya, I get that a lot. Vasculitis is a family of rare, autoimmune (aka the body is attacking itself) diseases that causes inflammation of the blood vessels, arteries, veins or capillaries. When such inflammation occurs, it causes changes in the walls of blood vessels, such as weakening and narrowing that can progress to the point of blood vessel blockage. Ya, it’s not fun.

Why do I care?

dad2

Well, because on December 18, 2009, my kick-ass, BBQ-ninja, fishing-fanatic, volleyball-champion, Barbie-shopping, always-recording-memories, never-complaining father passes away from Wegeners, a type of Vasculitis Disease.

Few words can explain what it means to lose a father, especially one that is so close to your spirit. We not only look alike, but share a similar child-like, whimsical approach to life. His physical departure felt like the rug was pulled from underneath me. In fact, not until my son was born and I realized that he has that same jovial spirit, did I feel grounded, once again, in the present world.

When tragedy strikes, we must morn, embrace our emotions, and figure out a way to live on. But, in moving on, we can also refocus our lives and allocate time to the people, the passion and the projects that make life worth living.
