Travel Beauty Essentials: FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

Happy Friday. Happy sunshine.

Summer unofficially kicked off, this past Monday, with Memorial Day. And, that means it’s time for weekend getaways, lots of time in your car getting to picnic spots, camping grounds, museums, and more.

And while I probably should be telling you what I like to have in the car to keep the kids engaged, clean and fed, that will be next week. I’ve prioritized sharing my in-the-car, travel beauty essentials first.

How are you going to be happy in your mom mobile if you look or feel like a hot mess? #YouAreWelcome

Travel Beauty Essentials Friday 5 Finds by Pamela Pekerman

Travel Beauty Essentials for Lips

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Lip TreatmentLove your lips as much as I do? You’ll want to keep them well conditioned for that next kiss. I always seem to get dry, especially when drinking around during the summer – hot outside, AC inside. Neutrogena nailed it with this hydrating lip treatment that splashes your pucker with hyaluronic acid. #LipLove

Travel Beauty Essentials for Health

Vital Proteins Collagen Beauty Water – Water is one of my biggest beauty essentials, but I like to kick it up a notch and pour in a packet of Vital Proteins Collagen Beauty Water powder. These compact, on-the-go packets have a mix of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and probiotics that help improve skin tone and elasticity, while also giving your water an organic, spa-like taste. Lavender lemon is my favorite, but they also have Melon Mint and Cucumber Aloe. #CollagenCraze

Travel Beauty Essentials for Hydration

d.stil Water Bottle – This isn’t just a water bottle, it’s a do good water bottle. Together with Water.org, d.stil has already helped transform lives of over 400 people by providing access to safe water and sanitation. I hydrate myself and I help others hydrate and elevate their everyday lives. What I love about this brand is they don’t just donate, d.stil has partnered with Water.org from the get-go, to make the mission long-term and more than a pr blitz. I see plenty of those! We have so much power with every purchase. I urge you to choose to do good with your wallet. #HydrationWithPurpose

Travel Beauty Essentials for Hands

Weleda Sea Buckthorn Hand Cream – Hands down, pun intended, this is my favorite hand lotion. Everyone needs a good hand lotion in their car. This natural sea buckthorn lotion moisturized like no other, and comes in a convenience 1.7oz size. #HandUpBaby

Travel Beauty Essentials for Stress

This Works Stress Check Breathe In – This roll-on is formulated with a 100% natural superblend of pure essential oils includes Eucalyptus, which helps combat physical and mental fatigue (much appreciated when I’m stuck in 2+ hours of traffic heading home from the Central Park Zoo!), frankincense which help fight infections and the always nerve-numbing lavender. I keep one in the glove compartment and one in my bag at all time! #TrafficJamFix

Red Carpet Ready Beauty: FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

I’m coming at you with Red Carpet ready goodies in this week’s Friday Five Finds including how to get fuller lashes, glowing skin, even a sweat absorbing garment shield.

So, whether you’re going on a date with the hubby, planning a fun dress-up Oscars viewing party at home, or simply thinking ahead to wedding season, you’ll want to check out my Pam-tested picks.

Red Carpet Ready Beauty Finds by Pamela Pekerman

Red Carpet Ready Lashes

Go big or go home with Grande Cosmetics Mascara, formulated to boost lash volume. Plus, it’s waterproof. So, enjoy that Kleenex moment while Emma Stone accepts her win for Best Actress in La La Land.

PS Use this in the morning when you’re running off to daycare and have no time for any other makeup … or even a shower. It’s an instant fake-awake that will certainly distract from the fact that you might be wearing the same shirt you picked the kids up in, the previous night. #ItHasntHappenedYet #ItCouldHappen

Red Carpet Ready Dress No Mess

I’m a sweater. Wearing long sleeve dresses, has always been a problem. When I was little my mom would cut up some special fabric and sow oval shields under my armpit area, which would absorb my sweat.

These days, I use Hollywood Fashion Garment Shields, disposable apparel shields. I have no shame in my sweat-free game. #KeepingItHonest

Red Carpet Ready Skin

I’ve been testing a lot of masks, lately and I love The True Tincture Chamomile Mask from belif. Belif which stands for “believe in truth” is a cleaner-greener brand that’s becoming a staple in my beauty repertoire.
This tincture mask is loaded with real, organic chamomile flowers that will sooth and deeply hydrate your already glorious face. #EcoMama

Red Carpet Ready Glow

Never have I been so in love with a bronzer, as I am with Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals Self-Tanning Bronzing Minerals. I’m not sure about the “self-tanning” part, and the claim to long lasting glow with prolonged use.

But, I can 10000% confirm my skin has never looked better, than when I apply this miraculous bronzing dust of goodness. #GoldenGoddessAlert

Red Carpet Ready Body

I promise to stop selecting finds from This Works, when This Works stops working!

If you’re looking to cover up skin imperfections and walk your Red Carpet with head-to-toe confidence, lather on Perfect Legs Skin Miracle. It helps diminish the appearance of skin discoloration and scars. #SexyLegsContest

The Gift of Sleep, a Mom Essential: Sleep Comfort Month

Hey Mamas,

I hope you had a blessed, joyful holiday weekend.

Okay, I actually hope you got lots and lots of sleep. Really! Isn’t that what we all want? Just a small spot (pillow optional) to curl up and drool for a few hours.

With the holiday hustle-and-bustle upon us, does anyone find it odd that November is National Sleep Comfort Month?

Forget about comfort, how about just lobbying for National Mom Will Sleep Anywhere Anyway Month? (PS I’m so going to try and make that official, some day.)

Day-care holiday parties, Thanksgiving decorating, charity fundraising, corporate gatherings, gift shopping, fa la la la la la la la la ….
Sleep, when?

But, seriously, quality sleep is a luxury me and most moms could not put a price tag on. And, it’s something we need to try and prioritize.
TRUTH – I’m sitting at Le Pain Quotidien on Lexington Avenue and 64th Street, at 3pm on Monday barley keeping my eyelids open, as I draft this post. This has become my permanent state.

Which is why I’m committing myself to focusing on sleep.

Oxygen. Food. Sleep.

Here are a few tips I’m trying to incarnate into my life, in order to improve my sleep routine. I hope they resonate with you, as well.

1. Learn to Say NO

There are only so many hours in the day, and 9pm-12am is not the time to work on an arts-and-crafts project for your son’s class. (Guilty – but I’m trying to change). It’s okay to say no to someone or something else, and say yes to you time, sleep time.
Don’t volunteer for every cause. If you pass out while gathering canned soup, you’ll be of no use to the charity you’re supporting, or your own family. Don’t agree to bake a cake for your kid’s holiday party – buy it! Don’t feel the need to accept every holiday invitation. Your friends will understand. And, they would much rather you focus on the dark circle under your eyes. Seriously, they told me so.

2. Learn to Let Go

Your kids will be fine if you go on vacation, mini vacation, or frequent date nights. They will live if someone else tucks them into bed. You are a kickass mom. But, if you are running low on fuel, you will burn out and be a miserable Grinch. Don’t be a Grinch.
Get yourself to a bed – even if it means you sleep at your mother-in-law’s house during the day, while a babysitter comes and watches the kids for a few hours. YES, I’ve done that. I’ve actually called a babysitter to come and watch my kids while I “go to work”. Work meant sleep … one block down … at my in-law’s house… at 2pm. #ChooseSleep

This Works Deep Sleep sleep comfort month

3. Go to Your Bedroom

Going to your bedroom doesn’t mean you have to go to sleep. But, commit to being in your sleep space by a reasonable hour. I’ve trained my kids to be in bed by 8pm. Now, I’m aiming to train myself to be in the bedroom by 10pm. This can be journal time, reading time, meditation time, bath time, whatever time. #MeaningfulMeMoments

Me Time Sleep Time Sleep Comfort Month

4. Get Soothing Sleep Supporters

From sleeping on silk, to spraying your pillow with sleep-supporting essential oils, the below are my absolute favorite sleep props. You’ll especially want to get everything – EVERYTHING – from This Works, a UK-based brand that puts sleep at the center of its beauty empire. All their products focus on your body’s natural circadian rhythm (aka your sleep/wake cycle or body clock). This Works’ Deep Sleep Superblend, is a must for any mom looking to reboot her sleeping beauty routine.

Enjoy the last few days of Sleep Comfort Month, and keep me posted on your sleep strategy and success. As always, I’ll be sharing my highs, lows, and sleep-deprived woes on Instagram, Facebook ,and Twitter. #GiftMomSleep

Fountain of Youth Fruits: Beauty Benefits of Apples, Pomegranates & Pumpkins

Hey Mamas!

I was planning to post this on Friday – actually I should have posted it the previous Friday, but sick kids, my gut issues, charity work on behalf of the Vasculitis Foundation, life …. Sorry! One of these days, I might get my whole act together.

For now, let’s talk apples.

We’ve all heard the adage: An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

But, an apple a day may also keep the plastic surgeon away.

pamela pekerman pix11 morning news

Yup, apples, as well as two of fall’s other fruit harvests – pumpkins and pomegranates – have amazing beauty benefits.

Some of you may have caught me discussing this food to face topic on PIX11 Morning News, last Tuesday, with my dear friend, and mentor, Sukanya Krishna. (Side bar: I LOVE this woman. She’s a momBOSS, girl’s girl and killer anchor).

If you didn’t get a chance to catch the segment – Fall’s Fountain of Youth Fruits – check out the clip below.

I got quite a few emails and social media pings about the items on the table, so here’s some more scoop about the skincare and beauty finds, as well.

APPLES

Benefits of Eating Apples

  • Ursolic acid, found in the peal, is linked to lower risk of obesity because it boosts calorie burn and increases muscle
  • There are 4gp of fiber per one medium size apple. Fiber will keep you fuller longer, so you’re hopefully less likely to much on unhealthy snacks.
  • Fiber also improves your digestive system and increases metabolism. If you’ve been following my gut health drama on Instastories, you know I’m all about good gut health.

Nutritious Nibble featuring Apples

  • An apple bar is a fun way to get the whole eating the fruit. Slice up (with the skin on – because apple skin has the majority of the vitamins, fiber and other benefits) and put on the table with various sides like almond butter, peanut butter, Nutella, honey.
  • At my house, we’re big on baking apples. Wash, decorate with cranberries if desired and pop into the oven at 375degrees for approximately 45minutes. Baked apples with their skin on, retain more of their nutritional value, as compared to making apple sauce.

Beauty Benefits of Apples

Juice Beauty, which has Gwyneth Paltrow as their creative director, have an amazing green apple collection that is formulated without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances (yup eco excellence). The apples are even sourced from organic farms. On PIX11 I spotlighted the Green Apple Firming Body Moisturizer $18.

  • brightening malic acid from organic green apples combined with other ingredients for lux lotion that helps with skin glow
  • essential fatty acids and apple’s Vitamin C nourish and help firm skin from head to toe
  • No parabens, petroleum, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances

PUMPKIN

Benefits of Eating Pumpkins

  • Pumpkins are loaded with Vitamin A, which helps with vision.
  • In the mood for less Wrinkles? Pumpkins are loaded with the antioxidant beta-carotene which helps fight UV damage.
  • Vitamin C found in pumpkins is a natural immune booster that may help during cold/flu season

Nutritious Nibbles featuring Pumpkins

noosa yoghurt Pumpkin Flavor 4oz. 4 pack $4.99, Available at Whole Foods.

  • perfect for snack time, grab-and-go
  • made with whole-milk and fresh pumpkin puree and infused with wildflower honey on local dairy farms in Colorado

Beauty Benefits of Pumpkins

PCA SKIN has a great pumpkin wine-based toner. Yup, you can make wine from anything. Who knew! The Nutrient Toner is $35.

  • It’s packed with enzymes, amino acids and vitamins helps minimize appearance of pores, gently exfoliate and leave skin with a healthy glow
  • pumpkin wine produced by fermenting whole pumpkin, which releases the nutritional benefits of pumpkin, including vitamin A and vitamin C
  • Best of all, this product is free of synthetic dyes and fragrances

POMEGRANATE

Benefits of Eating Pomegranates

  • Pomegranates protect against heart disease and cancer, due to antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols
  • They Contain a natural inhibitor that inhibits production of estrogen, which can reduce breast cancer risk
  • Blood pressure-reducing properties, thanks to phytochemicals in pomegranate

Nutritious Nibble featuring Pomegranates

POM Wonderful POM POMS Fresh Arils 4.3oz $3.99, Available at local grocery store

  • Time-saving package of ready-to-eat pomegranate arils
  • good source of fiber, 4 grams per half-cup serving. With polyphenols and free-radical fighting antioxidants, only 100-calories for 4.3oz
  • For easy entertaining, the 8oz size is great for the home chef that wants to jazz a dish in seconds, giving it a punch of color, sweet taste and a healthy bonus.

Beauty Benefits of Pomegranates

WELEDA is another one of those brands I trust for their cleaner, greener approach to formulation. IF you’re looking for a new night moisturizer, try their Pomegranate Firming Night Cream $37, available at Whole Foods.

  • organic pomegranate seed oil contains high-level of antioxidants and essential fatty acids that protect skin from damaging free radicals (sun other environmental damage)
  • results in the reduction of wrinkles, for firm refreshed skin
  • 100% certified natural by NaTrue

I’m so passionate about finding cleaner, green beauty and lifestyle products. So, if you have a brand or product you love – skincare, cosmetics, cleaning agents, baby/kid items, whatever – leave a comment below. Let’s detoxify together. #CleanerGeenerLife

NOTE above medical/health claims: I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on f TV. All benefits are those I’ve heard from medical experts, research online and via interviews, and/or found in recent studies. If you have concerns about eating something or the effects of a certain product/ingredient on your skin, please call your REAL doctor.

Also, the food brands listed above and featured in my segment are not endorsing any of the benefits claims I’m mentioning, unless stated otherwise. Because, like me, they are not fans of law suits.

Okay, that’s all. Just gotta get that out. Like I said, I’m not a fan of law suits. Stress is just toxic for your skin.

Until next time, here’s hoping you #AlwaysBeYourBestYou.

Youthful Eyes in Minutes, Even If You’re a Sleepless Mom, Pamela Pekerman on PIX11 Morning News

I’ve always looked younger than my age. A huge chunk of that is do to amazing genetics – thanks mom. Another part is to good skincare habits – thanks mom. And, a final bit is due to minimal drinking – thanks mom. Wow, mom is awesome.

And, then, I become the mom! SHIT!

Erratic sleeping, constant worrying, breast feeding/pumping. It was starting to take a tole on my face, namely the area around my eyes.

But after 30-years of fabulousness, I wasn’t going to let a gorgeous 6lb baby be the cause of my skincare downfall.

I went into action, hunting down the best ways to not only take care of the delicate skin around my eyes, but also find ways to fake the “bright eyes, bushy tail” look that one has when sleep is so easy to come by.

This morning, I was happy to share some of my favorite finds for Youthful Eyes in Minutes on PIX11 Morning News. Below is a recap, in case you missed it.

If you have a favorite product that help busy moms Always Be Your Best You, leave a comment below or find me on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Maybe, if I get my tech act together, you’ll soon find me on Periscope or at the very least updating my Pintrest page more regularly. That latter hasn’t been touched since Ilana was born in 2013.

Oh, in case you missed my last segment on Charcoal Beauty Finds click here.

And, tune in February 22nd to PIX11, when I share my five fashion must haves for an easier morning fashion routine. These are the pieces I turn to over, and over, and over again. They have saved me many mornings when my children aren’t as angelic as I like them to be, and I’m running low on time. Remember, always have plan a, plan b and plan S*!t so you can Always Be Your Best You whether you have 5-minutes or 50-minutes. Umm, if you have 50 minutes in the morning you might be reading the wrong blog!

Day in The Life of Motherhood

Motherhood A Day in the Life aka Why Bother Making Plans

Motherhood A Day in the Life … So, where should I begin … oh, yes, 1am!

1amMs. Ilana Rose (now 2.5-years-old) is whining/sobbing. “Mama, ahah pee pee”. Wait, what? We sleep through the night. But, Okay,  you’re having bowel issues.

5am– Ms. Ilana Rose (who started daycare last week) is whining/sobbing. “Mama, ahah pee pee”. Wait, what? We sleep through the night. But, Okay, you’re a bit off since starting daycare.

5:10am – I’m not moving and not sleeping. Icing up the lower back/coxic bone area with Dr. Teal’s Muscle Relief Cream. Two toddles is no joke.

p2family_091715_9

5:15am – 5:45am Ms. Ilana Rose doesn’t want to sleep and I’m not in good form. Normally, I’m all for cry and leave me alone, but daycare has her in a tizzy. Striking a balance of comfort without coddle, I wake the hubby (HOW DOES HE SLEEP THROUGH ALL THE NOISE ANYWAY?!!) to go into her room and quietly put her on the potty, then let her know it’s still dark and time to sleep. This doesn’t work – twice!

6:10am – The morning rush has come. Time for my quick bathroom run and edited morning beauty routine, using 3-out-of-6 products. With toddlers you need plan A, plan B and plan S*#T if you want to #AlwaysBeYourBestYou

p2family_091715_10

6:15am – Ms Ilana Rose has her beauty routine- brushing teeth. Wait, what’s that on your tongue? ____ insert preferred profanity

6:20am – Wake up daddy to show our booboo and enjoy a three-way-cuddle. Ilana is sad about her spot.

6:35am – Ms. Ilana Rose is ready for wardrobe and hair. PS Styling a toddler with curly hair requires patience and good tools. Thanks Wet Brush Mini.

6:55am – Baby Buddha, aka David (now 15-months-old) wakes up and assumes lotus position. He’s mumbling and then he spots us approaching, through the glass French doors of his room. Ilana plays while David does what he does best, laugh, while he’s being changed.

7:15am – EVERYONE is hungry. We head downstairs. Cue the back pain of holding one that is walking and one that you can’t yet trust to walk while the other is walking. Does that make sense? You know what I mean. If not, pardon my writing. It’s not even 8am and I’m exhausted!!!

7:25am-8am – Feeding David cream-of-buckwheat kasha, while Ilana drinks her milk and feeds herself mashed prunes. Then David chills in his chair with a car book, while I assist Ilana with her kasha.

8am – I scarf down leftover kasha and fruits. This is not an #AlwaysBeYourBestYou, healthy breakfast. I eat less than the kids. It’s one-of-those-mornings.

8:20am – Grandpa is going to work late and lives down the block. Sweet. Watch David, while I take Ilana to daycare!!

9am – Back home and ask grandpa for 5-more-minutes. Grab a LUNA bar (still HUNGRY), green tea with a spoon of matcha powder and my adorable Old Navy walking-the-kids-in-the-park bag. Oh, gotta check emails for a hot minute.

9:15am – I have the best Father-in-Law! David is outside in the stroller waiting for mommy. Off to the park. Secure doctor appointment for Ilana 11:30am, today. Hmm. Rggg. I don’t want to drag David. What if he gets sick. Babysitter comes through, last minute.

9:30am-11am – Swinging, playing, laughing, pushing his bubble machine and making me laugh my tooshy off. I’m so lucky to be David’s mom.

p2family_091715_1

p2family_091715_2

p2family_091715_3

p2family_091715_4

11am – Babysitter takes David. I take to the wheel. Mad dash to get Ilana and pray to make it back to daycare by 12:15pm or she’ll miss lunch.

12pm – Wait, didn’t we have an 11:30am appointment. Ilana is so exhausted, she rests at the office. Good news: it’s just a canker sour. Put honey or rose preserve on the spot and we’ll be good.

p2family_091715_6

p2family_091715_8

12:20am – Ilana falls asleep on the way home. Poor thing.

12:30pm – Hungry hippo, aka Ilana, eats mama’s meatballs, pasta and loads of steamed veggies. I’m SO HAPPY she’s eating more.

1:30pm – Ilana is in bed. The babysitter has left. David is in bed.

1:40am – Wait, I’m hungry too!!

2pm – 2:45pm Call hubby to tell him all is well in motherhood land. Field calls from grandparents and great-grandma. Ya, we’re THAT kind of family. #Blessed

2:45pm – 3:30pm Power nap with two phone call interruptions, but i’ll take it.

3:30pm – 4:30pm – Wow, loving the energy rush. Why not change bedding, unpack hubby’s luggage from business trip, and start this post?

4pm – Baby Buddha is awake and talking to himself. 25-minutes later he starts to talk to me “Mama, bee beep” He loves cars. “Mama, amm amm” He loves to eat.

4:30pm – “Mama ah ah pee pee.” A potty trained baby is good, except that they no longer chill in bed. They have needs! I’m coming my darling.

4:45pm – Ilana is dressed and we head to David. My mom pops in after work. Yes! I love help and good company of adults.

5:30pm – Everyone eats – even me.

6pm – Following some in-door play and counting games, it’s off to the park.

6:45pm – Walking back home, Ilana wants to push her brother’s stroller. I lower the handles and watch, realizing this was long, but blessed day. Don’t blink. It will pass. #MakingAMentalPicture AND taking a real one, for daddy.

p2family_091715_5

7pm – Last meal of the day, then it’s off to bed for David.

8:30pm Ilana is in bed, later than usual, but she got to see grandparents come over.

8:35pm – Too exhausted to eat anything dinner worthy. Tea and grilled cheese sandwich with sliced tomatoes always does the trick.

9pm – Physical Therapist arrives. Like I said, two toddlers is NO JOKE.

10:15pm – Delusional Me meets Reality Me. RM: “Hi, you’re not blogging tonight. You can’t even spell your own name.” DM: “Bi&ch.” But, she’s right. Off to bed, but first: check weather, plan tomorrow’s outfit and prep breakfast. Attempt a few pages of The Paris Wife.

If this sounds like a day in your life, grab a glass of Rosé, and park it here when the kids are napping, or when you just need a minute to yourself. I’m going to be making a better effort to post, now that one of the kiddos is in day care. But, you know, things rarely go according to plan in The Land of Motherhood!

As always ,wishing you a blessed day full of style and smiles. Oh, and don’t forget to #AlwaysBeYourBestYou !

At Your Doorstep Salon with Glamsquad App

As a busy mom, it’s not easy to squeeze in a hair appointment – even when you work mostly from home. I’ve had to SOS, beg stylists to come to my house at odd hours of the day! Now, my graveling days are over thanks to Glamsquad, a new app that will do for the beauty industry what Seamless Web has done for ordering takeout – make life convenient.

First, decide on a hair style from their curated menu, created by Glamsquad Creative Director and former Senior Stylist at Frederic Fekkai Giovanni Vaccaro, Then, plug in your location (currently only offered in NYC and parts of Brooklyn), desired time of appointment and credit card information. A 20% gratuity will automatically be added, so there is no need for cash. You can set up an appointment ten days in advance, or as short notice as one hour. Considering the at-your-door, VIP service, pricing is very reasonable by New York standards – blowouts $50, braids $75, up-dos $85-$125.

More cities will be added in the near future, as well as additional glam services.

PS At last week’s launch party, I had my favorite sidekick, Ms. Ilana Rose. She was amazing, clapping during the presentation and smiling as mommy got her hair braided. Then, she was all too excited to snatch my swag bag. Fortunately, I don’t mind sharing with my princess.

As a newly crowned stay-at-home mom, – we let go of our nanny for reasons I will not share because my mother taught me not to promote negativity – I can truly speak to simple ways to live an Always Be Your Best You lifestyle because I get how precious time is and what we women need to do in order to carve out moments for ourselves.

In the morning, my daughter wakes up and claps or plays with her fingers for about 10-15 minutes. I firmly believe this is because a) my husband and I set a calm atmosphere around her and 2) we taught her that time alone isn’t a bad thing. Those 10-15 minutes** give me time to do a good one-minute stretch, brush my teeth with my beloved Crest 3D White toothpaste (a bright smile is an essential accessory for a stylish, happy day) while practicing side and back leg lifts (I know you have to see this in video to understand), and put on my diamond, star-stud earrings.  Then, when Ilana goes down for her 9:00-10:30am nap, I quickly shower, rub some Mama Mio Tummy Rub Oil (baby #2 !!) and put on my home makeup look. Yes, I wear makeup at home even though nobody is around. It makes me feel wonderfuland ready for the day. By 9:30am I’m at my desk, with the baby monitor by my side, and a laundry load already set and spinning.

** PS If you don’t have that 10-15 minute window of clap time, follow the sage advice of the fabulous June Ambrose“wake before the quake”. I live for this rockstar mom and her witty tidbits.
