Pamela + Vanessa #momsandwhine Ep.2 Mother’s Day pet peeves, gifts we really want, & shoe giveaway

Good evening mamas!

I hope you enjoyed watching Episode 2 of Pamela + Vanessa #momsandwhine. We’re having so much fun with these videos, in case it’s not obvious enough.

As always, each episode ends with a little show & tell. This week, I shared my love for Shh-oes, the quiet shoes I recently featured on PIX11 Morning News. They are super comfy, very quiet and moderately priced given that it’s leather.

Meanwhile, gadget guru Vanessa, my fabulous co-host, showed the new Nook Sleep feeding pillow that I might need to get for myself . I’ve been falling asleep in odd position on the living room floor. #MomBurnOut !!

Before we get to this week’s giveaway rules, the winner of last week’s giveaway is …. Aubrey Rochelle.

Good luck with this week’s giveaway, ladies.

Friday Five Finds: Pineapple Fashion and Fun for Mom, Kids and Home

Brrr!! What’s going on outside? Is it really just two days until May?

In an effort to will summer (let’s just forget about Spring) weather our way, today’s Friday Five Finds are inspired by the palm trees and pineapples I enjoyed on my recent vacation at Malliouhana Hotel & Spa‎ in Auberge. Pineapple fashion, pineapple fun, pineapple Friday Finds for all!

Pineapple Friday Five Finds

1. Overstock.com Pineapple Applique Burlap 20-inch Pillow $41.99 – Can someone please pore this mom a Pina Colada while she lounges? Reality check – mom, aka me, is likely poring someone a drink. But, my day will come!

2. MILLYicon Pineapple Print Rimini Short Jumpsuit $225 – Rompers are my new go-to staple because they can go from day to night with a change of shoes and some extra bold accessories. I’d totally rock this in Costco at 11am and a club (not that I’ve seen a club since 2010 … waaa waaaa) at 11pm.

3. MeMe London Lucky Pineapple Bracelet $51 – This is my new go-to brand for fun, stretchy braclets. Have you caught my arm candy love on Instagram?

4. Mini Melissaicon Baby’s & Toddler’s Pineapple Perforated Jelly Mary Jane Flats $58 – Because these are so much juicier than your average jellies.

5. ZARA Ice-cream and Pineapple T-Shirt $5.90 – Two fabulous summer essentials, plus one fabulous price, equals a win for mom and munchkin.

And now some views of the hotel, to warm up my soul before I head down to finish up tonight’s final Passover meal.

momBOSS interview: Ramy Sharp designer Ramy Brook fashion

Several years ago, while filming a makeover segment for CBS’s The Couch (RIP – I loved that show and crew), I met designer Ramy Sharp of Ramy Brook. Assertive, vivacious, impeccably coiffed, yet effortlessly casual, Ramy embodied her sexy, sophisticated brand. Several lunches and conversations later, I was hooked on the woman, her fashion brand (PS the Robi sleeveless top is a style staple) and the motherly wisdom she could share with me – I was a new mom with one baby, she already had three kids. I’m so happy Ramy was eager to be interviewed for this feature. She everything I think about when I envision a momBOSS*.Ramy Sharp of Ramy Brook

Pamela Pekerman: In your 20s you were a big shot advertising gal. When and why did you decide to take a break from work?

Ramy Sharp: When I graduated college I was determined to move to NYC. Once I decided not to go to law school, like both of my roommates, advertising seemed like a good field for me. It was corporate and social at the same time. After 10 years in the business, I had my first son. I went back to work on a freelance basis to keep my head in the game. However, it was tough for me to balance both work and being a new mom. So, I stopped working in advertising and took my skills into the philanthropic world where I could create my own hours, interact with adults, do good and be a mom.

Pamela: Since the launch of Ramy Brook in 2010, you’ve had tremendous success in a short period of time. Many moms have dreams, they never chase. What gave you the courage to follow your passion?

Ramy: When I launched Ramy Brook I was fulfilling a need for my own wardrobe. Every day, I would look in my closet and couldn’t find anything to wear. All I wanted was a sexy top to wear with jeans. I had no clue what I was doing, so I asked everyone I knew in the business for help. Jennifer Miller(jeweler) helped me secure the name, Stefani Greenfield (owner of Scoop) sat with me all day and taught me retail math among other things of how to build a brand. My friend hooked me up with her high school friend, Anika, a renowned pattern maker for a brand called Tuleh. Timing seemed to be on my side, as Tuleh closed its doors, so Anika and I worked day and night to create the first 7 pieces of the Ramy Brook collection. As I look back, I realize I didn’t have time to worry or question myself. I found a way to overcome my fears and stumbling blocks, because at the end of the day, I believed women needed these clothes as much as I did.

Pamela: With Ramy Brook, at what point did you realize, “Wow, I’m onto something big!”?

Ramy: I brought my collection to the famous personal shopper Betty Halbreich at Bergdorf Goodman. She had me hang my 7-piece collection in her dressing room. Betty had an appointment with Chelsea Handler’s stylist and when she walked in and saw the collection she wanted to take every top, I knew I was on to something. Chelsea ended up wearing the VR2 (very Ramy 2) in sky blue to her opening night at the Beacon.

Pamela: Who are some of the fabulous momBOSSes wearing Ramy Brook?

Ramy: Cindy Crawford is one of my all time favorite “momBOSSes” and wears Ramy Brook. Julianna Margulies, Alyssa Milano and Lisa Edelstein are some of my favorite celebrities wearing the brand as well.

IMG_6779

7d5286b1ee54c5e3e275bd50cd677377

Pamela: Who do you have in mind when you design the collections?

Ramy: Our girl is the multi-tasking woman who wants to feel confident in her clothing. She is busy, she is smart, she is happy and the clothes reflect that image to the world.

Pamela: What’s next for Ramy Brook?

Ramy: We have a few shops in the works, one in Southampton and one on the Upper East side. We are focusing on our website, in addition to scouting locations for a new brick and mortar store. Ramy Brook is a lifestyle brand and over the next few years the brand will grow in many other categories– accessories being one of them.

Pamela: How do you find time for YOU in your busy world? What do you love to do during Meaningful Me Moments?

Ramy: My free time is spent with my family– first and foremost. If my kids have a game, show, or school event I try to make it. Family dinners have become even more important, it’s a great way to connect even if it’s a few times a week. Because my days and nights are sometimes hectic I can appreciate the downtime more than ever before. I’m more focused when I have more to juggle.

IMG_4716-2015-08-27-sharp-family-summer-2015-v2

Pamela: Quick, you only have 2 minutes to prep and pamper your face. What are you top makeup/skin products?

Ramy: Neutrogena face wash and perfect tinted toner is my savior. I like a lot of Neutrogena products– the eye makeup remover is my favorite. As for makeup, I’m a big Laura Mercier fan, especially the lip gloss. I usually carry two at a time.

Pamela: Balance is a loaded, unrealistic goal, I prefer “Happy Formula”. So, what’s your Happy Formula for managing marriage, three kids, a growing fashion/lifestyle empire, and finding time for yourself?

Ramy: I’m not sure I’ve found the answer, but I genuinely enjoy the way I live my life. My husband is my rock and a big supporter both at home and at work. My kids bring me joy every day, which isn’t to say they don’t drive me nuts, but they will always be my reason to smile! Work enables me to have a passion outside my home. I believe in what we are building at Ramy Brook and I’m excited to share it with the world.D86699E3-C70F-4709-93FA-A6235EEBCBD2

Friday Five Finds: Earth Day Eco Essentials for Mom Kids & Home

Happy Earth Day!

Ever since I was in elementary school and we learned about the concept of “Reduce Reuse Recycle” – this was a rather novel concept to discuss with kids in the early 90s, at least in my corner of Brooklyn  – I’ve been a little budding environmentalist. I began to beg my parents to start recycling, which they did … eventually.

When I was a teenager, I wanted to be an environmental lobbyist working for Mother Nature against the evils of those that want to strip her naked. (But, an internship at YM Magazine (RIP) altered my dreams).

When I got married and became a home owner, I laid down the rules for more intense recycling, of course by now the NYC government had my back. Fines make people do all kinds of things that are good for them – buckle seat belts, recycle, etc.

Most recently, as you may know, I’ve been on a greener, cleaner path to improve my beauty routine, as well as be mindful of the ingredients my family and I inhale via cleaning products.

So, while today is EARTH DAY, these Friday Five GREENER Finds, aren’t just a convenient way to get more traffic on a day when everyone is searching for ways to stroke their eco ego. I’m genuinely excited about the improved health and wellness of myself, my family and my planet thanks to the below items.

As always, I would love to hear from you. Drop a comment below and let me know if you use any of these goodies or have your own tips for a cleaner, greener lifestyle.

FridayFive_042216

1. Plum Organics Grow Well Organic Infant Formula ($32.99/21oz) So, breast may be best, but you either don’t want to give up the boob (I totally get you), or your schedule doesn’t allow for best feeding and the machine is just too painful (ya, I’m with you) or you just aren’t producing enough milk (total bummer mama), for any or these reasons, new moms on the hunt for organic formula should check out this new product. I trust Plum Organics, as do many moms. Once you have earned a mom’s trust, we are with you at every turn. Rest assured should I have baby #3, and breast feeding may be off the table (CLICK HERE to read  why) I will likely be turning to this formula (made with organic lactose, no corn syrup solids added, No genetically engineered ingredients, DHA & ARA – basically all the good stuff without all the nasties our munchkins don’t need).

2. Seventh Generation Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent Free & Clear ($28.99/150oz) When I realized my son had eczema, I got a little tougher with my laundry detergent and finally settled on this winner from Seventh Generation. It’s clinically tested to be hypoallergenic, gets the dirt out (which is key, duhh) and it’s made without dyes, synthetic fragrances, petroleum-based ingredient or optical brighteners. Oh and COSTCO carries it – winning!

3. Tata Harper Fortifying Body Lotion ($68) As my acquaintance, secret BFF, and the author of Gorgeous for Good  Sophie Uliano says, if you only  make one greener switch in your beauty routine it should be your body lotion because it covers the biggest part of your, well, body. I’m a huge – read HUGE the way Presidential-hopeful Donald Trump pronounces the word – fan of this farm-to-face brand. The lotion is a great anti-aging, hydrating creme that lives on my nightstand, and gets replenished every 3-4 months.

4. Force of Nature ($89.99) – a brand new appliance that electrolyzes water and a premeasured capsule of salt, water and vinegar, creating two super powerful, cleaning-agent ingredients that are a non-toxic solution for your home. It’s literally a one-stop cleaning, deoderizing and disinfecting solution for the mama who wants a chemical-free option for her home that actually cleans! Ya, so skeptics take note: the electrolyzed water lasts for 2-weeks and it’s up to 10 times more effective than bleach, without the nasty, causes-my-eyes-to-weep smell.

5. The Organic Pharmacy Rose Diamond Face Cream $435 While I’ve been following The Organic Pharmacy on Instagram for about a year, I’ve only recently begun to use their products. While on the hunt for diamond-infused spa and beauty products for my first expert post for SpaWeek’s blog – wahhu READ IT HERE – I was having a hard time finding products that lived up to my greener, cleaner standards. Many diamond-infused and inspired cosmetic and skincare products had lots of luster on the outside and junk on the inside. Then I found this new Rose Diamond Face Cream and was blown away by its thoughtful ingredients. Most importantly, yes, it does have wonderful skin shining and plumping effects. You’ll start to see it over time. FYI This one is price, but when is a good diamond not?

Mom Musings: Toddler Temper Tantrums Have Arrived in My House, SOS HELP ME!

Oh, hi, remember me? It’s been a while, again. What can I say, being a mom isn’t easy! It takes over your life, zaps your energy and spits you out at the end of the night with just enough willpower to eat, hug a pillow and pass out.

Sorry, I should be more uplifting. Usually, I’m gabbing about staying positive, realizing you can’t do it all, all the time, telling you (and myself, in the process) that you should just slap on some mascara in the morning, find a little Meaningful Me Moment in the middle of the day, an
d go about your business cultivating an Always Be Your Best Your attitude.

Well, these past two weeks have burned me – err, scorched me.

My daughter has gone from one ear infection to the next. So, we are now seeing an Ear Nose Throat doctor. I’m praying our current course of action (a month of Flonase) will be enough to finally get rid of the fluid in her ears. If not, it’s ear tube time. My poor baby.

toddlertantrum1

Goofballs. Girlfriends. This is a the silly after the storm. Toddlers have more mood swings than PMSing teens! Wait, I haven’t raised a teen, yet. Oh SH*T, does it get worse? SOS. SOS.

In the middle of all that she also got afraid to go to the bathroom, thanks to a hard poop. The bulk of this drama – and it was DRAMA ten times over – unfolded while I was on vacation in Anguilla.

Vacation – what vacation? I woke up every day at 6am to watch home footage. I called in hourly. I spoke to doctors and parents. I tried to take a few breaths, but they were few and far between.

I came home to a daughter that was agitated and moody. I get it. She’s been through the ringer.

This week, with most of the health issues in check, I’ve been trying to minimize her outbursts.

What do you do when toddler temper tantrums become a real problem? Anyone? Anyone?

Yesterday, I cried.

Yesterday, I walked in the pouring rain talking to no one in particular.

Yesterday, I wanted to run away.

Yesterday, I still loved her.

Yesterday, I still squeezed her tight.

Yesterday, she was still my Ilanachka.

My Mom Crazy Eyes after a very stressful, tantrum-filled morning. And, do you see munchkin giving me her version of the Stink Eye?

Motherhood is crazy. Fortunately, I do crazy eyes.

A little Patchology therapy to unwind after a long, emotional day. #MeaningfulMeMoments … I passed out on the couch not long after.

There’s always another day. We still smile. We still love. We can handle anything. The elder of the “we” combats whine with wine #MomsandWhine

PS For those who follow me on Instagram, this post was meant to go up on Tuesday, but, you know, motherhood and exhaustion … Any who, here it is. I’m sharing and eager to hear any tips on how you handle your toddler temper tantrums.

Screaming at Your Toddler, How I Blew My Lid & Why I Want to Wine About It

The lid was blown. I had had enough. It was only 9:05am.

But, we were late to daycare. I called to make sure they would still provide breakfast. Breakfast usually ends at 9:20am. We just left the house. Daycare is a 10-15minute drive from the house.

The lid was blown. I had had enough. It was only 9:05am.

But, she was so cranky this morning. Getting dressed was a disaster. Brushing hair was brutal. Eating fruits and taking vitamins was on a whole new level of bad behavior.

The lid was blown. I had had enough. It was only 9:05am.

Did I mention it was only 9:05am?

But, from 6:45am – 9:05am there was whining, squirming, misbehaving, screaming, crying … Did I leave out any other naught –ing words?

Oh, and, a female-favorite, changing her opinion.

So, YES at 9:05am, in route to daycare, after barely leaving the house and being on the road for all of two minutes, during which time she asked – correction: whinnied and cried – for her pink bag, which she had dropped to the floor at the start of our journey. In between explaining to her that mommy cannot stop the car until we get to day care, she decided to get on another rant involving asking – correction: whining and crying – for me to turn on / turn off “ballet music” (it’s what she calls the classic station).

SCREAM!!!!

The lid was blown. I had had enough. It was only 9:05am and I screamed at my daughter in a voice and tone I don’t even use on adults.

She quietly whimpers. I quietly drive in shame.

Screaming at your toddler leads to nothing. It’s a fool’s tool to get children to stop whatever it is we want them to stop. And, it doesn’t usually work. It might scare them, shock them or both. But, it teaches nothing of substance.

I’m all for using a slightly harsher tone, but screaming is low brow. I don’t do anything to my children that I don’t want them to do to me or others, i.e. screaming or spanking.

My normal response in hard-to-handle, where-is-my-eject-button situations it to talk through it, raise my voice just enough to create a change, and state that there will be a punishment if the action doesn’t stop. Punishment usually involves sitting in “the cage” until I feel they have learned their lesson, apologized, and explained why they were punished.

Side bar: “the cage” is actually a 3ftx3ft area we created from colorful playpen walls used to keep kids in a set, safe place.

Where was I, oh, yes, screaming and blowing my lid!

Another tactic I use to avoid going off the rales, is singing.

I find it helpful to sing really ridiculous songs, while my toddler (or toddlers, if they are double teaming me) is crying or making ridiculous demands in a whining voice.

Sanity songs of choice include: Katy Perry Roar, Dolly Parton 9-to-5, and Chicago’s Cell Block Tango

She had it coming … She had it coming … She had it coming all along … If you’d have been there, if you’d have seen it … I betcha you would have done the same …

Oops, sorry. Back to 9:05am.

It was 9:05am. I’m only human. Okay, I’m a mom, so I’m actually super human. But, even super humans have lids that sometimes burst.

To all the moms that have blown their lids, I feel you. We are on a crazy journey. Some days our kids are angels, other days they are monsters. Some days we sing. Some days we scream. But, every day truly is a blessing!

Oh and TODAY is National Drink Wine Day.

Blow off some steam over a glass of your choice. I’ll  be enjoying a sweat Moscato from Bartenura.

If you’re up for a chat, let’s tweet while we drink. Join me from 9 – 9:30pm to talk about toddlers, tantrums and how we deal with crazy mornings! I’m @PamelaPekerman and the hashtag will be #WineandScreams … get it wine and scream … wine and cheese … whining and screaming

Friday Five Finds: All You Need is Love for Mom, Baby & Home

Coming to you live from my bed – hot tea, toast and honey at hand.

Oh, ya, I’m sick.

The voice is gone, but the spirit of love is pumping inside of me. In honor of Sunday’s big day – Okay, I don’t really care about Valentine’s day, but I do love love – here are five heartfelt All You Need is Love Friday Five Finds for Mom, Baby & Home.

Friday Five Finds with Heart

1. GAP Baby Sweater Tunics $15.99-$24.99 each – After Tuesday’s PIX11 segment on Bright Eyes, I went to GAP to pick up some V-day attire for the kids. We’re having a V-day party, on Sunday. By “we” I mean me, my husband, Ilana and David. What else would I want to do?!? GAP’s kids clothing can not be beat – fun designs, amazing quality and ideal prices. #ImAGapKidForLife

2. Target Threshold Small Metal Marquee Light Framed Heart $14.24 – Last year, my mom got us a cheesy heart shaped light. The kids love it. I love it. And, while mine isn’t exactly “chic”, this mimi marquee option from Target is definitively something you can weave into your bedroom, office, even kitchen decor.

3. 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Lip Butter in Peach $15 – Love your lives and keep them moist, even if you’re having a Vday party at home with the kids. I’m absolutely smitten with this beauty brand, which has no artificial dyes, fragrance, additives, preservatives and lead. Your pucker deserves perfection not poison.

4. Burlington Allover Lace Bodysuit $12.99 – Not that you should ONLY, were lingerie on Valentines Day, but do use it as an excuse to get a new set of naughties. This option, from one of my favorite off-price retailer (translation: amazing prices all the time) has maximum coverage, curved middle panels to create a slimmer look, and plenty of sultry appeal. Enjoy daily – AM or PM … or both.

5. Give Baking a Difference Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookies $39.95 / dozen – Since my cold and lots of work prevented me from baking a heart shaped sweet challah, that was going to be served with natella, my hubbies favorite condiment, I took necessary precautions and placed an order for these yummy, home-made cookies. Aside from being delicious and arriving in a lovely box, each purchase supports a worthy charity. Follow the founder Saira Gallo on Instagram to see how this momtrepreneur is doing her hustle.
