Mermaid Blankets, Yogurt for Hair, & more – FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

Cooper infused socks, mermaid blankets? The world is either going mad, or it’s time for my Friday Five Finds.

As always, I’m wishing you a blessed and bright weekend. Hopefully, you’ll make some much-deserved space for Meaningful Me Moments and self-care rituals.

Mermaid Blankets & more Friday 5 Finds by Pamela Pekerman

I Can Be A Mermaid

Snuggle into the hottest home essential – a mermaid blanket. Don’t laugh until you’ve tried it.

Nothing puts a smile on my face quite like snuggling into my ombre mermaid blanket (a Hanukah gift from my beloved sister Michelle Finkelshteyn) and enjoying a cup of tea … or glass of Rose – just depends on how the mom-day went down.

If you have a tween or teen, you probably already know about this craze. Truth: my twelve-year-old niece told me about it. #AmITooOldForThis

Greek Yogurt Hair Care

Hask is one of my favorite hair-care lines because their products are free of sulfates, parabens, and phthalates, and they always smell so good. It’s a full, sensory experience washing your hair.

Their newest concoction is Hask Greek Yogurt, which features a dual chamber delivery system, where one chamber is yogurt (hello protein, calcium, potassium and vitamins for my hair) and the other chamber contains fruit ingredients loaded with even more hair-healthy benefits.

Choose from Hydrating Fig & Honey (that’s my favorite), Repairing Blueberry & Acai, or Color Protection Pomegranate & Cranberry. Get yours at Walgreens. #GreekGoddessHair

Thoughtful Toys

I recently went on a donate-all-the-toys binge. YOXO building sets by Play from Scratch survived the purge because they really inspire my kids to imagine, create and, then, easily clean up!

YOXO is also the first line of sustainable building sets made in the U.S.A. of very durable wood pulp with vegetable-based inks and water-resistant coating. My son has yet to break a single piece.

Mamas, definitely check out YOXO To Go; it’s great for planes and other travel needs. #EcoToysRocks

Choose Happiness

Gorgeous to look at and thought provoking, Moorea Seal’s 52 Lists for Happiness is a great bed-side companion. I find myself falling in love with my life and myself thanks to the well-crafted list ideas and inspirational photos and take-action guidelines.

I would buy this journal for ALL of you, if I could. #MomTribeLove #52Lists

Copper for Your Feet

It took four-days of wearing iluminage’s Skin Rejuvenating Socks to believe the hype.

Copper-infused socks actually make your feet feel smoother and look better. I wore then to bed, to the gym and while running errands – no, it wasn’t the same pair – and felt comfortable.

When you slip them off and your feet don’t look dry and crusty, you’ll know why I’m singing the praise of these socks. #CopperPower

Simple Bone Broth Recipe, Wellness Benefits & Collagen Beauty Boost

Hey Mamas,

Bone broth, it’s the latest buzz for wellness warriors and beauty buffs. You need a good, simple bone broth recipe in your cooking repertoire.

My Baba (that’s Russian for “grandma”) Emma swears by bone broth.

If you’re feeling under the weather – bone broth.

If you’re tired – bone broth.

If you’re looking to boost your mood – bone broth.

My bone broth brings all the boys to the yard …

If your tummy hurts – bone broth.

What’s so special about bone broth, and why is every doctor, health expert and beauty blogger buzzing about it?

Collagen!

As I mentioned in last week’s blog post “3 Wellness Trends Worth Trying”, collagen is the most abundant protein in our body – basically like the “glue” that holds everything together. As we age, our bodies produce less and less of this magical substance. Less collagen equals saggy skin, wrinkles, loss of bone density, brittle hair, chipping nails, even gut-health issues.

Back when most Americans actually cooked more at home – bone broth included – our diet provided us with the boost of collagen our bodies no longer produced. Sadly, many now turn to stock broth from the grocery store, as opposed to making their own broth – that stock was likely not made on a bone, and it’s loaded with sodium.

To be perfectly honest, I only began to make my grandma’s bone broth recipe when my kids were born. Baba Emma, my mom and my mother-in-law used to make it for my husband and I, back in the good-old days. Okay, sometimes, they still make it for us! But, these days, I’m in on the action, as well. I’ve even recruited helpers.

My sous chef.

My sous chef recruited her own sous chef. #SmartGirl

At first, I had no idea how to start. Sadly, I never took the time to watch my baba make her bone broth recipe for us. I simply devoured the goods. Fortunately, my 92-year-old grandma was kind enough to share her recipe with me. It’s actually quite easy, and not as time-consuming as other recipes.

Yes, you can simmer your meat and bones on low for over 24-hours. But, seriously, is that ever going to happen in your life? It sure as heck isn’t going to be an option for me. #LetsBeReasonable

Le Creuset Stockpot, every home needs one.

Enjoy. Or as my family says, Nazdaroveya.

Grandma’s Homemade Chicken Bone Broth Recipe

Ingredients

8 Chicken Drumstick and Thighs (Bells & Even is the best store options – if you live on a farm, lucky you)

4 Medium Carrots, cut into threes

1 Large Parsnip, cut in half

1 Yellow Onion

1 Celery Stick, cut in half

Salt (to taste – trust: this is often where I need to phone-a-mom, my salt taste is terrible, hopefully yours is better)

Directions

Wash chicken and put into a deep pot. (I love Le Creuset 8qt Stock Pot because, aside from the beautiful enamel finish, you just get the best results with anything you make – even if you’re a faux-cook, like me. The $100 price tag pays for itself in yumminess and longevity of product.)

Back to the broth. Cover the meat with water and put on medium to high temp. Skim off anything that floats to the top. Once water boils, remove pot from heat and strain water out.

Gently wash the chicken. Put chicken back into the pot. Add whole onion, carrots, parsnip and celery. Pour already boiled water (I usually do it in the teapot) over chicken and vegetables. Turn stove to medium temp.

Keep skimming off fat and other impurities that float to the top, until the broth is clear. Then, turn  temperature to smallest flame, and let cook for 2 hours.

I saved a bowl for you. XO

FRIDAY 5 FINDS: Hygge Life Essentials for Cozy Weekends, January 5, 2017

Hey Mamas,

It’s my first Friday Five Finds of 2017, with a hygge twist!

Check out what’s keeping me sane and stylish, this week. I wasn’t really looking for a theme, but every find has a hygge vibe (that’s Danish for “cozy” aka celebrating the everyday moments).

Hygge Finds by Pamela Pekerman

1. Insta Print

If you’re like me, you have thousands of photos of your kids – waaaay more than your parents have of you! But, your parents, and mine, actually printed photos. Ya, they took the time to print photos and make albums.

Prynt let’s you print instantly. Simply attach the device to your iPhone and snap a photo. A tiny, built-in printer produces a hard-copy photo, and the Prynt app records a video to go with the image. The Prynt case photo can be scanned with your phone’s QR technology to bring the image to life on your screen via that video.

Don’t even ask meabout that last line means. I took it from their website. I know it’s a cool feature. I still haven’t used that bit. But, I have made my grandmother very happy, by giving her photos right on the spot. #GranmasLovePrints

2. Sweeter Sweaters

J Jill makes some of the best sweaters and pullovers. When I can’t think in the morning, I grab a cream or white knit, pair with a skinny jean, some diamond-stud earrings and wide-rim sunglasses, and I’m done. NO SWEATPANTS TO DAYCARE. Repeat as needed!!

For mamas who still aren’t familiar with J.Jill, I urge you to check them out online, or a store near you. The photos don’t do most of the sweaters justice. You have to feel, try and style your way. Head over to Instagram for my insta stories, to see which sweater I’m wearing, today #KeepingWarm

3. Ending Mealtime Madness

N+B is a hip brand that focuses on “toys for cooler parents” – gotta love that slogan! This Meal Wheel is great not only for promoting family conversation, but, it makes a game out of eating. Playtime meets mealtime meets sanity! #Winning

4. Chicer, Cleaner Candles

Lucid Candle always looks great, never melts, is super safe (no sparks, no soot) and has a natural fragrance. The candle shell is made of a polymer that never burns down, and you simple remove the top fiberglass wick, pour in lucid liquid paraffin, and enjoy. Click here to see how they work.

Candles are hygge approved. And this fuss-free option, is a Friday-night essential. #AllKidsToBe #WereAdulting

5. Speak-to-Me Stones

I found Eye of the Sea, a fabulous new-to-me, jewelry brand, last year, at an Accessories Council showcase. With my new love for gemstones and spiritual jewelry, I was hooked on the simple, yet, elegant bracelets.

I’ve been rocking the brand’s Rose Quarts (self love) bracelet, but for 2017 I’m adding amethyst (stone of spiritual healing and growth) and maybe peridot (color of the year and stone of relationships). Give it a try. If nothing else, you have a nice piece of jewelry. #GettingStoned

The Gift of Sleep, a Mom Essential: Sleep Comfort Month

Hey Mamas,

I hope you had a blessed, joyful holiday weekend.

Okay, I actually hope you got lots and lots of sleep. Really! Isn’t that what we all want? Just a small spot (pillow optional) to curl up and drool for a few hours.

With the holiday hustle-and-bustle upon us, does anyone find it odd that November is National Sleep Comfort Month?

Forget about comfort, how about just lobbying for National Mom Will Sleep Anywhere Anyway Month? (PS I’m so going to try and make that official, some day.)

Day-care holiday parties, Thanksgiving decorating, charity fundraising, corporate gatherings, gift shopping, fa la la la la la la la la ….
Sleep, when?

But, seriously, quality sleep is a luxury me and most moms could not put a price tag on. And, it’s something we need to try and prioritize.
TRUTH – I’m sitting at Le Pain Quotidien on Lexington Avenue and 64th Street, at 3pm on Monday barley keeping my eyelids open, as I draft this post. This has become my permanent state.

Which is why I’m committing myself to focusing on sleep.

Oxygen. Food. Sleep.

Here are a few tips I’m trying to incarnate into my life, in order to improve my sleep routine. I hope they resonate with you, as well.

1. Learn to Say NO

There are only so many hours in the day, and 9pm-12am is not the time to work on an arts-and-crafts project for your son’s class. (Guilty – but I’m trying to change). It’s okay to say no to someone or something else, and say yes to you time, sleep time.
Don’t volunteer for every cause. If you pass out while gathering canned soup, you’ll be of no use to the charity you’re supporting, or your own family. Don’t agree to bake a cake for your kid’s holiday party – buy it! Don’t feel the need to accept every holiday invitation. Your friends will understand. And, they would much rather you focus on the dark circle under your eyes. Seriously, they told me so.

2. Learn to Let Go

Your kids will be fine if you go on vacation, mini vacation, or frequent date nights. They will live if someone else tucks them into bed. You are a kickass mom. But, if you are running low on fuel, you will burn out and be a miserable Grinch. Don’t be a Grinch.
Get yourself to a bed – even if it means you sleep at your mother-in-law’s house during the day, while a babysitter comes and watches the kids for a few hours. YES, I’ve done that. I’ve actually called a babysitter to come and watch my kids while I “go to work”. Work meant sleep … one block down … at my in-law’s house… at 2pm. #ChooseSleep

This Works Deep Sleep sleep comfort month

3. Go to Your Bedroom

Going to your bedroom doesn’t mean you have to go to sleep. But, commit to being in your sleep space by a reasonable hour. I’ve trained my kids to be in bed by 8pm. Now, I’m aiming to train myself to be in the bedroom by 10pm. This can be journal time, reading time, meditation time, bath time, whatever time. #MeaningfulMeMoments

Me Time Sleep Time Sleep Comfort Month

4. Get Soothing Sleep Supporters

From sleeping on silk, to spraying your pillow with sleep-supporting essential oils, the below are my absolute favorite sleep props. You’ll especially want to get everything – EVERYTHING – from This Works, a UK-based brand that puts sleep at the center of its beauty empire. All their products focus on your body’s natural circadian rhythm (aka your sleep/wake cycle or body clock). This Works’ Deep Sleep Superblend, is a must for any mom looking to reboot her sleeping beauty routine.

Enjoy the last few days of Sleep Comfort Month, and keep me posted on your sleep strategy and success. As always, I’ll be sharing my highs, lows, and sleep-deprived woes on Instagram, Facebook ,and Twitter. #GiftMomSleep

World Kindness Day: NEON by Paul Mitchell Supports Anti-Bullying & Positivity

Hey Mamas,

It’s Sunday night, and I hope you had a kind, cozy day, because today is World Kindness Day. And, with the angry, bitter presidential election behind us, I wanted to spotlight a brand that’s actually putting more positivity and kindness into the world.

Recently, I attended the launch of NEON a new teen-focused hair care line from Paul Mitchell. The event was a feel-good gathering of women in media, surrounded by inspirational quotes and neon bright lights — and yellow rock candy!

neon_paul_mitchell_world_happiness_day_3

neon_paul_mitchell_world_happiness_day_4

Aside from being powered by sugar ingredients that allow for sweet, endless styling possibilities (Ya, I’ve tested the goods and rediscovered my teen spirit) NEON is also all about #StandOutStyle.

It’s about you being you, not following the herd. Or, as I always preach, Always Be YOUR Best YOU.

NEON aims to empower teens, at a time when social media is bringing the bully home. As a mom, I worry about cyberbullying, not to mention the overall negative tone our media and political leaders are projecting to our youth.

That’s why I want all you moms to support companies like Paul Mitchell, that are leading the charge against bullying and putting more kindness into the world.
neon_paul_mitchell_world_happiness_day_2

Let’s empower our girls to be unique, love themselves, spotlight positivity, squash negativity, create positive changes within their schools and communities, and be leaders we can admire.

Via NeonHair.com as well as the NEON instagram feed, you’ll find a space for anti-bullying advocates and organizations to share their message in order to drive awareness and create a conversation to inspire teens.

There, you can get to know Britain Bennett, an amazing 17 year old who blew me away at the  NEON press event, two weeks ago. She’s turned her own bullying hardships (including not wanting to get it of bed, and even wishing she were dead!!) into a movement dubbed TBH to show all girls we are united against negativity.

The TBH platform, stands for

T – “talk to someone”

B – “block harmful words from your head and your heart”

H – “help others”

Here’s to girls like Britain Bennett, brands like NEON by Paul Mitchell, and anyone else that’s putting a little kindness into the world.

As my mom always says, “Kindness counts.”

Happy World Kindness Day! And, have a kind and happy week!

3 New Kids Shopping Websites and Apps You’ll Love

By now, Back-to-School is in full swing. From Manhattan to Miami and Houston (waha Texas mamas, it was great seeing ya’ll last week!!) to Hoboken, moms everywhere are breathing a little easier now that summer’s casual vibes have been replaced with fall’s structured schedule.

For me, last week was the first time that both my munchkins were in full-time day care all week long. It was also the kick-off of my first media tour (translation: lots of TV segments, in many cities, in a short period of time) since the birth of my daughter back in 2013.

During my travels, I had the pleasure of chatting with many moms, and one thing we all agreed upon is that time is not on our side.

“I just need one more day,” said one mom on my flight from Houston to Dallas.

“It’s a lot. All of it. Work. Kids. Home. I just want to catch my breath,” said another young mom at LaGuardia Airport, as we bonded over our love of Korean skin-care brands.

These amazing women reassured me that my desire to focus on time saving tips and products for busy moms, is essential!!

With both my munchkins in day care, I’m going to make a stronger push to blog more often, share more products (because I do come across so many amazing tools that have made my life easier, and can help you, as well) and also share more about my journey in the crazy land of motherhood.

Now, looping back to back to school mode, if you haven’t found the time to scoop up some new fashion and accessories for your kids, fear not! I’ve found three cool and innovative kids shopping websites and apps that will make yur Back to School shopping a breeze.

KidsShoes.com

Am I the only mom that can’t figure out what shoe size to buy for her kids? I get so excited when I find a shoe that fits, I tend to keep my daughter or son in them for as long as possible. (Which explains why we had no rain boots today! What, sandals were totally appropriate in terenchal downpour.)

So, if you’re like me, and shoe-shopping for your kids is an exercise in click, receive, print return label, and repeat, then you will love KidsShoes.com. KidsShoes.com creative director, Sarah Caplan, teamed up with footwear experts to create a patent-pending universal measuring system called KidsSizing, which allows parents to size their child’s foot online via an app, and purchase shoes that fit correctly every time.

If you’re not a mama that likes to app, there is an option to print out their simple size chart, as well.

KidsShoes.com untitled3

RocketsofAwesome.com

The name alone is killer, right? Well, RocketsofAwesome.com will rock your kid’s wardrobe world by saving you time finding on-trend and affordable fashion that your toddler or tween will want to wear.

Each season, they handpick a selection of high-quality, stylish clothing and ship it to your doorstep in a color-me-if-you-like box. That’s a fun bonus, my 3-year-old and 2-year-old really enjoyed, while I enjoyed a cup of Café Bastelo instant coffee.

Another bonus: value. All items are under $40 and can easily mix and match with each other.

Below, Ilana wears sunglasses, black leggings with hearts and a pink top that are awesome, of course.

rockets_of_awesome_1

rockets_of_awesome_2

rockets_of_awesome_3

KidBox.com

How can shopping become a tool for social good and education? Simple. KidBox.com not only has stylists curate seasonal essentials from top brands lie Reebox, Kensie, Seventh Generation and PUMA, at below retail prices, they will also donate a box of clothing to a child in need if you keep your entire box.

A whole box costs $98, and there are four per year. Each box contains 5-7 items, including a fun lifestyle goody like ABC stickers or a book, depending on your child’s age.

When we got our box, I let my daughter play with the clothing and try them on, but I also told her that we would be helping give clothing to another little girl or buy that really needs it. Even at 3, I want her to know that we always have opportunities to give of ourselves, be it via time, money or making purchases with heart.

momBOSS Interview with Nicole Feliciano MomTrends.com Founder and Author

I’ve known Nicole Feliciano, the founder of MomTrends.com, for over five-years. I can’t recall how we met, but I can recall the countless amount of times she has shown up for me – at events I was hosting (even when she only had 15-minutes to spare), social media contests that I needed help promoting, even personal advice when I felt lost in motherhood land. She’s a girl’s girl, a sharer, a dreamer, a media mogul, and a natural voice for the next generation of moms itching to find their inner momBOSS.

Last week, Nicole’s first book Mom Boss: Balancing Entrepreneurship, Kids and Success hit shelves. Before kicking off her book tour, she sat down with me to share some wisdom about her journey from the corporate world, to mommy land and her happy formula for mom boss success.

Mom Boss Nicole Feliciano MomTrends Founder and Author

So many moms have dreams they never pursue. What gave you the courage to leave your corporate job, start MomTrends and become a killer momBOSS?

I’m so inspired by the women, like my mom, who worked so hard to give my generation of women OPTIONS. I was raised believing I could do anything I wanted. Now, I want to blaze one too–where women get to work on their own terms. I wanted to create a life full of family and opportunity, and I knew no one would hand me the life I wanted.

What was your original vision for MomTrends and how has it evolved?

MomTrends was always meant to be a resource for moms to find lifestyle tips and a emotional boost, in an otherwise busy day. All our content is meant to be pretty, purposeful, inspiring and social.

What does a typical morning look like for you?

I get up at 6:45am. My girls, now 11 & 8, usually come in for snuggles in the morning. Mr. Momtrends whips up breakfast, and we take turns walking them to school. I try to work out in the morning before I head to my We Work office in DUMBO.

Once at my desk I try to do something creative to kick start my day–either styling a fashion shoot or writing. Then, it’s time to dig into calls and strategy sessions with my team. In the afternoon, I try to attend networking events. Most nights we eat dinner as a family. I cook 5-6 nights a week. Unplugged time is sacred. I try to log off from 6-9pm when the family is together. I have special reading time with each girl. My tween and I are really into adventure books; right now we are knee-deep in Masterminds. I read with the little one second because she’s the night owl. Right now we are reading Melody, the newest book from American Girl.

I pop back online after spending time with the hubby. Usually writing and taming the beast of email until well after midnight. Did I mention I crave more sleep?

Mr.Momtrends and I have date night once a week where we go out and try to avoid talking about work and kids–it’s our time to rekindle the romance!momboss_nicolefeliciano_2

momboss_nicolefeliciano_3

momboss_nicolefeliciano_4

Quite the schedule! What’s your biggest tip for juggling personal, professional and family needs?

Keep a calendar. When I look at my calendar I can tell if I am overcommitted. I need to see a month, week and day mapped out and where I need to cut back. Sometimes the kids’ calendars look too complicated and I trim those down, sometimes I have too many meetings for work. I am constantly trying to juggle the calendar.momboss_nicolefeliciano_5

What other tools/services do you recommend for aspiring mom entrepreneurs?

Get a good accountant–one that will really hold you accountable for profitability.

In your book, I love that you say “Comparison is the thief of joy.” How do you avoid looking over your shoulder and comparing yourself to other moms, as it’s such a cultural epidemic?

When you have a pride in authorship, you know you are on the right path. When I truly enjoy what I am creating I tend to look forward to what’s next, not side to side to see who is doing the same thing. Stay interesting. Never stop learning and don’t be boring.

What advice would you give to a mom who’s been out of the game for 5, maybe 10 years and now would like to become a momBOSS not only in her home, but outside the home, as well?

Start small. Find a part-time gig and test out your skill set. Experiment trying on a few things–maybe at home sales, or setting up a small Etsy shop. Analyze how you feel with each step and what worked so you can make informed decisions about your future.

Many moms turn to social media and the web as a means to create a business, while still being more available to their family. Is there still space in the online world for new voices?

Absolutely! Find a niche that inspired you. New faces need to come in with a fresh voice. Ask yourself what makes you passionate? You need to be able to have a sustained enthusiasm for your topic. And figure out early on, is this a hobby or a business. If it’s a hobby, don’t get frustrated that you aren’t making money. If it’s a business, figure out early on how you are going to become profitable.

What tips would you give to an aspiring mommy blogger, vlogger or Instagramer?

Have a consistent look and voice. Don’t try to be everything to everyone. To create a true community you need to be niche. I suggest making a mission statement for your personal brand. What are you about? What topics WON’T you cover. Make a vision board and stick to it. Don’t chase trends, make trends.

What’s next for MomTrends Media?

The Mom Boss big book tour! Coming to a city near you!Mom Boss Nicole Feliciano book cover

Balance is a loaded, unrealistic goal, I prefer “Happy Formula”. In your book you also state “You have to embrace that you can only do a few things really well at one particular time.” What’s your Happy Formula for managing all corners of your momBOSS world?

I focus on family first, then work. If I feel like I am giving these two things my best I am winning. I say no to so many things. Saying no allows me to make more space to live in the moment. My girls are the delicious ages of 11 & 8 right now. I don’t want to miss a moment. Sleep gets sacrificed and pursuit of outside interests.

How do you find time for YOU #MeaningfulMeMoments in your busy life?

I run! I have two women who I regularly run with. I love multi-tasking. I catch up with my girlfriends AND get exercise. It’s a win/win! If you aren’t on social media or don’t run, it’s tough for me to maintain a friendship.

Quick, you only have 2 minutes to prep and pamper your face. What are your top makeup/skin products?

I love the Kiehl’s tumeric mask for a pick me up. I always keep a mask in my fridge to de-puff my eyes in a flash.

momBOSS Quotes: Gold Medalist & Olympic Mother Kerri Walsh Jennings

In the spirit of Rio 2016 Olympics, I couldn’t help but get inspired by the personal story of Volleyball champ (to put it mildly) and momBOSS mother Kerri Walsh Jennings.

momBOSS mother Kerri Walsh Jennings

Sometimes my passion is just to make it through the mornings. #momlife

In a recent NBC profile, I saw how Walsh Jennings’  manic mornings “mamagering” three children ages 7, 6 and 3, is no different than any of our mornings.

Sure, she has three consecutive gold medals in beach volleyball from 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympics.

Sure she’s poised to win another gold medal tonight, in Rio, with new partner April Ross. Tune in TONIGHT 8pm! (Okay, record it because chances are the kids aren’t sleeping, yet. Rggg daylight saving time. I long for it to get dark at 6pm so we can be back at our 7:30/8pm sleep time.)

And, sure Walsh Jennings has graced the covers of countless magazines.

But, were I to have the privilege to speak to her, I’m sure she would say that the hardest and most fulfilling job is these mornings with daughter Margery, and sons Joseph and Sundance.

momBOSS mother Kerri Walsh Jennings

Since I can’t phone into Rio to get a direct quote, here are some inspirational nuggets Walsh Jennings has said over the years. They don’t all directly pertain to her role as a mom, but I feel many of them can help us better ourselves personally and professionally.

Translation: Stop judging other moms. Be the best mom YOU can be.

momBOSS mother Kerri Walsh Jennings

Tomorrow, I might actually be a better version of myself, but I’m in no way interested in being any version of someone else. #authentic #selflove

I hope some of these Olympic inspiration quotes from Kerri Walsh Jennings help you refocus and be better morning mamagers, when it’s time to …

negotiate with toddlers, get everyone dressed, no shoes are not an option, feed yourself while you stand, comb hair (yourself included), put on their SPF, make sure everyone’s bag is packed with snacks because g-d forbid they go to day care where everything is 100% organic and yummy with a snack from mom … okay that was my morning! I’m documenting it on Instagram’s new Stories feature

momBOSS Interview: Rosena Sammi Jewelry Designer, Who’s Sari Now Founder

There’s plenty of negativity in the world, which is dramatized ten-fold by our media. But, I’m often struck by the immense selflessness and global consciousness I encounter from the fabulous females in my life. As a member of the media I want to shed more light on the goodness in this world, especially if it’s a kick-ass, do-gooder mom like Rosena Sammi. See how this lawyer-turned-jewelry-designer is making sure we dazzle in her accessories, paying-it-forward via her charity collaborations, all while being a momBOSS to two adorable girls.

Pamela Pekerman: What gave you the courage to leave your profession as a lawyer and launch a jewelry business?
Rosena Sammi: I wish I knew, I would employ that courage and confidence more often! But, I think it had something to do with being in New York. This city makes you feel like anything is possible.

Pamela:  At what point did you feel fully confident in your decision to go into jewelry?
Rosena: I don’t think I ever felt 100% fully confident because it’s a journey, and each season presents you with new challenges. Having said that, after having children I truly appreciated the benefits of being my own boss and the flexibility that comes with that. I’ve been able to enjoy motherhood a lot more because of it.

Pamela: At what point into your business did you become a mom?
Rosena: I became a mom about four years into the business. It drastically changed my ability to escape to India and spend months creating a collection, but it improved my efficiency tremendously.Rosena Sammi Chail RingRosena Sammi necklace

Pamela: What tips do you recommend for the mom who’s trying to find her passion and live her true path?
Rosena: Don’t be afraid of what other people think. It’s good to get out of your comfort zone and take risks.

Pamela: How has motherhood changed your perspective on work?
Rosena: My perspective on what’s important in life became a great deal clearer, literally overnight. I find I don’t sweat the small stuff and I’m able to focus on things that matter.

Pamela: What does a typical morning look like for you?
Rosena: I’m early to rise, which helps because the morning is when I speak with India and deal with the production side of my business. Some days I’m able to fit in a quick workout before my girls are up at 6:30am, and our morning routine begins. It’s a lot of girl talk over the breakfast table and then off to school and pre-school. After that, I head to the office to see what the day holds. I’m fortunate enough to have an office in the city and a home office in Westchester, so I do my best to split my week between the two so I get the best of both worlds. I’m busy running my business, but I am also able to be the “Class Mom” for my daughter’s Kindergarten class.

Pamela: Class Mom and Mom Boss, talk about a real #mamager! What tools/services/people help you manage it all?
Rosena: My husband, despite his very busy work and travel schedule, is definitely a true partner in the home so he deserves my first shout out. Secondly, I couldn’t live without services like Fresh Direct and Amazon (not to mention Net a Porter!). And, it does take a village, so after school help, house keeping and my team (in office and virtual) are all important.

Pamela: You are very passionate about philanthropy, particularly the plight of women around the world. How has motherhood impacted your philanthropy choices?
Rosena: Motherhood and especially having two daughters encouraged my focus on the inequity in the world for women. The fact that in so many cultures we are second-class citizens is disheartening, and I’m trying to do something about that in my small way.

Pamela: How did you come up with the concept for Who’s Sari Now?
Rosena: I wanted to design something that was more “green” than my typical collection. After much research and experimentation, I hit upon using upcycled sari fabrics and the result is Who’s Sari Now?. I was also looking to give back to the community, after years in the business I realized that helping people was more important to me than jumping on the next trend. I was fortunate enough to meet the founder of Apne Aap, Ruchira Gupta. Her organization rescues women and children from sex trafficking in India, and provides them with a job and education. It was the perfect match. 20-25% of proceeds from sales goes towards educating these young children, and I employ many of the women in making the collection. Changing lives in this way has been so rewarding.

Pamela: Leading by example, especially as a mom, is key. How do you teach your children the value of good will, and helping those in need?
Rosena: They love to learn and help me with Who’s Sari Now?. The tags feature a little Indian girl from Apne Aap, so it feels very close to home. We made mini-tote bags for a multi cultural festival at my eldest daughter’s elementary school and they helped me give them out.

Pamela: What has been your biggest professional success, thus far?
Rosena: The firsts always feel good. When my jewelry was first in Vogue, when I created an exclusive collection for Neiman Marcus, those are things I will always remember.

Pamela: What’s next for Rosena Sammi?
Rosena: More exploration of enterprise development with women’s collectives. It definitely feels good to do good.

Pamela: How do you find time for YOU in your busy life aka Meaningful Me Moments?
Rosena: It’s a constant challenge, but I’ve gotten better at it! I take a weekly French class at Alliance Francais, this is one thing that allows me quite literally to escape to a different world.

Pamela: Quick, you only have 2 minutes to prep and pamper your face. What are your top makeup/skin products?
Rosena: UltraLuxe MoisturiserGuerlain Terracotta Bronzing PowderBobbi Brown Luxe Lip in Retro Red

I hope my kids think mom is a good role model.

Motherhood is a challenge, but with the very best rewards.

The best advice my mom ever gave me was that I am capable of achieving anything if I work really hard.

Summer Beauty Inspired by BBQ and Beach

Summer Beauty Ingredients Inspired by BBQ & Beach, on Great Day Washington, Plus How I Almost Missed My Shoot #MommyHood

What a week! How is it only Wednesday afternoon? For those of you who don’t live in DC, below is my “Summer Beauty Inspired by BBQs and the Beach” segment, featured on Great Day Washington wusa9, yesterday. Thank you to my girl Meaghan Mooney for rocking it out with me, once again.

Before I go ahead and share all the retail credit (I hate when shows don’t actually tell you where you can buy items … That’s why I post it on this blog), allow me to vent about the past 72-hours in mommyhood.

Saturday Morning – Ilana, my 3-year-old has been on antibiotics for three days. Strep isn’t contagious anymore. It’s okay to play/interact with David, my 2-year-old. The heatwave is keeping all of us indoors. Family bonding and fun.

Ilana_July_2016

Saturday Afternoon – everyone is napping. I usually get anywhere from 2-3.5hrs to do my own thing. “my own thing” could be laundry, sleep, shower, prepping for segments, planning the kids week ahead, blogging, etc. Time is cut short when David wakes up with a deep wheezing cough. Right away, my husband and I know David has croup. Been there, heard that. Text doctor. Calm David. Open fridge doors and sit next to cold air with him.

Saturday Wraps Up – David is being nebulized with Meds to help open his airways. We now have these on hand. Doctor has approved. Does he have strep? Tomorrow it’s another office visit. Meanwhile, what about my trip to DC? Shoot!!

Sunday Morning – Ilana is with my in-laws, while hubby and I take David to Brooklyn where our Pediatrician practices on weekends. Okay, no strep, just croup. Keep nebulizing.

Sunday Afternoon – I can’t cancel on “Great Day Washington”. I did that last month when I rushed a very dehydrated, stomach-aching Ilana to the hospital. Who’s going to book me? Why bother working even a little?

David_July_2016

Sunday Evening – okay maybe mom can help. Nope not the whole time. Nanny, but not all Monday and Tuesday and plus it’s two sick kids. Nobody can handle that but mommy! But I need to go.

Monday Morning – still haven’t canceled. Gotta cancel.

Monday (late) Morning – a combo of mom, in-laws, nanny, cleaning lady (my daughter loves her!!) and hubby make my 30-hour business trip possible. This was a close one.

Monday 1 hour later – I’m heading to the airport!!

THAT’s mom life. It’s a crazy, cooky existence. But, I truly appreciate every insane moment. When you see me on TV talking about time savers, products that help me (try to) keep it together, I’m speaking from my heart. To be a (semi) decent mamager, you have to be flexible and know that the plan doesn’t always go according to plan!

Now, where’s my moisturizer, silk sleep mask and Rose?

CHARCOAL

Activate charcoal is a clear winner for adsorbing oil and debris from pores on our face and body, making it the must try beauty ingredient of the moment. I’ve already raved about this black magic wonder on PIX11 NY.

Summer Beauty Charcoal

  • HASK Charcoal with Citrus Oil Collection ($2.49-$5.99) A complete line that features a Shampoo ($5.99), Conditioner ($5.99), and Deep Conditioner ($2.49) that are formulated to give you a deep clean and bring hair back to life. Charcoal, a hero ingredient derived from coconut shells in the Philippines, acts as a magnet and attracts and removes impurities – like product build-up from all the anti-frizz us East-Coast gals are using during list latest heat wave – so you are left with hair that is full of body and shine.
  • First Aid Beauty Cleansing Body Polish with Active Charcoal ($28) This multi-tasking treatment cleanses, exfoliates and smooths to banish bumps and reduce flaky skin. The clay-based paste turns into a foaming scrub when blended with water, making it an ideal prep step for flawless self-tanner application.

SEAWEED

If you love the Vitamin C, iron and calcium boost you get from your seaweed salad, you’ll want the superior hydration as well as anti-aging and anti-inflammatory benefits it gives as a hero beauty ingredient.

Summer Beauty Seaweed

  • The Body Shop Seaweed Clarifying Toner ($15) Don’t skin on toner, like many gals do. This alcohol-free toner,  refreshes the skin, removing traces of makeup (ya you still see plenty of makeup even after a good cleanser) and bladderwack seaweed from Ireland leaves skin looking shine-free. looking skin.
  • Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner ($5.79) Due to FedEx errors, these products didn’t actually make it into my segment, which is a shame because I’m such a fan of this sulfate-free shampoo. The Seaweed Extract and naturally derived cleansers help rebalance hair’s  moisture levels, so we’re not dryied out and lack-luster.

WATER

You know drinking 6-8 glasses of water keeps your body hydrated, but did you know the ingredient is just as important in keeping your skin healthy? It’s all about 24/7 hydration perfection.

Summer Beauty Water

  • BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation ($44) The 32% water composition of this liquid foundation makes it super lightweight and easy to apply. It’s also free of parabens, sulfates and phthalates.
  • SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator ($178) Your skin will want to drink this up! The serum helps diminish appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid ( you know, that cool stuff young kind produces in abundance making it look plump!!).  Use HA5 twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Apply it after toning, and treating your skin, right before you moisturize.

ALGAE

Summer Beauty Algae

They may be the bottom of the underwater food chain, but up here, algae are sitting reaching the top of the beauty world. The living plant organisms are the latest ocean ingredients making motion on land because they have many proteins, amino acids and minerals.  Think stimulating collagen and evening out the skin tone, for starters!

  • Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Night Cream ($76) If you invest in one beauty item, it should be nighttime rejuvenation. This award-winning cream normalizes your levels with moisture-magnet lipids called ceramides that are made in abundance by young skin. Wake to skin that looks strengthened, younger-looking, smoothed, firmer, more lifted, and minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles thanks to key ingredients like algae extract.
  • Tata Harper Beautifying Face Oil ($48) You know I adore this company! This lightweight, fast-absorbing face oil hydrated skin surface, and creates a brighter and firmer appearance. The brown algae extract reduce the appearance of dullness and fatigue – ya, I’m talking to you new mom. You want this in your bathroom cabinet.

PS Shout out to my beloved David, who’s doing much better, and taking a nice nap, while mommy types away.
