What’s so special about bone broth, and why is every doctor, health expert and beauty blogger buzzing about it?

Collagen!

As I mentioned in last week’s blog post “3 Wellness Trends Worth Trying”, collagen is the most abundant protein in our body – basically like the “glue” that holds everything together. As we age, our bodies produce less and less of this magical substance. Less collagen equals saggy skin, wrinkles, loss of bone density, brittle hair, chipping nails, even gut-health issues.

Back when most Americans actually cooked more at home – bone broth included – our diet provided us with the boost of collagen our bodies no longer produced. Sadly, many now turn to stock broth from the grocery store, as opposed to making their own broth – that stock was likely not made on a bone, and it’s loaded with sodium.

To be perfectly honest, I only began to make my grandma’s bone broth recipe when my kids were born. Baba Emma, my mom and my mother-in-law used to make it for my husband and I, back in the good-old days. Okay, sometimes, they still make it for us! But, these days, I’m in on the action, as well. I’ve even recruited helpers.

At first, I had no idea how to start. Sadly, I never took the time to watch my baba make her bone broth recipe for us. I simply devoured the goods. Fortunately, my 92-year-old grandma was kind enough to share her recipe with me. It’s actually quite easy, and not as time-consuming as other recipes.

Yes, you can simmer your meat and bones on low for over 24-hours. But, seriously, is that ever going to happen in your life? It sure as heck isn’t going to be an option for me. #LetsBeReasonable

Grandma’s Homemade Chicken Bone Broth Recipe

Ingredients

8 Chicken Drumstick and Thighs (Bells & Even is the best store options – if you live on a farm, lucky you)

4 Medium Carrots, cut into threes

1 Large Parsnip, cut in half

1 Yellow Onion

1 Celery Stick, cut in half

Salt (to taste – trust: this is often where I need to phone-a-mom, my salt taste is terrible, hopefully yours is better)

Directions

Wash chicken and put into a deep pot. (I love Le Creuset 8qt Stock Pot because, aside from the beautiful enamel finish, you just get the best results with anything you make – even if you’re a faux-cook, like me. The $100 price tag pays for itself in yumminess and longevity of product.)

Back to the broth. Cover the meat with water and put on medium to high temp. Skim off anything that floats to the top. Once water boils, remove pot from heat and strain water out.

Gently wash the chicken. Put chicken back into the pot. Add whole onion, carrots, parsnip and celery. Pour already boiled water (I usually do it in the teapot) over chicken and vegetables. Turn stove to medium temp.

Keep skimming off fat and other impurities that float to the top, until the broth is clear. Then, turn  temperature to smallest flame, and let cook for 2 hours.

3 Wellness Trends for 2017 That Are Easy and Worth Trying

Today, I’m sharing 3 Wellness Trends for 2017, that are really worth embracing.

I learned about these trends through my own wellness evolution over the past year, as well as attending an amazing 2017 Wellness Trends event hosted by Well+Good.

Gotta be honest – I’m not a “wellness expert” or “fit fab mom” or “health coach”. I’m just a gal trying to figure out the best way to live a cleaner, greener, healthier, and more spiritually-sane life. I’ve selected the below three “trends” (FYI I hat this word) because they are easy to implement, make sense, and could make your life a little brighter and better.

Wellness Trends #1 – Anti-Bootcamp Fitness + Body Recovery

We’ve become obsessed with high-intensity workouts and bootcamp exercise classes that leave us gasping for air. I was never into that craze, even though you do see amazing results.  Particularly, after the birth of my son, David, in 2014, I needed to find workouts that didn’t tax my back. That’s when I discovered Fluidity, a barre/pilates-inspired workout that uses your own body weight to delicately sculpt and tone the body, while also helping improve pelvic floor muscles and improve core strength. If you live in NY and LA, you can find Fluidiy classes in a gym. I actually have the Fluidity system at home, and I’ve never owned any exercise machine. You’ll also want to invest in a great foam roller. It’s a pre and post exercise essential, to loosen up muscles, prevent injuries, as well as sooth the body at the end of a long day of hustling kids, work, home and all. Wellness Trends #2 – Collagen Boosting Suppliments

This one is kind-of funny. I’ve actually be on-trend, with collagen, my whole life, thanks to my grandmother!

Every time grandma nudged me to eat bone-broth (in Russian we call is boulon) because it would cure everything, she was right! Bone broth is a natural, age-old, proven way to increase your intake of collagen.

Wellness Trends #3 – Crystals and Chakras

Ya, so this one is new for me. I’ve gotten into essential oils, chakra meditations (thank you YouTube) and, yes, even crystal power.

Here’s how I look at it – if something makes you happy, and it’s not causing harm to your or anyone else, why not do it!?

That’s why I’ve placed Rose Quartz, the stone of self-love (selected at Well+Good’s Wellness Trends event from Luke Simon of La Vie En Rainbow)  near my bandstand, purchased numerous stone bracelets that speak to me (and then I google the meaning, to much delight — I always pick what I’m seeking/praying for) and try to do a Chakra mediation every so often.

The Gift of Sleep, a Mom Essential: Sleep Comfort Month

Hey Mamas,

I hope you had a blessed, joyful holiday weekend.

Okay, I actually hope you got lots and lots of sleep. Really! Isn’t that what we all want? Just a small spot (pillow optional) to curl up and drool for a few hours.

With the holiday hustle-and-bustle upon us, does anyone find it odd that November is National Sleep Comfort Month?

Forget about comfort, how about just lobbying for National Mom Will Sleep Anywhere Anyway Month? (PS I’m so going to try and make that official, some day.)

Day-care holiday parties, Thanksgiving decorating, charity fundraising, corporate gatherings, gift shopping, fa la la la la la la la la ….

But, seriously, quality sleep is a luxury me and most moms could not put a price tag on. And, it’s something we need to try and prioritize.
TRUTH – I’m sitting at Le Pain Quotidien on Lexington Avenue and 64th Street, at 3pm on Monday barley keeping my eyelids open, as I draft this post. This has become my permanent state.

Which is why I’m committing myself to focusing on sleep.

Oxygen. Food. Sleep.

Here are a few tips I’m trying to incarnate into my life, in order to improve my sleep routine. I hope they resonate with you, as well.

1. Learn to Say NO

There are only so many hours in the day, and 9pm-12am is not the time to work on an arts-and-crafts project for your son’s class. (Guilty – but I’m trying to change). It’s okay to say no to someone or something else, and say yes to you time, sleep time.
Don’t volunteer for every cause. If you pass out while gathering canned soup, you’ll be of no use to the charity you’re supporting, or your own family. Don’t agree to bake a cake for your kid’s holiday party – buy it! Don’t feel the need to accept every holiday invitation. Your friends will understand. And, they would much rather you focus on the dark circle under your eyes. Seriously, they told me so.

2. Learn to Let Go

Your kids will be fine if you go on vacation, mini vacation, or frequent date nights. They will live if someone else tucks them into bed. You are a kickass mom. But, if you are running low on fuel, you will burn out and be a miserable Grinch. Don’t be a Grinch.
Get yourself to a bed – even if it means you sleep at your mother-in-law’s house during the day, while a babysitter comes and watches the kids for a few hours. YES, I’ve done that. I’ve actually called a babysitter to come and watch my kids while I “go to work”. Work meant sleep … one block down … at my in-law’s house… at 2pm. #ChooseSleep

3. Go to Your Bedroom

Going to your bedroom doesn’t mean you have to go to sleep. But, commit to being in your sleep space by a reasonable hour. I’ve trained my kids to be in bed by 8pm. Now, I’m aiming to train myself to be in the bedroom by 10pm. This can be journal time, reading time, meditation time, bath time, whatever time. #MeaningfulMeMoments

Spa Week $50 Treatments are Back, Moms Rejoice & Rejuvenate

It’s Sunday. And …

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Spa Week!!!!!

You didn’t actually think I would say holiday shopping? It’s WAY too soon to think about that, so stop stressing me out.

Whenever I’m near my hubby’s office in midtown, I try to get a foot therapy massage at Sheva Spa NY. Outside the spa doors, it’s the business buzz of one of Manhattan’s most frantic, dollar-driven neighborhoods, inside it’s a zen-zone of purple and orange flowers, gilded deities and all-you-can-drink Thai tea.

I never cared about foot massages until I became a mom. Mom is the most on-your-feet job I’ve ever had, more demanding and damaging (physically …. and mentally) than anything I could have imagined.

So, I indulge. I indulge whenever, wherever.

I create Meaningful Me Moments at home (hello kid-free bedroom with candles), in the bathroom (because locking the door and putting on Brazilian bum bum cream while munchkins are screaming outside counts!!) in the car (yes, I’ve been know to stay in the car longer than needed while my mom or nanny are with the kids, so I can listen to music, or just listen to my brain go numb … like you haven’t don’t that?) and, at the spa (by far, the best option).

Like I always say, I’m no good to anyone else, if I’m not at my best. And, I’m not at my best, if I’m not taking some time outs.

My good friend, Latham Thomas, whom I recently profiles in my momBOSS series (more inspirational moms coming soon, promise) says, “You need to mother yourself first.”

I should stress (pun intended)  that I’m working from home, with two sick kids and a segment taping coming up tomorrow morning! Antioxidants. We need them. Everyone – doctors, beauty bloggers, magazine headlines – praise the beauty benefits of antioxidants. But, like many of you, I still didn’t know what this magical ingredient really was and how it worked.

So, I spent some time in the beginning of the summer breaking down this beauty buzz word, so that I could better understand what the products I love actually do inside my body, as well as be able to share that valuable information with all you busy mamas.

Guess what? We do need antioxidants. Antioxidants are awesome!!

Okay, so what are the beauty benefits of antioxidants and how can they help our skin look sexy AND protect us from the sun?

Antioxidants are like warriors that load your cells up with the necessary “weapons” to fight free radicals, which try to damage cells.
• They neutralize and remove free radicals
• They occur naturally in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea, wine, and chocolate
• There are many different types of Antioxidants that support/ prevent or stop cell damage. Example: flavanols (found in chocolate), resveratrol (found in wine), and lycopene (found in tomatoes)

What are Free Radicals? (booo, losers!! )
Free Radicals cause oxidation, think of it as rusting, which cause cell damage.

Costco’s Kirkland brand Green Tea is actually an amazing option, not to mention bang for buck. I’m also starting to make drinks using Vital Protein Collagen Beauty Greens and matcha, so I hope to share that soon. Bonus: Green tea also speeds up your metabolism.

Okay mamas, this one isn’t going to be for us on a regular basis. DIY masks and motherhood aren’t so easy to manage, but it’s worth mentioning as an option for your next #MeaningfulMeMoments night.

My love for avocados is huge – HUGE. I put them on sandwiches, in salads, blend with basil leaves to make dressing, mix with cheese, dice into salsa, eat alone. So, putting this mushy goodness on my face makes perfect sense, especially when taking into account that avocados are loaded with beauty benefits of antioxidant. Enjoy!

Antioxidant-Packed Avocado-Spirulina Face Mask 

This recipe is from MindBodyGreen. If you don’t know this site, you should. It’s full of healthy, happy goodness for all corners of your life.
Ingredients
• 1 large avocado
• 1/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
• 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder
• 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil
Preparation
In a bowl, mash the avocado with a fork. Add apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, spirulina and olive oil and mix well.
Apply half the mixture to your face for about 5 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water. Splash face with cold water.
Grab some antioxidant-rich carrots and dip into the remaining mixture. Pair with a good book (if your mind can still function after a long day in mommyhood). My current reading suggestions: Sh*tty Mom For All Season and America’s First Daughter.

Summer Beauty Ingredients Inspired by BBQ & Beach, on Great Day Washington, Plus How I Almost Missed My Shoot #MommyHood

What a week! How is it only Wednesday afternoon? For those of you who don’t live in DC, below is my “Summer Beauty Inspired by BBQs and the Beach” segment, featured on Great Day Washington wusa9, yesterday. Thank you to my girl Meaghan Mooney for rocking it out with me, once again.

Before I go ahead and share all the retail credit (I hate when shows don’t actually tell you where you can buy items … That’s why I post it on this blog), allow me to vent about the past 72-hours in mommyhood.

Saturday Morning – Ilana, my 3-year-old has been on antibiotics for three days. Strep isn’t contagious anymore. It’s okay to play/interact with David, my 2-year-old. The heatwave is keeping all of us indoors. Family bonding and fun.

Saturday Afternoon – everyone is napping. I usually get anywhere from 2-3.5hrs to do my own thing. “my own thing” could be laundry, sleep, shower, prepping for segments, planning the kids week ahead, blogging, etc. Time is cut short when David wakes up with a deep wheezing cough. Right away, my husband and I know David has croup. Been there, heard that. Text doctor. Calm David. Open fridge doors and sit next to cold air with him.

Saturday Wraps Up – David is being nebulized with Meds to help open his airways. We now have these on hand. Doctor has approved. Does he have strep? Tomorrow it’s another office visit. Meanwhile, what about my trip to DC? Shoot!!

Sunday Morning – Ilana is with my in-laws, while hubby and I take David to Brooklyn where our Pediatrician practices on weekends. Okay, no strep, just croup. Keep nebulizing.

Sunday Afternoon – I can’t cancel on “Great Day Washington”. I did that last month when I rushed a very dehydrated, stomach-aching Ilana to the hospital. Who’s going to book me? Why bother working even a little?

Sunday Evening – okay maybe mom can help. Nope not the whole time. Nanny, but not all Monday and Tuesday and plus it’s two sick kids. Nobody can handle that but mommy! But I need to go.

Monday Morning – still haven’t canceled. Gotta cancel.

Monday (late) Morning – a combo of mom, in-laws, nanny, cleaning lady (my daughter loves her!!) and hubby make my 30-hour business trip possible. This was a close one.

Monday 1 hour later – I’m heading to the airport!!

THAT’s mom life. It’s a crazy, cooky existence. But, I truly appreciate every insane moment. When you see me on TV talking about time savers, products that help me (try to) keep it together, I’m speaking from my heart. To be a (semi) decent mamager, you have to be flexible and know that the plan doesn’t always go according to plan!

  • Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner ($5.79) Due to FedEx errors, these products didn’t actually make it into my segment, which is a shame because I’m such a fan of this sulfate-free shampoo. The Seaweed Extract and naturally derived cleansers help rebalance hair’s  moisture levels, so we’re not dryied out and lack-luster.

WATER

You know drinking 6-8 glasses of water keeps your body hydrated, but did you know the ingredient is just as important in keeping your skin healthy? It’s all about 24/7 hydration perfection.

  • BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation ($44) The 32% water composition of this liquid foundation makes it super lightweight and easy to apply. It’s also free of parabens, sulfates and phthalates.

The serum helps diminish appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid ( you know, that cool stuff young kind produces in abundance making it look plump!!).  Use HA5 twice daily, once in the morning and once at night.
