Fountain of Youth Fruits: Beauty Benefits of Apples, Pomegranates & Pumpkins

Hey Mamas!

I was planning to post this on Friday – actually I should have posted it the previous Friday, but sick kids, my gut issues, charity work on behalf of the Vasculitis Foundation, life …. Sorry! One of these days, I might get my whole act together.

For now, let’s talk apples.

We’ve all heard the adage: An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

But, an apple a day may also keep the plastic surgeon away.

pamela pekerman pix11 morning news

Yup, apples, as well as two of fall’s other fruit harvests – pumpkins and pomegranates – have amazing beauty benefits.

Some of you may have caught me discussing this food to face topic on PIX11 Morning News, last Tuesday, with my dear friend, and mentor, Sukanya Krishna. (Side bar: I LOVE this woman. She’s a momBOSS, girl’s girl and killer anchor).

If you didn’t get a chance to catch the segment – Fall’s Fountain of Youth Fruits – check out the clip below.

I got quite a few emails and social media pings about the items on the table, so here’s some more scoop about the skincare and beauty finds, as well.

APPLES

Benefits of Eating Apples

  • Ursolic acid, found in the peal, is linked to lower risk of obesity because it boosts calorie burn and increases muscle
  • There are 4gp of fiber per one medium size apple. Fiber will keep you fuller longer, so you’re hopefully less likely to much on unhealthy snacks.
  • Fiber also improves your digestive system and increases metabolism. If you’ve been following my gut health drama on Instastories, you know I’m all about good gut health.

Nutritious Nibble featuring Apples

  • An apple bar is a fun way to get the whole eating the fruit. Slice up (with the skin on – because apple skin has the majority of the vitamins, fiber and other benefits) and put on the table with various sides like almond butter, peanut butter, Nutella, honey.
  • At my house, we’re big on baking apples. Wash, decorate with cranberries if desired and pop into the oven at 375degrees for approximately 45minutes. Baked apples with their skin on, retain more of their nutritional value, as compared to making apple sauce.

Beauty Benefits of Apples

Juice Beauty, which has Gwyneth Paltrow as their creative director, have an amazing green apple collection that is formulated without parabens, petroleum, propylene or butylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulfates, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances (yup eco excellence). The apples are even sourced from organic farms. On PIX11 I spotlighted the Green Apple Firming Body Moisturizer $18.

  • brightening malic acid from organic green apples combined with other ingredients for lux lotion that helps with skin glow
  • essential fatty acids and apple’s Vitamin C nourish and help firm skin from head to toe
  • No parabens, petroleum, pesticides, phthalates, artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances

PUMPKIN

Benefits of Eating Pumpkins

  • Pumpkins are loaded with Vitamin A, which helps with vision.
  • In the mood for less Wrinkles? Pumpkins are loaded with the antioxidant beta-carotene which helps fight UV damage.
  • Vitamin C found in pumpkins is a natural immune booster that may help during cold/flu season

Nutritious Nibbles featuring Pumpkins

Beauty Benefits of Pumpkins

PCA SKIN has a great pumpkin wine-based toner. Yup, you can make wine from anything. Who knew! The Nutrient Toner is $35.

  • pumpkin wine produced by fermenting whole pumpkin, which releases the nutritional benefits of pumpkin, including vitamin A and vitamin C
  • Best of all, this product is free of synthetic dyes and fragrances

POMEGRANATE

Benefits of Eating Pomegranates

  • Pomegranates protect against heart disease and cancer, due to antioxidants like flavonoids and polyphenols
  • They Contain a natural inhibitor that inhibits production of estrogen, which can reduce breast cancer risk
  • Blood pressure-reducing properties, thanks to phytochemicals in pomegranate

I’m so passionate about finding cleaner, green beauty and lifestyle products. So, if you have a brand or product you love – skincare, cosmetics, cleaning agents, baby/kid items, whatever – leave a comment below. Let’s detoxify together. #CleanerGeenerLife

NOTE above medical/health claims: I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on f TV. All benefits are those I’ve heard from medical experts, research online and via interviews, and/or found in recent studies. If you have concerns about eating something or the effects of a certain product/ingredient on your skin, please call your REAL doctor.

Also, the food brands listed above and featured in my segment are not endorsing any of the benefits claims I’m mentioning, unless stated otherwise. Because, like me, they are not fans of law suits.

Okay, that’s all. Just gotta get that out. Like I said, I’m not a fan of law suits. Stress is just toxic for your skin.

Until next time, here’s hoping you #AlwaysBeYourBestYou.

Spa Week $50 Treatments are Back, Moms Rejoice & Rejuvenate

Hey Mamas.

It’s Sunday. And …

It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Spa Week!!!!!

spaweek_sheva_spa_2

You didn’t actually think I would say holiday shopping? It’s WAY too soon to think about that, so stop stressing me out.

In fact, stop stressing yourself out, and indulge in Spa Week $50 treatments during the week of October 17 – 23, 2016.

It’s still not too late to save money on a luxurious facial (try a diamond facial, it will glow you up and remind your skin what it’s like to look like you actually get enough sleep), or a foot massage (because mama’s feet scream at the end of the day.)

Whenever I’m near my hubby’s office in midtown, I try to get a foot therapy massage at Sheva Spa NY. Outside the spa doors, it’s the business buzz of one of Manhattan’s most frantic, dollar-driven neighborhoods, inside it’s a zen-zone of purple and orange flowers, gilded deities and all-you-can-drink Thai tea.

spaweek_sheva_spa_3

spaweek_sheva_spa_ny_1

I never cared about foot massages until I became a mom. Mom is the most on-your-feet job I’ve ever had, more demanding and damaging (physically …. and mentally) than anything I could have imagined.

So, I indulge. I indulge whenever, wherever.

I create Meaningful Me Moments at home (hello kid-free bedroom with candles), in the bathroom (because locking the door and putting on Brazilian bum bum cream while munchkins are screaming outside counts!!) in the car (yes, I’ve been know to stay in the car longer than needed while my mom or nanny are with the kids, so I can listen to music, or just listen to my brain go numb … like you haven’t don’t that?) and, at the spa (by far, the best option).

Like I always say, I’m no good to anyone else, if I’m not at my best. And, I’m not at my best, if I’m not taking some time outs.

My good friend, Latham Thomas, whom I recently profiles in my momBOSS series (more inspirational moms coming soon, promise) says, “You need to mother yourself first.”

So, if you’re looking for your next mommy-time-out that’s actually away from the house, check out SpaWeek.com. And, while you’re there, check out my latest articles for SpaWeek’s blog, where I discuss why it’s so important to make time for yourself.

There are tons of high-end spas and medi-spas participating in Spa Week October 2016, all across the country. So, moms everywhere can rejoice and book up.

Share your #MeaningfulMeMoments spa experience with me @PamelaPekerman on Instagram, and let me know how taking time out makes you feel better about yourself, makes you more productive and even makes you a better mom.

8 Ways to Pamper Yourself at Home, on Great Day Washington

Ya, so it’s National Relaxation Day …

I should stress (pun intended)  that I’m working from home, with two sick kids and a segment taping coming up tomorrow morning! Oh, and the magical 4-day, family-and-friends weekend the hubby and I planned never happened … because someone, then two someones had near 103 fevers. Yup, that’s #momlife #circuslife.

But, today is National Relaxation Day and I am going to take a nap, just as soon as this post goes live. Praying it’s 3:30pm.

Cue zen music.

Cue silk mask over eyes.

Cue ear plugs and sound-reducing headphones.

Cue grandma coming in to save the day.

Pamper Yourself at home Pamela Pekerman

(UPDATE: this post went live at 5:45pm because my daughter refused to get out of bed with my mom. Then, my mom decided to tell me about it, at which point my daughter realized I was home … #MadatMyMom … #FeelingGuiltyAboutThatEmotion. Nap time might happen 6-7pm)

On my last trip to DC, I taped a fun pampering segment, which ran today. I hope it inspires you mamas to take some time for yourselves. I know how hard it is to put yourself on the to-do list, but it’s extremely important for your well being.

Call mom. Call the next door teenager. Take a nap. Lock the door and do a little yoga or a self mani appointment. But, first, watch my Great Day Washington segment on wUSA9. XO.

Beauty Benefits Antioxidants #BeautyBehindtheBuzz

Beauty Benefits of Antioxidants: 4 Ways to Keep Your Skin Youthful and Sun Safe with Antioxidants #BeautyBehindtheBuzz

Antioxidants. We need them. Everyone – doctors, beauty bloggers, magazine headlines – praise the beauty benefits of antioxidants. But, like many of you, I still didn’t know what this magical ingredient really was and how it worked.

So, I spent some time in the beginning of the summer breaking down this beauty buzz word, so that I could better understand what the products I love actually do inside my body, as well as be able to share that valuable information with all you busy mamas.

Guess what? We do need antioxidants. Antioxidants are awesome!!

Okay, so what are the beauty benefits of antioxidants and how can they help our skin look sexy AND protect us from the sun?

Antioxidants are like warriors that load your cells up with the necessary “weapons” to fight free radicals, which try to damage cells.
• They neutralize and remove free radicals
• They occur naturally in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, coffee, tea, wine, and chocolate
• There are many different types of Antioxidants that support/ prevent or stop cell damage. Example: flavanols (found in chocolate), resveratrol (found in wine), and lycopene (found in tomatoes)

What are Free Radicals? (booo, losers!! )
Free Radicals cause oxidation, think of it as rusting, which cause cell damage.
• They are found in the environment, as well as produced naturally in your body
• Skin reacts to free radical damage by generating an immune response-inflammation (that’s what we see as a sunburn)
• Left unchallenged, free radicals can cause other illnesses and chronic diseases
• They are a primary contributor for sunburns, premature aging of the skin, photo damage, and skin cancers

So, now that we understand the beauty benefits of antioxidants – my skincare superhero ingredient – here are four ways to get it into your body.

1) Beauty Benefits of Antioxidants in Your SPF Lotion

Beauty Benefits Antioxidant SPF

Your sunscreen has broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, but what about protection from infrared radiation (IR-A)? IR-A penetrates deeper than UVA/UVB rays and cause the development of free radicals in your skin. Eek. Where are my antioxidant fighters?

SkinMedica TOTAL DEFENSE + REPAIR ($68) has broad spectrum sun protection, plus it features an antioxidant complex including Dunaliella salina (micro algae) and Polygonum avicular (knotgrass). Overall it’s helping supports your skin’s ability to restore itself, correct signs of photodamage and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles that the sun likes to give us.

Other antioxidant-infused SPF lotions to try: Boscia Self-Defense Vital Antioxidant Moisture SPF 30 ($36) ;  Supergoop! Antioxidant-Infused Sunscreen Mist with Vitamin C SPF 50 ($13)

2) Beauty Benefits of Antioxidants on Their Own

Beauty Benefits Antioxidant Oil

Avalon Organics Intense Defense Antioxidant Oil ($19.99)
I’ve been using this vitamin C-packed oil all summer long.  Also, this product just makes me glow and feel amazing. Other, more tangable benefits you’ll enjoy are a natural lipid barrier to retain moisture and defend skin from UV rays and pollution create free radicals. No GMOs. Vegan. Biodegradable.

Other antioxidant oils to try: Mad Hippie Antioxidant Facial Oil ($24.99)

3) Beauty Benefits of Antioxidants in Your Food

Beauty Benefits Antioxidant Rich Food

Whether you live in Miami and get to hit the beach nearly all year long, or you’re here, with me, in New York, and have six more weeks before it’s time to start adding on layers, sun exposure lingers inside your body causing those pesky free radicals to run wild. Eating an antioxidant-rich diet is a great way to keep your skin looking youthful, as well as supporting a healthy immune system.
Here are my top 5 Antioxidant Essentials
• Green Tea – The trick is to find a really good, deep green color tea (ideally one with some matcha powder) which has a higher catechin content. Catechins protect skin from UV damage. Costco’s Kirkland brand Green Tea is actually an amazing option, not to mention bang for buck. I’m also starting to make drinks using Vital Protein Collagen Beauty Greens and matcha, so I hope to share that soon. Bonus: Green tea also speeds up your metabolism.
• Wild Salmon – Fishy and fabulous. I love fish, so this pink guy, which is a fabulous source carotenoid antioxidants that help repair damage from UV rays and support glowing skin, is a staple in my diet. Plus the omega-3 fats inhibit inflammation from UVB rays by up to 52%.
For dinner inspiration, check out my friend Candice Kumai’s recipe for Chipotle Salmon Burger. Yummy!
• Watermelon – rich in lycopene, which protects your skin from sunburns and possibility the developing of skin cancer
• Olive Oil – Toss your salad dressing aside, and toss your veggies in simple evoo. This antioxidant-rich oil not only fights sun damage, but, when consumed regularly, can help to reduce reddening from sun exposure. Hmm, my Greek g-ddess friends must be on to something
• Dark Chocolate – Ahh, something for my sweet tooth. Flavanoids found in dark chocolate (my husband rejoices are he feels no other chocolate is actually chocolate) may improve your skin’s ability to fight sunburns, plus they keep skin hydrated, and boost blood flow, which all help to keep skin looking resilient against the ticking clock.

4) Beauty Benefits of Antioxidants on Your Face – DIY Mask

DIY Antioxidant Avocado Face Mask

Okay mamas, this one isn’t going to be for us on a regular basis. DIY masks and motherhood aren’t so easy to manage, but it’s worth mentioning as an option for your next #MeaningfulMeMoments night.

My love for avocados is huge – HUGE. I put them on sandwiches, in salads, blend with basil leaves to make dressing, mix with cheese, dice into salsa, eat alone. So, putting this mushy goodness on my face makes perfect sense, especially when taking into account that avocados are loaded with beauty benefits of antioxidant. Enjoy!

Antioxidant-Packed Avocado-Spirulina Face Mask

This recipe is from MindBodyGreen. If you don’t know this site, you should. It’s full of healthy, happy goodness for all corners of your life.
Ingredients
• 1 large avocado
• 1/4 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar
• 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
• 1 teaspoon of spirulina powder
• 1 teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil
Preparation
In a bowl, mash the avocado with a fork. Add apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, spirulina and olive oil and mix well.
Apply half the mixture to your face for about 5 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water. Splash face with cold water.
Grab some antioxidant-rich carrots and dip into the remaining mixture. Pair with a good book (if your mind can still function after a long day in mommyhood). My current reading suggestions: Sh*tty Mom For All Season and America’s First Daughter.

Summer Beauty Inspired by BBQ and Beach

Summer Beauty Ingredients Inspired by BBQ & Beach, on Great Day Washington, Plus How I Almost Missed My Shoot #MommyHood

What a week! How is it only Wednesday afternoon? For those of you who don’t live in DC, below is my “Summer Beauty Inspired by BBQs and the Beach” segment, featured on Great Day Washington wusa9, yesterday. Thank you to my girl Meaghan Mooney for rocking it out with me, once again.

Summer Beauty Great Day Washington Pamela Pekerman Meaghan Mooney

Before I go ahead and share all the retail credit (I hate when shows don’t actually tell you where you can buy items … That’s why I post it on this blog), allow me to vent about the past 72-hours in mommyhood.

Saturday Morning – Ilana, my 3-year-old has been on antibiotics for three days. Strep isn’t contagious anymore. It’s okay to play/interact with David, my 2-year-old. The heatwave is keeping all of us indoors. Family bonding and fun.

Ilana_July_2016

Saturday Afternoon – everyone is napping. I usually get anywhere from 2-3.5hrs to do my own thing. “my own thing” could be laundry, sleep, shower, prepping for segments, planning the kids week ahead, blogging, etc. Time is cut short when David wakes up with a deep wheezing cough. Right away, my husband and I know David has croup. Been there, heard that. Text doctor. Calm David. Open fridge doors and sit next to cold air with him.

Saturday Wraps Up – David is being nebulized with Meds to help open his airways. We now have these on hand. Doctor has approved. Does he have strep? Tomorrow it’s another office visit. Meanwhile, what about my trip to DC? Shoot!!

Sunday Morning – Ilana is with my in-laws, while hubby and I take David to Brooklyn where our Pediatrician practices on weekends. Okay, no strep, just croup. Keep nebulizing.

Sunday Afternoon – I can’t cancel on “Great Day Washington”. I did that last month when I rushed a very dehydrated, stomach-aching Ilana to the hospital. Who’s going to book me? Why bother working even a little?

David_July_2016

Sunday Evening – okay maybe mom can help. Nope not the whole time. Nanny, but not all Monday and Tuesday and plus it’s two sick kids. Nobody can handle that but mommy! But I need to go.

Monday Morning – still haven’t canceled. Gotta cancel.

Monday (late) Morning – a combo of mom, in-laws, nanny, cleaning lady (my daughter loves her!!) and hubby make my 30-hour business trip possible. This was a close one.

Monday 1 hour later – I’m heading to the airport!!

THAT’s mom life. It’s a crazy, cooky existence. But, I truly appreciate every insane moment. When you see me on TV talking about time savers, products that help me (try to) keep it together, I’m speaking from my heart. To be a (semi) decent mamager, you have to be flexible and know that the plan doesn’t always go according to plan!

Now, where’s my moisturizer, silk sleep mask and Rose?

CHARCOAL

Activate charcoal is a clear winner for adsorbing oil and debris from pores on our face and body, making it the must try beauty ingredient of the moment. I’ve already raved about this black magic wonder on PIX11 NY.

Summer Beauty Charcoal

  • HASK Charcoal with Citrus Oil Collection ($2.49-$5.99) A complete line that features a Shampoo ($5.99), Conditioner ($5.99), and Deep Conditioner ($2.49) that are formulated to give you a deep clean and bring hair back to life. Charcoal, a hero ingredient derived from coconut shells in the Philippines, acts as a magnet and attracts and removes impurities – like product build-up from all the anti-frizz us East-Coast gals are using during list latest heat wave – so you are left with hair that is full of body and shine.
  • First Aid Beauty Cleansing Body Polish with Active Charcoal ($28) This multi-tasking treatment cleanses, exfoliates and smooths to banish bumps and reduce flaky skin. The clay-based paste turns into a foaming scrub when blended with water, making it an ideal prep step for flawless self-tanner application.

SEAWEED

If you love the Vitamin C, iron and calcium boost you get from your seaweed salad, you’ll want the superior hydration as well as anti-aging and anti-inflammatory benefits it gives as a hero beauty ingredient.

Summer Beauty Seaweed

  • The Body Shop Seaweed Clarifying Toner ($15) Don’t skin on toner, like many gals do. This alcohol-free toner,  refreshes the skin, removing traces of makeup (ya you still see plenty of makeup even after a good cleanser) and bladderwack seaweed from Ireland leaves skin looking shine-free. looking skin.
  • Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner ($5.79) Due to FedEx errors, these products didn’t actually make it into my segment, which is a shame because I’m such a fan of this sulfate-free shampoo. The Seaweed Extract and naturally derived cleansers help rebalance hair’s  moisture levels, so we’re not dryied out and lack-luster.

WATER

You know drinking 6-8 glasses of water keeps your body hydrated, but did you know the ingredient is just as important in keeping your skin healthy? It’s all about 24/7 hydration perfection.

Summer Beauty Water

  • BECCA Aqua Luminous Perfecting Foundation ($44) The 32% water composition of this liquid foundation makes it super lightweight and easy to apply. It’s also free of parabens, sulfates and phthalates.
  • SkinMedica HA5 Rejuvenating Hydrator ($178) Your skin will want to drink this up! The serum helps diminish appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and supports the skin’s natural ability to replenish its own hyaluronic acid ( you know, that cool stuff young kind produces in abundance making it look plump!!).  Use HA5 twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. Apply it after toning, and treating your skin, right before you moisturize.

ALGAE

Summer Beauty Algae

They may be the bottom of the underwater food chain, but up here, algae are sitting reaching the top of the beauty world. The living plant organisms are the latest ocean ingredients making motion on land because they have many proteins, amino acids and minerals.  Think stimulating collagen and evening out the skin tone, for starters!

  • Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Lift and Firm Night Cream ($76) If you invest in one beauty item, it should be nighttime rejuvenation. This award-winning cream normalizes your levels with moisture-magnet lipids called ceramides that are made in abundance by young skin. Wake to skin that looks strengthened, younger-looking, smoothed, firmer, more lifted, and minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles thanks to key ingredients like algae extract.
  • Tata Harper Beautifying Face Oil ($48) You know I adore this company! This lightweight, fast-absorbing face oil hydrated skin surface, and creates a brighter and firmer appearance. The brown algae extract reduce the appearance of dullness and fatigue – ya, I’m talking to you new mom. You want this in your bathroom cabinet.

PS Shout out to my beloved David, who’s doing much better, and taking a nice nap, while mommy types away.

Sunglasses for Babies and Kids, Cute & Essential

I always thought babies in sunglasses were so cute. Heart-shaped frames for girls, and maybe a rockin’ aviator for boys.

But, when Ilana, my eldest, refused to wear her shades, I shrugged it off and went about my day, with her. Ilana was in a wide-rim hat and SPFed out. Sure, sometimes, okay, lots of times, the hat came off, but her skin was fully protected – always reapplied, never out between 11am and 4pm.

Mom of the Year Award … where are you?

8dfe1a08-937d-46c8-8ce0-24879acf476c

David sporting his cool, black Babiators.

In my recent sun-safety investigations, I’ve learned more about what the sun can do to our eyes – especially the eyes of our little munchkins.

Kid’s eyes are more susceptible to irreversible damage from UV rays, as compared to adults. While kids receive three times more UV exposure than adults annually, more than 30% of parents say their kids rarely or never wear shades, this according to Babiators, a leading children’s sunglasses brand.

With new facts, I tried to reintroduce Ilana and David to sunglasses.

Two years wiser (yup we just hit the bit 2 mark!), David loves his black aviators from Babiators. He actually requests them when we go outside.

What I like about this brand is that the sunglasses are Polarized, meaning they have an anti-glare lens coating that help babies and kids see more clearly when they’re playing near water, or any reflective surface. They are also extremely durable – trust me, David has does extensive testing! Of course, they features 100% UVA and UVB protection.

Now, as for sunshine contestant number two, aka Ilana, she’s still a hard sell on wearing sunglasses. I’m hoping that by stressing she will be like mommy, i.e. wearing sunglasses like mommy, she’ll see it’s a cool thing to do.

Sarah_Jessica_Parker_sunglasses_kids

Sarah Jessica Parker’s daughter sports sunglasses (Babiators, actually) just like mommy!

Kids, especially toddlers, LOVE to mimic their mommies. When you step out the door and slip on your shades, they will see it as a necessary habit, much like washing hands after the bathroom. – You do do that, right?

FRIDAY FIVE FINDS: Celebrating National Rose Month – Rosé Anyone?

Hey Mamagers!

Happy Friday. We’ve managed our families from Monday through today, and we’ve managed to make it to the weekend with our sanity – well, most of it! With Saturday on the horizon, it looks like everything is coming up roses.

No, seriously, it’s all rosy and roses, with June being National Rose Month. Here’s a fun post I found about it on TheGardenDiary.com.

Cabbage_Roses_National_Rose_Month

Do you have a favorite rose? Mine is the Cabbage Rose.

To celebrate National Rose Month, I’m spotlighting five of my favorite rosy finds for mom, kids and home. I hope you love this romantic, elegant flower and scent just as much as I do.

FirdayFInds_National_Rose_Month_PiecesofPam

1. True Violet 2 In 1 Pencil Dress In Rose Floral Print $96 – If you’re like me and will never sport the crop top look, but like the idea of a layered crop over a high-waisted skirt, this dress is your summer-style solution. Wear this rose-print dress without worrying about things (you know what I’m talking about) popping out, or feeling out-of-bounds for your age. Sorry, but the rules do change as you get older, and some things – ie crop tops – should be left to the teenagers.

2. Le Grand Courtage  Brut Rose $25 – Fruity, fresh and super fun to drink alone, or serve to guests -mini bottles available and perfect for al-fresco parties-, this rose is my new go-to summer drink. (PS Be on the lookout for it to pop up in an upcoming Pamela+Vanessa #momsandwhine episode).

3. Naturopathica Rose Geranium Soothing Mist $28 – Ideal for keeping skin hydrated during the summer heat, I also keep this mist by my desk for a mid-day refresh. And, it was one of my lux labour bag essentials. Steve, my husband, misted me during delivery. It’s a fabulous touch to a not-always-so-fab process.

4. Schylling Children’s Tin Tea Set $19.95 My little girl loves to play tea. Actually, so does my son! They must get it from their mother. My tea obsession knows no bounds.

5. Diptyque Roses Candle $62  — This is great to burn when guests are coming. I’m a fan of burning candles in hallway bathrooms, used by guests.

Sun Safety Tips on Great Day Washington w Pamela Pekerman

After an initial cancellation due to … life … aka life as a mom …

Two kids with step, one that had croup, as well. And then, the other got a nasty stomach bug from daycare that landed her in the ER for a few hours … ya, That’s Life

I finally made it to Washington, DC to share my Sun Safety tips on Great Day Washington. Check out the clips below.

Washington DC tourist

DC was amazing, and I made sure to leave myself several extra hours to enjoy the city and savor some Meaningful Me Moments. Naturally, I was covered in my go-to mineral sunscreen with SFP 50 (yes, I follow my own sun safety tips #PracticeWhatYouPreach), as I strolled along the Tidal Basin, made my way through several sculpture gardens, and capped off near the Capital.

SkinMedica TOTAL DEFENSE + REPAIR ($68)

Traditional sunscreens may no longer offer us enough protection.  Research shows infrared radiation (IRA) could be causing more damage, as the rays penetrate deeper into the skin, causing premature aging, aka winkles, loss of skin elasticity and firmness. Total Defense, is the first and only rejuvenating “superscreen” that prevents the appearance of premature aging from chronic exposure to infrared rays (IR), thanks to a proprietary SOL-IR Advanced Antioxidant Complex, which counters the negative effect of the free radicals that IRA rays produce when then penetrate your skin. The lotion also provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection.

CosMedix Reflect ($47)

If you have sensitive skin, mineral sunscreen is the way to go because it doesn’t absorb into the skin. Mineral sunscreens create a physical barrier on top of your skin, an when UVA and UVB rays hit the skin then bounce/reflect off.  This spray is non-irritating, chemical-free, oil-free formula. Combining micronized titanium dioxide—nature’s own sunscreen—with two skin-specific antioxidants, Reflect provides lightweight UV protection. To learn more about mineral vs chemical click here.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Stick SPF 70 ($10.99)

Neutrogena’s #mimicmommy campaign is all about setting a good example… mom applies and then kids want to use th fun stick – or what I call “the crayon stick”!   Sunscreen sticks provide a fun application that kids will want to use on their own and mom can go in and assist in spots they missed.  The unique wide-faced stick that’s water and sweat resistant is ideal for both face and body… and no messy hands required!  It’s formulated with HELIOPLEX Technology, a breadth of stabilizing sunscreen technologies that deliver superior protection from UVA/UVB protection

ALMAY Smart Shade Skintone Matching Makeup SPF 15 ($13.99 )

I’m all about double-duty beauty so skin coverage that’s also giving me SPF protection, is ideal for busy mommy morning. Almay’s smart shade makeup adjusts to the natural tones and of your skin thanks to their Almay tonemimic shade-sensing bead technology which uses the skin tone enhancing benefits of synthetic melanin pigments to blend and adjust to the essential pigments of your unique skin tone for seamless, natural-looking coverage.  This is for daily use ie walking to work, a quick lunch break, not beach-bag, swim-time worthy.

 iS CLINICAL Hydra-Cool Serum ($90)

Formulated to rejuvenate, hydrate and soothe the skin, this penetrating serum combines superior antioxidants with essential botanicals and bionutrients, which helps relieve the sting of sunburn.  It provides intense, penetrating hydration as it cools, calms and soothes dry, irritated or damaged skin.  It also great for replenishing dehydrated skin due to air travel.

First Aid Beauty Slow Glow Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizer ($28)

Get that J-low glow without exposing your skin to harmful rays. First Aid Beauty’s Slow Glow Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizer is a completely odorless (eek have you smelled some of those other self tanners??), lightweight formula can be used on both face and body for an even, all-over glow that gradually deepens over three to four days with continued use. Complete with nourishing vitamins, emollients and antioxidants, the formula goes on effortlessly and doubles as a rich moisturizer to hydrate and condition, leaving skin silky soft with a beautiful bronze glow.

Lands’ End Women’s Swim Tee Rash Guard ($59)

If spending a lot of time at the pool or beach- you can now sport a fashionable “Swim Tee”- a stylish tee, provides maximum coverage you can swim in, plus blocks harmful UV rays with UPF 50 protection!  Designed to wear over your swimsuit top, it’s soft as your favorite tee and incredibly lightweight – even while wearing it in the water! It’s not just for swimming though. It also works as a colorful cover-up when the air turns cooler or you’re just looking to shade your skin.Sun_Safety_Tips_2_PiecesofPam

5 Sun Safety Tips for Kids and Babies #Don’tFryDay

Some mom’s at our local park think I’m crazy because when my munchkins were born (in April and late June, respectively), they didn’t get much sun until after they were 6-months old. It was head-to-toe coverage, an occasional cameo in the sun before 10am or after 5pm. That’s it.

Now that Ilana is 3-years-old and David is almost 2-years-old, rest assured the SPF Police still patrols the exit door.

No park, no sun after 11:30am. We come back after 4:30pm. And, that window will change as the weeks go by, and the sunshine rays gets stronger.

When we do go outside, it’s all about sun-fun, but safety first.

SPF – check. (My preference is a mineral lotion sunscreen with an SPF of 50).
Lip SPF – check.
Loose clothing – check.
Hats – check.
OK, now we can go have fun.

Dont-Fry-Day

The above proves once again, I am my mother’s daughter. She raised my sister and me to be cautious of the sun, and the health and beauty problems it could cause us in the future. Actually, did you know that just one blistering sunburn in childhood more than doubles a person’s chances of developing melanoma later in life? Thanks mom. My healthy (knock-on-wood) and youthful-looking skin in very grateful for your common-sense approach to sun-fun.

Before you head off into the sun (pun very much intended), here are 5 Sun Safety Tips for Kids and Babies. Happy Don’t Fry Day!

1. No sunscreen for babies under 6-months of age

Keep infants out of direct sunlight, as their fragile skin is thin and delicate. Once they turn 6-months-old, look for a sunscreen that is formulated specifically for their sensitive skin. Chris Birchby, Founder and CEO of COOLA, one of my favorite sunscreen brands, also suggests looking for “sunscreens that are hypoallergenic and fragrance free, and come in a form that is easy to apply on your child”

2. Lotion Sunscreen vs Spray Sunscreen

Lotions are ideal, especially for younger kids that are fidgety during application. You don’t want to spray into their month or eyes. Also, with a lotion you will likely have a more even distribution.

3. Grab a shot glass

Most parents don’t apply enough SPF on themselves, not to mention their children. As a visual aid, use the recommended shot-glass amount (for toddlers you can use 2/3 a shot glass). Reapply every 2-hours, or after excessive swimming, toweling and sweating. Note that water-resistant SPF’s are now labels with “40-minutes” or “80-minutes”, but if you’re kid wants to stay in the pool for 80-minutes, you need to use some common sense and pull them out once or twice for a rest and reapplication. It’s a good time to get them to sit in the shade for 10-minutes and eat a fruit.

4. Don’t let clouds fool you

Birchby recommends we, “Use sunscreen even if it is cloudy outside. Clouds don’t absorb all of the UV radiation that may harm your child. About 80% of UV rays are allowed through clouds.”

5. Mineral vs Chemical Sunscreens

a. Mineral (also called physical) sunscreens use minerals, namely Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, as their main active ingredients. These minerals form a physical barrier over the skin that reflect and scatter UVA and UVB rays. Because of this “bounce off” effect, mineral sunscreens are better for sensitive skin. Also, they are effective right after application – no wait time. However, they do slide off easier, so you will need to reapply more frequently after swimming, sweating, and toweling/
b. Chemical (also called classic) sunscreens use chemicals as their main active ingredients. These chemicals absorb and dissipate harmful UVA and UVB rays before they penetrate the skin. Chemical sunscreens need time to absorb into the skin and form a protective layer, so you must apply them 30-minutes before sun exposure. This is another reason why mom’s with antsy kids prefer mineral … can your toddlers wait 30-minutes before running to the pool on a hot summer day?

Dr. Julie E. Russak, a prestigious dermatologist in New York City (whom I have turned to for both my own and my kids skin concerns) says that, “The most important ingredient I want my patients to look for, no matter the age, is Zinc and Titanium, both physical blockers.” These are always found in mineral sunscreens, and in some chemical creams, as well. The fabulous Dr. Russak also helped to dispel a mineral sunscreen myth. “A common and dangerous misconception unprotected sun exposure is the best and only source for Vitamin D.  A much safer and effective way of getting the daily-required amount of Vitamin D, without putting yourself at risk for skin cancer is via your diet.  Foods rich in vitamin D, such as eggs, fish and some dairy products are a much better alternative.”

Best SPF for kids and babies

1. COOLA Mineral Baby Organic SPF 50 Unscented $36, 2. Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 $9, 3. Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen with Cellular Response Technology SPF 50 $10-$48, 4. Mustela SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen Stick $13

momBOSS Interview: Latham Thomas founder of Mama Glow

Pamela Pekerman:How would you describe yourself and what you do?
Latham Thomas:I’m a single mother with an 11-year-old son. I’m the founder of Mama Glow. I’m a maternity lifestyle maven, whose focus is to support women before, during and after pregnancy. I’m known as the celebrity doula, serving women everywhere as they journey into motherhood.

Mama_Glow_book

Pamela: MamaGlow – the website, the book, the brand – is so much to so many.
Latham: How would you describe the mission of MamaGlow?
Mama Glow is a holistic maternity lifestyle hub that offers nutrition, yoga, and birth doula services to women during pregnancy and beyond. We are all about celebrating this special time in a woman’s life and helping her look and feel radiant for those precious 9 month and beyond.

Pamela: At what point did you realize, “Wow, I’m onto something big!”?
Latham:When I was pregnant with my son I was looking for resources and realized they didn’t exist, so the entrepreneurial spirit within me led me to found Mama Glow. I realized when I started getting cold calls from celebrities and when Vogue asked me to partner on an event early on, that this birth business I was cultivating could be a big deal. I still consider it something that’s growing on people. Not everyone is ready to talk about birth.Latham_Thomas_momBOSS

Pamela: Who is the Mama Glow woman? How are you helping her Always Be Your Best You?
Latham: The Mama Glow client is a woman who is hip, savvy, trendy, fashionable and very conscious. She believes in the value of organics and limiting toxic exposures. She is educated and an active participant in her own well-being- she is also very driven and really benefits from the mindfulness area of our practice.

Pamela: What tips or daily rituals do you recommend for the mom who’s trying to find her passion and live her true path?
Latham: Writing down our goals and desires has a peculiar way of activating them in the world. It also gives the universe a clear indication that you are ready to take your thoughts, dreams and desires to the next level and spin them into action.  Start a Daily Gratitude & Desire journal practice. When you wake up each morning write down two columns: 1. What you are grateful for and be really specific here, and 2. what you desire- details are a must. When we call upon the universe to help send something into our orbit, we must be crystal clear on what we are asking for and be ready to receive.

Pamela: Do you have any tips for juggling personal, professional and family needs/obligations?
Latham: It’s a juggle. It’s not about balance, but about dynamic equilibrium and keeping the balls in the air and catching them when they come down. I believe in a strong self-care and self-reflective practice, whether that’s meditation, yoga, dance. Glow time is my self-care movement and it’s all about relaxation, whether you have 2 minutes or 2 hours.

Pamela: Yes, I’m all about Meaningful Me Moments.
Latham: Exactly. When you indulge yourself, you honor yourself. You’ll be a better mother and better business woman for it.

Pamela: Speaking of business, is there something you do with him after a long day at work/being away?
Latham:We share highlights from our days when we get home. We have a tickle-time ritual where I tickle him and make him laugh after a long day away. I make sure to do an activity he loves with him like puzzles, Monopoly, or a game of pool.

Pamela: Quick, you only have 2 minutes to prep and pamper your face. What are you top makeup/skin products?
Latham: Tata Harper skin care- Regenerating Face cleanser. Uma oils – wellness face oil to seal in moisture. Obsessive compulsive lip tar– it’s vegan, and I smudge some on the cheeks too. Boom! Done.

Pamela: What’s the coolest product for new moms, which you’ve recently uncovered?
Latham:Right now I am obsessed with Munchery Meal delivery service- It’s amazing. Moms get meals prepared fresh by chefs. It takes the guess work out of cooking and it’s a great price. You can order online.

Pamela: What’s next for you and Mama Glow?
Latham: Mama Glow is expanding into new territory. I’m launching a new platform based on rituals which I am excited about unveiling this summer. It’s all a blessing.
