Six 90s Fashion & Accessories You Actually Want to Wear

Hey mamas,

Last week, a pr firm sent me a fun package full of nostalgic candy from the 90’s, and Pretty Woman stick-on nails. It brought be back to the late 90’s when my mom let me purchase a pair of Sally Hansen stick-on nails in a light, French manicure print. I was fifteen and feeling fabulous.

Now, I’m thirty three and feeling even more fabulous. One reason could be the ridiculously wild, art-deco inspired stick-on nails I’m wearing! I wonder whatg the kids will think? I wonder what my husband will think?

I’m always looking for beauty short cuts, and it doesn’t get any easier than stick-on nails. Pretty Woman NYC has created really great options, and, as I type away, the sticky tape (I opted not to use the glue) is holding firm.

Each kit comes with 24 artificial nails, so you can find which size works for you. I have very tiny fingers and was still able to find the right fit, without having to file away sides.

Looking to channel your inner Brenda or Kelly?

If you don’t know my reference, I’ll assume this is your first round of 90’s fashion and beauty. Welcome, you’v been Saves by the Bell. Life is about to get gnarly and totally awesome.

If you do dig my meaning, here are some 90’s fashion and accessories you won’t mind wearing again.

Totally Acceptable 90s Fashion & Accessories

90s Fashion Short Shorts

Who wears short shorts? Well, mom can wear short shorts, if the kids aren’t round or the kids are just too young to realize mom is hot enough to wear short shorts. Check out H&M for tons of affordable options under $20! #SexyMama

90s Fashion Denim on Denim

I can’t say I ever loved this look, although photos I recently uncovered prove otherwise – see below. When wearing several denim clothing items, I like to go with different shades. Or, I’m all about a denim bottom and denim cap. This acid wash denim cap is from Bebe -another 90’s relic I used to love. #WhereTheCoolKidsShop

90s Accessories Chokers

Blame it on Bella and Gigi Hadid, thaqt chokers are back. I don’t love the ultra thin, velvet styles from the 90s. I do enjoy a multi-strand option like the one you can create with StyleSting. For luxury buffs, Chanel recently got in a slew of divine choker options. If you’re in NYC, go to Bergdorf Goodman and ask for Ilona. #AllChokedUp

90s Tech Polaroid Camera

Your go-to accessory for upcoming picnic season is going to be a Polaroid. If you kept your old one, great. If not, you can buy one at Target. #TheOriginalInstagram

90s Beauty Press-on Nails

Save time, just press and go with Pretty Woman Designer Nail Kit available in 90’s beloved all-black nails and the nude French mani. #NailedIt

90s Fashion Crop Tops

This is an acquired taste – kind of like some your friends’ spouses . I also think, much like short shorts, this is something I wouldn’t rock at the annual family BBQ. I would do it on a vaca with the hubs. The photographed crochet top was purchased in Cuba, by me, nearly 15 years ago. But you can find similar styles at BooHoo or Forever 21. #BecauseIHitTheGym

Travel Beauty Essentials: FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

Happy Friday. Happy sunshine.

Summer unofficially kicked off, this past Monday, with Memorial Day. And, that means it’s time for weekend getaways, lots of time in your car getting to picnic spots, camping grounds, museums, and more.

And while I probably should be telling you what I like to have in the car to keep the kids engaged, clean and fed, that will be next week. I’ve prioritized sharing my in-the-car, travel beauty essentials first.

How are you going to be happy in your mom mobile if you look or feel like a hot mess? #YouAreWelcome

Travel Beauty Essentials for Lips

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Lip TreatmentLove your lips as much as I do? You’ll want to keep them well conditioned for that next kiss. I always seem to get dry, especially when drinking around during the summer – hot outside, AC inside. Neutrogena nailed it with this hydrating lip treatment that splashes your pucker with hyaluronic acid. #LipLove

Travel Beauty Essentials for Health

Vital Proteins Collagen Beauty Water – Water is one of my biggest beauty essentials, but I like to kick it up a notch and pour in a packet of Vital Proteins Collagen Beauty Water powder. These compact, on-the-go packets have a mix of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and probiotics that help improve skin tone and elasticity, while also giving your water an organic, spa-like taste. Lavender lemon is my favorite, but they also have Melon Mint and Cucumber Aloe. #CollagenCraze

Together with Water.org, d.stil has already helped transform lives of over 400 people by providing access to safe water and sanitation. I hydrate myself and I help others hydrate and elevate their everyday lives. What I love about this brand is they don’t just donate, d.stil has partnered with Water.org from the get-go, to make the mission long-term and more than a pr blitz. I see plenty of those! We have so much power with every purchase. I urge you to choose to do good with your wallet. #HydrationWithPurpose

Travel Beauty Essentials for Hands

Travel Beauty Essentials for Stress

This Works Stress Check Breathe In – This roll-on is formulated with a 100% natural superblend of pure essential oils includes Eucalyptus, which helps combat physical and mental fatigue (much appreciated when I’m stuck in 2+ hours of traffic heading home from the Central Park Zoo!), frankincense which help fight infections and the always nerve-numbing lavender. Family Memorial Day Activities: Friday 5 Finds

Hey Mamas,

When I planned today’s post, the forecast for Memorial Day weekend, at least here in the Northeast, was rainy and cloudy.  I also didn’t expect David to have a 102 fever, this morning.

So, here I am at 2pm, trying to wrap up my blog post that doesn’t exactly match the new sunny-days forecast, while David naps (thanks to Motrin), and Ilana sits on my bed and colors. (UPDATE: I’m actually completing this at 5pm)

Without further ado – as my drawing buddy is getting a little antsy – here are Friday Five Finds that will keep the whole family entertained, even if you need to take the party inside.

Friday Finds Memorial Day Activities by Pamela Pekerman

Memorial Day Clean Games

Napkids – Napkin notes and napkin games are perfect for extra fun during Sunday picnics in the park, or make-be-leave picnics on you living room floor. #ingenious

Memorial Day Sweet Spot

chef’n Ice Cream Sandwich Maker – Sure you can’t go outside and chase the ice-cream truck? Do you care if mom is SO cool that she’s prepared all the simple – no seriously, it’s super simple – ingredients and tools needed to make your very own ice cream sandwich? Yup! #BestMomEver #chefntastic

Memorial Day ABC’s

ABC Museum Book – Toddlers love pictures. Toddlers love to sing. Toddlers love stickers. Mommy likes to show off smart toddlers. Mommy purchsed this book when first baby wasn’t even born. Now mommy loves that both kids actually like this ABC book and have some reference to iconic paintings and sculptures found at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I usually follow this up with an ABC sticker book or an ABC feed-the-monster activity#AlwaysBeClever #AllBooksrCool

Memorial Day Manicure

Mixify Polish – Tweens and younger teens will love Memorial Day Mani, especially if they can custom create their own nail polish. It’s art, it’s beauty, it’s spa, and it loads of fun even without the sun. #MommyandMeMani

Memorial Day Mommy Me Time

SkinForum – Long weekend are fun … and LONG. Even if you can’t get to a much-deserved spa appointment, pamper yourself at home with the 6-step Facial  In A Box. It includes cleaning, exfoliating, toning, hydrating, and nourishing lotions and potions, as well as a silver skin makeover mask that will leave your face shinier than grandma’s best silver tray. #MeaningfulMeMoments #GlowOn

Last Minute Mothers Day Gift Ideas Pamela Pekerman

5 Last Minute Mother’s Day Gift Ideas to Buy or DIY

Hey Mamas,

Our big day is almost here, which means our own mama’s big day is also almost here.

If you’re still thinking about what to gift the most important women (hello sis, mom, grandma, auntie) in your lives, here are five ideas that you can still buy/make in time for Sunday.

Five Last Minute Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

Glam Her Up

Glamsquad – Mama doesn’t always have time to get to the salon, so gift her a salon that comes to her door. I’ve been a loyal fan of Glamsquad ever since they launched, back in 2014, in NYC. Since then, they have expanded to Los Angeles, Miami and Washington, D.C.

Let mom sit back and relax as the Glamsquad team (FYI trained so well, I’ve never been disappointed by a stylist!!) does her hair, makeup and/or nails. Get her a gift card today and a promo code will arrive via email, which she can use on the Glamsquad app or phone.  Check out the site for Mother’s Day promos including 20% off 5 Blowouts, good though the end of August (getting mom through her busy summer social calendar in VIP style).

Tea Time in Style

Villeroy & Boch New Wave Caffeon at Gilt.com –  Obsessed with tea? Obsessed with beautiful mugs? Obsessed with all that and a great deal? Pick up this gorgeous collection, currently on sale at Gilt.com for $69 (normally $159). This set is part of my Pam’s Picks What Mom’s Really Want curation for Gilt.com.

Buy it today via expedited shipping and you’ll get the products in time to gift mom some elegant Meaning Me Moments.

If you live in NYC, check out Pam’s Picks on GiltCity.com, where you can gift mom a unique experience like a semi-private tour of Guggenheim Museum.

Rose All Day

Wildfox Mama Needs Rosé Long Sleeve PulloverYou know what I always say, “You can’t have a bad day, if you end with Rosé.” Now mama can proclaim her love for Rosé in a comfy, yet stylish shirt.

Spoiler alter for my sister: you’re getting one. Best part: I have a matching one, already! Side bar: my sister hates when we match. I love it! #SistersRule

Choose Next Business Day (if shopping today) or Saturday Delivery, at checkout.

Picture Day

When was the last time you printed out a photo? Head on over to CVS, or your desired pharmacy, and print out some pictures of you, mom and the kids. It’s a simple gesture, that’s beyond retro, these days.

Bonus points if you actually put the photo into a cute picture frame you’ve scored at HomeGoods or any store that’s near your home.

PS That’s me and my mom (@AskMalvina), last week, on a pre-Mother’s Day trip to Miami.

DIY Scrub

No time to hit the stores and no extra cash for expedited online shipping? Make mom a nice sugar scrub. Yup, even if you’re in your 30s, your mama will still appreciate that extra personal effort. I know I would like that from my kids, at any age.

Wellness Mama, my new guilty pleasure, has some simple Sugar Scrub recipes, that take no time to make. You’ll final all the ingredient are already in your kitchen cabinet.

Simple go to the dollar store and find a cute jar, natural ribbon and maybe a chalkboard or other pretty label. DIY and done.

Beauty Benefits Coconuts

Beauty Benefits of Coconuts: FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

Is anyone else crazy about coconuts? Have any of you mamas been wondering if all the beauty benefits of coconuts are just, well, nuts? And, does anyone else feel like it was a coconuts kind of week, maybe more coco-nuts than usual?

Yes, to all of the above; at least on my end.

On Monday night, my daughter, Ilana, started to look and act sick – you know that look kids get with glossy eyes, followed by an increased desire to be quiet and still. This was during the first night of Passover. We left our family’s seder early (aka 10pm) to get home and find out Ilana was running a 101.7 fever.

Naturally, Tuesday’s planned day of fun in Manhattan was canceled.

Ilana, I found out to my delight, had tonsillitis. So, while I scrambled to find someone to help with David so that he wasn’t near her, I also began to cancel the rest of my week – save for a PIX11 segment that was focusing on, ironically, “Spring Break Survival for Moms”.

So, now, I needed to survive.

Crafting with Toddlers Pamela Pekerman

Sleeping Sick Toddler Pamela Pekerman

Fortunately, my coconuts week only strengthened my mommy game, desire to be more present with the kids, gratitude for creating the flexibility to be all-in when needed, and reaffirmed my infinite love for all things coconuts.

HELLO!! Passover means no usual dessert need apply. And, I was home – all week – with a sick toddler. Let’s pop those coconut macaroons, mamas.

While those particularly coconuts might not be the healthiest or have any beauty benefits – okay, who am I kidding, coconut macaroons are saturated with saturated fat AND artificial flavor; there are, however, plenty of other coconut-infused products that are good for you inside and out.

Today’s Friday Five Finds focus on the beauty benefits of coconuts. From your kitchen cabinet to your beauty cabinet, you want to go coco-nuts over this amazing fruit!

Friday Five Finds: BEAUTY BENEFITS OF COCONUTS

Coconut Beauty Products

Kopari Coconut Melt – Use this Vitamin-E & fatty-acid packed, organic and unrefined coconut oil as a facial cleanser that doesn’t sting eyes!!, deep-conditioner for softer hair, belly-balm, even a baby skin soothing massage oil! #Multitasker

Simply Summer’s Eve Coconut Water Cleansing Cloths – Need an on-the-go refresher, something to keep at work or in your gym bag? Maybe just around the house for the days when a shower isn’t an option? These cloths are pH balanced to work with your body, while removing oder-causing bacterial. They are all free from harsh chemicals like parabens, dyes and alcohol. #TheMomShower

Dr Teal’s Coconut Oil Foaming Bath – Stress relief and smooth skin in one? Sign this mama up. This is one of the newest foaming bath options from Dr Teal’s, which has been a staple in my bathroom since I gave birth. The muscle soothing benefits of Epsom Salt are a clear winner. And with the smoothing beauty benefits of coconuts, I couldn’t ask for a better bath companion. #MamasStressSalvation

Farmacy Beauty New Dawn Coconut Gel Mask Medley – If a farmer and a scientist had a baby, it would be called Farmacy Beauty. As you know from my Instastories, this is my new beauty brand crush (and I honestly, don’t have that many – I’m loyal that way!) These masks are a post Sunday shower ritual, for me. Tune into my Instastories Sunday around 7/8pm to find out why they coco-nuts rock my world. #Mascaraed

Zico Coconut Water – There are dozens of coconut waters to try, but this one gets my Pam’s Picks approve for its taste and brand-with-heart goodness. Loaded with electrolytes, including more potassium than a banana and 15x the potassium of sports drinks (hello gym bag essential), Zico also supports the sustainable use of natural resources where Zico is produced and gives back 5% of its profits to these communities. #IWannaBeLikeAlba

8 Tips for Cleaner Greener Beauty Cabinet, Let’s Talk Live #TVsegment

Hey Mamas,

Spring time, at least for today, – hello sunshine and 60-degree weather – is upon us. This season always makes me want to organize and update my beauty cabinet.

Except now, I’m not just thinking about a new shade of lipstick or a bolder bronzer. My cleaner greener journey is growing, and I took the show on the road, literally, sharing my finds on Let’s Talk Live DC.

If you’ve been following this blog and my Instagram account, you know I’m constantly evaluating and questioning the cosmetics and body products that come across my desk. This segment is all about the little changes you can actually do, not a total revolt against all products that don’t adhere to the “free from” labels.

Who’s ready to for a Cleaner Greener Beauty Cabinet?

TIP 1 –Remember Expiration Dates

Take note of the small cylinder with lid icon, located on your cosmetics and skincare products. Inside the cylinder, there will be a number (6, 12, 18, 24) following by an M. So, “6 M” means you should stop using the product 6 months after initially opening it.

With the products that most women own, it’s espier to label your beauty items, then try and remember “When did I buy that mascara?”

I also like to color code my cosmetics, so that it’s not all black ink, and easier to sort in my beauty cabinet/drawer.

TIP 2 – Buy Nontoxic Lipstick

If you are looking to upgrade and make one nontoxic beauty change, my suggestion is lipstick. Why? Because it’s the most reapplied cosmetics idea AND we ingest the ingredients via licking lips, drinking and eating.

Make sure your popular go-to lipstick is 100% lead free. If you aren’t sure, based on their website and/or ingredient list, call the manufacture up.

Recent science indicates there is no safe level of lead exposure, even though the FDA allows small dosages. Lead is a neurotoxin and can be dangerous at small doses. Medical experts are clear that any level of lead exposure is unhealthy.

BRANDS TO TRY:

TIP 3 – Wash Face with Coconut Oil

From your kitchen to you beauty cabinet, coconut oil is a natural way to gently stick away makeup and environmental build up, on your face. It’s completely non toxic, effective, and leaves a glowy dew. Best of all, it doesn’t sting your eyes, like many common makeup removes/face wash.

TIP 4 – Skin-friendly Skincare

There are so many “free-from” skin brands on the market right now, that help improve firmness, tone and texture of skin, that you don’t need a chemically-laced option. You also don’t need to spend a fortune on the free-from options.

FARMACY is affordable, effective, and focused on naturally-derived ingredients that are free of parabens, artificial coloring and formaldehyde. The brands prized ingredient is a unique, natural antioxidant, that helps to protect your skin’s collagen (aka the glue that keeps it tight, bright and youthful!).

TIP 5 – Chemical Free Acne Care

Women tend to break out during the change of the season and thank-goodness there are always new solutions coming out to help with this pesky problem.

Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask is a chemical-free, UV free solution for acne, using the power of blue light (which fights blemishes) and red light (which combats irritation). Dermatologists have used similar products in their offices for over a decade, now you can too.

TIP 6 – Kill Cold Sores with Flowers

As someone who’s prone to getting cold sores, I’ve don’t it all, tried it all. The over-the-counter cold sore remedies are often very strong, but feel like they are burning my skin.

Aubio Cold Sore Treatment Gel worked on me in less than 3 days. It’s made with a botanical blend that stops the painful itching, sooths and clears up the cold sore. This gel is natural, safe, and non-allergenic.

TIP 7 – Smarter Nail Care Sorting

We’ve all fussed through our beauty cabinet, to find a rainbow mix of nail polishes that never stay up. Bins and ziplock bags take up lots of space and just don’t help.

Color clutch is an innovative storage solution for nail polish, that’s compact (2 inches thick) and stands upright like a book. The clear lid allows nail color to be viewer while sitting upright in the case. #WhyDidntIThinkofThis

TIP 8 – Natural Nails

Who can stand the smell of nail polish drying? Eeek!! I’ve gotten headaches from doing my own nails in the bathroom. Can you relate?

Try Zoya nail polish for a more natural way to take care of and color your nails. Zoya is Big5Free meaning the formula is free of Formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, formaldehyde resin, and camphor.

Hey preggos, it’s safe for pregnant women to use. #BumpBonus

Red Carpet Ready Beauty: FRIDAY 5 FINDS

Hey Mamas,

I’m coming at you with Red Carpet ready goodies in this week’s Friday Five Finds including how to get fuller lashes, glowing skin, even a sweat absorbing garment shield.

So, whether you’re going on a date with the hubby, planning a fun dress-up Oscars viewing party at home, or simply thinking ahead to wedding season, you’ll want to check out my Pam-tested picks.

Red Carpet Ready Beauty Finds by Pamela Pekerman

Red Carpet Ready Lashes

Go big or go home with Grande Cosmetics Mascara, formulated to boost lash volume. Plus, it’s waterproof. So, enjoy that Kleenex moment while Emma Stone accepts her win for Best Actress in La La Land.

PS Use this in the morning when you’re running off to daycare and have no time for any other makeup … or even a shower. It’s an instant fake-awake that will certainly distract from the fact that you might be wearing the same shirt you picked the kids up in, the previous night. #ItHasntHappenedYet #ItCouldHappen

Red Carpet Ready Dress No Mess

I’m a sweater. Wearing long sleeve dresses, has always been a problem. When I was little my mom would cut up some special fabric and sow oval shields under my armpit area, which would absorb my sweat.

These days, I use Hollywood Fashion Garment Shields, disposable apparel shields. I have no shame in my sweat-free game. #KeepingItHonest

Red Carpet Ready Skin

I’ve been testing a lot of masks, lately and I love The True Tincture Chamomile Mask from belif. Belif which stands for “believe in truth” is a cleaner-greener brand that’s becoming a staple in my beauty repertoire.
This tincture mask is loaded with real, organic chamomile flowers that will sooth and deeply hydrate your already glorious face. #EcoMama

Red Carpet Ready Glow

Never have I been so in love with a bronzer, as I am with Vita Liberata Trystal Minerals Self-Tanning Bronzing Minerals. I’m not sure about the “self-tanning” part, and the claim to long lasting glow with prolonged use.

But, I can 10000% confirm my skin has never looked better, than when I apply this miraculous bronzing dust of goodness. #GoldenGoddessAlert

Red Carpet Ready Body

I promise to stop selecting finds from This Works, when This Works stops working!

If you’re looking to cover up skin imperfections and walk your Red Carpet with head-to-toe confidence, lather on Perfect Legs Skin Miracle. It helps diminish the appearance of skin discoloration and scars. #SexyLegsContest

DIY Minnie Mouse Manicure + Minnie Mouse x Gray Malin Leady Lady Prints

Hey Mamas,

Before Elsa, Belle, and, even Cinderella, Minnie Mouse was the main gal at Disney.

Today, there’s no question, the old broad is doing a little (maybe a lot) of Botox – hey she’s 89-years-old and spends most of her time in Hollywood. Her good looks and friendly demeanor, recently caught the eye of photographer Gray Malin, who was inspired to create a unique print spotlighting her Red-Carpet-worthy beauty.

Gray Malin Leading Lady Minnie Mouse Prints

Gray Malin “Leading Lady” Prints are inspired by Hollywood’s iconic landscape and with the ultimate leading lady, Minnie Mouse, popping out from behind a white polka dot.

The whole image is an aerial view of a staged red carpet. All faces, save for the lovely Minnie Mouse, are hidden behind white polka dots.

A lover of all things Minnie Mouse, plus I’ll do anything to get a smile out of my kids, Malin’s Minnie Mouse images inspired my current manicure.Minnie Mouse Manicure by Pamela Pekerman

  1. Following all the prepping and drying instructions included with your manicure kit, apply two layers of Red-y to Party Gel.
  2. From your art kit, find and apply a small face of mini mouse to two or four nails, in random spots. Let settle for a minute.
  3. Using the back of a thin wooden or metal brush, dip a little in the white Iconic Beauty shade and make about 3-5 mini polka-dots on each nail.
  4. Take the back of a slightly thicker wooden or metal brush, and dip it in the white Iconic Beauty Share.
  5. Make one big dot on each nail, making sure to place one just under the face of Minnie Mouse. The effect should be that she is popping out from behind the dot.

OR Go to the salon and ask someone to do this for you. That’s what I did, yesterday. #GottaBeHonest
